I have a budget of £15000, but would obviously prefer to spend less.
Want something that doesn't need a lot of manteneance and packs a bit of an unexpected punch. Currently looking at Civic type R or Mazda 6 sport. Looking at 1-2 years old..
What would you buy?

I think it must be a Japanese car.
I had a 1989 Mazda 3 which I drove all the way to Krakow, Poland and back. It wouldn't die - had to pay someone to cube it in the end. After the bad experience with the Audi - I miss the faithful old Mazda. I want a current version of that thing. Which Honda? |

A3 - never going back to Audi after the TT. They are utter utter cowboys in my experience i've got an A3. what makes you think they are cowboys?? they took me to the cleaners when i got it serviced so wont be using them again. fantastic car thouigh |

Got it started with jump leads Egg.
That power booster thing won't charge dead flat batteries, only those with a low charge. Still not been anywhere in it, appointment got cancelled. |

New jump leads were ordered online and my mrs picked them up from Halfords.
What they didn't say online was that even though they're 'heavy duty' they're for use on engines up to 2,000 c.c. It states it on the box, but in the online advert you only see the leads. Just as well it started. |

As long as they're copper you should be OK.
I've seen cheapo ones made of aluminium! A bloke went into a pub with a set of jump leads round his neck. Landlord says, "I hope you're not gonna start anything". I'll get me sheepskin coat. |

GASHWAN - the guys at Audi never wanted to charge me les than £1500 for a service. Absolute shysters. I ended up buying the parts and getting them fitted by the local garage = it would cost me about 15% of what they quoted. Wouldn't put you off the Honda. We've had an Accord Type-R and now an Accord Type-S, and have been very happy with them both.

My mrs got a set of aluminium ones from Poundland (ffs) about 4 years ago.
She's only got a small car, Nissan Micra. The first time she used them was on her sisters car. The handles snapped off both leads. :^0 |

I'd just had new tyres fitted the week before as well. this coming at a time when i'd been losing money hand over fist gambling. i was worried about the resale value plumetting by using independants but i'll know better next time. which service centre out of interest? |

VAG & SAAB are the worst service and rip off merchants going. I have had more grief from those too than soft mick. Which is a shame cos the new shape TT looks a treat. Porsche not much better.
Honda, and Mercedes the other end of the spectrum. Carwise, I would never buy an alfa, my mates have owned them and deeply regretted it. You know it is bad when the dealership starts giving you apologies and reducing the bill for fixing it it was that often. Never owned a BMW, though I do like the new hardtop cabrio so that might be an option next time. Lexus, I like but lack of auto boxes on decent models, and said to be good on reliability. If you go on the warrantydirect website they have a link to the reliability stats for all cars, (this is as good a data as you will get imo.). you will be very surprised at how ordinary some of the so called "solid motors" are. ford is much better than VW for example. Porsche is a disgcrace for the money. Mercedes are not as good as you'd think they should be but not too bad. As long as it is covered by a warranty that does not cost a fortune to renew then I am happy to share the maintenance between the dealer and the indie places, does not work out so bad. |
