It's not about your nature; it's about being sensible. It's simple Game Theory.

Having said that, if I stole and the person had chosen to split, then I'd go halfers with them after the show.

I feel gutted for people when they get stiffed by a stealer. I'd always split, unless if I was totally convinced that my opposite was going to steal. I'd cancel it out if I felt I had to.

how is stealing the only way to play..
if everyone went by that gameplan, no one would ever win
if you are happy with half the money, splitting is the only way to play it.. if they steal you get nothing.. if they split you get half

if you both steal you both get nothing

so the only way to sensibly play is to split.. unless your an evil selfish swine(or playing for a jackpot of £50 or something then stealing is fine and laughed at)

Yes Shafted ( I went for an audition but never got on ) was shelved after THREE yes three episodes as it was demmed immoral, this was only about seven yeras ago, times seemed to have changed but it took a hundred episodes of Goldenballs to come to a similar conclusion.

I can't be bothered explaining it, but it's called the Prisoner's Dilemma if you want to look it up.

Banquo is right: stealing is the only way to play because if your opponent does split then you get twice the prize. This does not factor in your opponent being able to read what you aer going to do.
Of course a game theory equilibrium does not necessarily mena that it is the best outcome. In this situation it actually leads to the worst possible outcome.

Shyte programme though because every day someone steals, I've only ever seen one split and I've watched the last 10 minutes of about 30 shows.
Report panglima November 16, 2009 5:18 PM GMT

id rather split but id feel sick if someone stole all that off me, id probably end up throwing one of the balls at them or something.
Report Andy Murray November 16, 2009 5:30 PM GMT
reading only a bit of the prisoners dilemma, its a different situation..

steal steal.. = both go home with nothing(prisoners get 5 years each)
steal split.. = steal gets the jackpot(prisoner stealing gets off free, splitter gets 10 years)
split split.. = both share the prize(prisoners get 6 months each)

so the worst case scenario for the stealer in this situation = 5 years, best case = no punishment
as for the splitter, worst case scenario is 10 years, best scenario is 6 months

in this it adds what would have been the stealers punishment onto the splitters punishment..
in goldenballs this doesn't happen.. the splitter isnt penalised in anyway for splitting
Report dk1986 November 16, 2009 5:31 PM GMT
Going to have to weigh things up. There'll be a security review, and something might happen, if only so the company doesn't make front page news across the county again for the same reason. ;)

I like the job, so it would be a shame to leave it 'unplanned'.
Report Gary Binosh November 16, 2009 5:31 PM GMT
that would be hilarious Tim :^0

the way i see the show

if you steal and they steal - you stop them taking all the money
if you steal and they split - you get double the money they do

there is no reason for splitting other than human decency, but i wouldnt probably dare split incase the other person stole, as it would kill me, but as i wouldnt want to steal off someone either i wont go on the show :D

i would carry a hand grenade in my pocket, as they left the studio, if they stole i would throw it knowing my luck , a couple of window fitters would walk by infront of the one who stole and the grenade would bounce of window glass and take me out instead :^0

Goldenballs is one of those cringe making programes.
You want it to end with a split.
But you know you are watching either one,or two people lying through their teeth to get their grubby hands on the money. :(
I'd like to think I'd split..... But then again I would n't wanna be 'mugged' of my cash. :^0
Report larrence November 16, 2009 6:33 PM GMT
agree with you totally bobby, it does make you cringe at the end of the programme, some real devious types around, would steal the false teeth of there grans. :(
Report Gene Hackman November 16, 2009 6:43 PM GMT
The logical way to play it is to convince the other player that the only way to guarantee that the programme pays out is for you both to split.Think of it this way I would say: If the programme could influence you it would want you to steal. Therefore we split!
That logic is so convincing that the other player would know that you will split - because of your perfectly explained logic - so ironically they could then steal.
So,the way I would play it is to say that I would steal . I would convince the other player that he/she may as well steal because I will and we can both go away with nowt.
Logically, that other player has nothing to gain by stealing (because he/she is convinced that I will). Therefore he/she may as well split with the outside chance that I was bluffing about stealing.
I then have 2 possible results
1. He/she splits and I win the lot having told the truth.
2. He/she steals and we go home with nowt having told the truth.
As you can see I am not prepared to go on National TV and be seen lying for a few thousand quid.

only way 2 play is 2 steal, thats not bein harsh or a moneygrabber, but u must b a staggering moron 2 even consider splitting.
if ur a nice guy play safe n steal, if the other guy steals u were right 2, if they had split u can give them half, 4 me i cannot c the sense in riskin splittin it

If you steal, and tell the other person you're going to steal - the only way they can possibly hope to get any money is by splitting.

If you come across well and a nice enough person then they're unlikely to hate you enough to stop you getting the money. They might as well just split and hope that you're bluffing.
