I have a budget of £15000, but would obviously prefer to spend less.

Want something that doesn't need a lot of manteneance and packs a bit of an unexpected punch. Currently looking at Civic type R or Mazda 6 sport. Looking at 1-2 years old..

What would you buy?

Thanks

A sporty A3, may be a little older to stay within your budget.

Mazda RX8 of course :D

A3 - never going back to Audi after the TT. They are utter utter cowboys in my experience

Mazda RX8 = considered it and tested one, but once again it's a bit too showy.

Considered Alfas - like the look of them, but have heard they're expensive to run and not too reliable.
Report statman99 November 14, 2009 6:07 PM GMT
I think it must be a Japanese car.

I had a 1989 Mazda 3 which I drove all the way to Krakow, Poland and back. It wouldn't die - had to pay someone to cube it in the end.

After the bad experience with the Audi - I miss the faithful old Mazda. I want a current version of that thing.

Which Honda?

Did you ever get the old jalopy started, BC?
Report Big Charlie November 14, 2009 7:22 PM GMT
Got it started with jump leads Egg.

That power booster thing won't charge dead flat batteries, only those with a low charge.

Still not been anywhere in it, appointment got cancelled.
Report everythings gone green November 14, 2009 7:27 PM GMT
Oh, that's good/bad.
Report Big Charlie November 14, 2009 7:43 PM GMT
New jump leads were ordered online and my mrs picked them up from Halfords.

What they didn't say online was that even though they're 'heavy duty' they're for use on engines up to 2,000 c.c.

It states it on the box, but in the online advert you only see the leads.

Just as well it started.
Report everythings gone green November 14, 2009 7:50 PM GMT
As long as they're copper you should be OK.

I've seen cheapo ones made of aluminium!

A bloke went into a pub with a set of jump leads round his neck.

Landlord says, "I hope you're not gonna start anything".

I'll get me sheepskin coat.

Big Charlie - sorry, didn't mean to belittle anyone. Just impossible to have this conversation without talking budget that's all.

GASHWAN - the guys at Audi never wanted to charge me les than £1500 for a service. Absolute shysters. I ended up buying the parts and getting them fitted by the local garage = it would cost me about 15% of what they quoted.

Here's a joke for you:

What did the cowboy say when he walking into the car showroom?
Report JOCI Club November 14, 2009 7:58 PM GMT
Wouldn't put you off the Honda. We've had an Accord Type-R and now an Accord Type-S, and have been very happy with them both.
Report Big Charlie November 14, 2009 8:03 PM GMT
My mrs got a set of aluminium ones from Poundland (ffs) about 4 years ago.
She's only got a small car, Nissan Micra.
The first time she used them was on her sisters car.
The handles snapped off both leads. :^0

i learnt the hard way mate. £1.1k for a **ing service. I'd just had new tyres fitted the week before as well. this coming at a time when i'd been losing money hand over fist gambling.

i was worried about the resale value plumetting by using independants but i'll know better next time.

which service centre out of interest?

VAG & SAAB are the worst service and rip off merchants going. I have had more grief from those too than soft mick. Which is a shame cos the new shape TT looks a treat. Porsche not much better.

Honda, and Mercedes the other end of the spectrum.

Carwise, I would never buy an alfa, my mates have owned them and deeply regretted it. You know it is bad when the dealership starts giving you apologies and reducing the bill for fixing it it was that often.
Never owned a BMW, though I do like the new hardtop cabrio so that might be an option next time. Lexus, I like but lack of auto boxes on decent models, and said to be good on reliability.

If you go on the warrantydirect website they have a link to the reliability stats for all cars, (this is as good a data as you will get imo.). you will be very surprised at how ordinary some of the so called "solid motors" are. ford is much better than VW for example. Porsche is a disgcrace for the money. Mercedes are not as good as you'd think they should be but not too bad.

As long as it is covered by a warranty that does not cost a fortune to renew then I am happy to share the maintenance between the dealer and the indie places, does not work out so bad.

I only paid £2K for it!

Jim, you obviously don't have a Merc. Biggest rip off merchants around.

GASHWAN - I just use a guy round the corner - small sole trader. I used to worry about the price impact of the official service history, but the size of the bills made my mind up for me.

To give you an idea of the absurdity that was going on - Audi wanted to charge me over £100 to replace a couple of bulbs = when I asked how much they were they admitted they were £2 each. The rest? "Labour".

I also had a service where the guy presented me with a £1700 bill and when I questioned what a £70 ish item on it was he said: "dunno".

What did the cowboy say when he walked into a car showroom?

"Audi"
Report RLKingPunter November 14, 2009 10:09 PM GMT
i love that Alfa Brera and am considering one but reading some of this is worrying.Lets get this right - a service on an Audi TT is as much as 1,700 ???
Report statman99 November 14, 2009 10:34 PM GMT
Was on mine yes.

The five years I had it, the average bill they wanted to throw at me was around £2k
Report d13phe November 14, 2009 10:37 PM GMT
wouldnt spend more than £5k on a car max

they just get you from A to B

i would spend the other 10K on something for the house like home cinema

:)
Report statman99 November 14, 2009 10:42 PM GMT
Sounds sensible - so what car would you buy for £5k?
Report d13phe November 14, 2009 10:44 PM GMT
me personally

an old VW golf or something like that (3/4 yrs old

cars just become a burden and you want something that doesn't let you down
Report d13phe November 14, 2009 10:45 PM GMT
you could also consider leasing

you pay about £250 a month, get a brand new car

hand it back in 3 years and get the keys to another new one

no real point in owning your car imo
Report Max and Paddy November 14, 2009 10:57 PM GMT
My mate knows his cars and he strongly recommended I should get a Golf. In the end, they were a little expensive, so I got a 2006 reg Seat for £4,100 (I need a hatchback to transport M&P, my springer spaniels, around).

I picked up the Seat this lunchtime and after 35 miles it's still going strong.
Report Big Charlie November 14, 2009 11:04 PM GMT
You want 3 more seats and a steering wheel :)
