The number behind Bars has more than doubled - because of a failure to kick out convicted overseas gangsters, drug dealers and fraudsters. There are now 11,350 foreign lags in Uk jails compared with 5,388 when Labour came to power. Last year just 68 foreign prisoners were transfered to a home country to serve their sentance.

WHY ?

I think the costs will to soar further when one considers that these prisoners are likely to be issued with television sets broadcasting such material as 'Hole In The Wall', 'Newsnight Review' and 'This Afternoon with Kay Burley'.

No doubt even as I type this, there is a chancer lawyer somewhere looking to bring a case of 'torture' against Britain for inflicting such programmes against vulnerable prisoners. (Admittedly they may have a decent case with 'Newsnight Review').

Even more likely, there is a court somewhere in Soft Britain or Europe that will oblige them with vast compo.

Canaryboy wouldn't like prison.

In high security prison Whitemoor (Cambridgeshire) prisoners can smoke in their cells.

Wardens have to walk to the perimeter fence.

It is now costing taxpayers £431 million a Year to keep the Criminals under lock and key, analysis by the Conservatives reveals.
The total £3.4 billion bill would pay for nearly 13,000 extra troops or more than 550,000 hip replacements.

re:Last year just 68 foreign prisoners were transfered to a home country to serve their sentance.

because their home country has to agree to take them back... and many use all the delaying/ignoring tactics they can. The "smart" prisoners just refuse to admit where they come from (if here illegally).

Check Italy's solution (not final though...) of renaming their detention centres to identification and repatriation centres... If you're caught without any papers - that's where you go
Report positively4thsteet November 14, 2009 5:13 AM GMT
how do you prove someone is not brititsh - just lack of papers. and then how do you prove where they come from. if someone does a crime and then says he is french you can't just chuck him off the ferry at calais or the french would go nuts (imagine if the boot was on the other foot) must be quite tricky imo.

If someone gets deported, with say 5 years prison remaining is there any guarantee they will do those 5 years abroad? they could just let him out straight away
