I'd be looking at something like a flight to Kenya or madagasca, and then overland/coastal ferries. I'd guess you can do it £600 and an adventure for a 5 days each way.
Maybe a Euro rail pass for £200 or so to get you as far as Greece or Spain, and then a ferry to Egypt or Morocco, and overland from there, but that sounds too much opportunity to fail imo.

If you know someone in Forces it is possible to get civilians on military flights. Need to have a fiend in the right place but is possible. I almost flew Germany to UK on such a flight a couple of years ago in an hour of need.
