That's what I thought. I used the black pump and it gave me unleaded. Want to know where I stand with the garage.

Q. I accidentally put diesel in my vehicle instead of petrol because the pumps werent colour coded?
A. There is no legal requirement for petrol pumps to be colour coded, this is just industry practice. There is however a legal requirement for pumps to be labelled with the type of fuel they are dispensing. As an extra check, before commencing delivery make sure that the price displayed corresponds to the fuel you want to purchase. If you know of a petrol station which does not have the fuel type labelled on the pumps, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Did you realise before you started the engine?
Report Joe Jordan • November 13, 2009 12:27 PM GMT
they are different sized nozzles , a diesel will not fit in a petrol tank opening ...
Report Joe Jordan • November 13, 2009 12:28 PM GMT
a good hook though , just using the wrong line :D
Report Huckerson • November 13, 2009 12:38 PM GMT
Genuine** up, but I'm going back to check the pump later. No harm done, just £300 down the drain...

Joe, they do fit, I used to work on ambulances and with some diesel and some petrol it was surprising how often it would happen.

The trick is if you find out you've made the error, just don't start the engine..

If you have an older diesel car, and assuming you didn't fill your tank, just top it up with more diesel (or syphon some petrol out if you can do it).

The car will run ok, if a bit rough. I wouldn't do it on a newer car, because you can do some damage to it, but you wouldn't notice on an older car.

and (according to Wiki answers) change your fuel filter after the petrol has all gone through.

I left the forecourt and got about 500 yards down the road before it gave up. The repair boys were good, said it was surprising how often it happened. One bloke did it twice in one day, apparently.
