WIMPY BARS

went 20 years ago tops , before Mc ,burger king

prefer Milky bars

prefer wham bars

Do they still serve benders?

you pay an extra £2 to not eat in the company of your typical Mcdonalds lunchtime chav imo. Well worth it

Jointly owned by Macdonalds and Burger King and kept going to remind UK punters how bad it was in the good old days.

disagree Wimpy from years ago far better than Macdonalds has ever been

Wimpy's were superb, going back at least 20 years. Didn't know they were still around.

Bender in a bun

Shanty - the Tasty Fish Fillet.

The wimpey in Mansfield is an oasis from the chavland that abounds outside and you still get to eat with cutlery and a menu is brought to your table as well -as i said well worth a couple more quid

the wimpy in mansfield is the best thing in mansfield.

yes it is apart from Rebecca Adlington that is

20 + years back were the bizz and a choice of French or English A nice cup of tea not the piss they sell in paper cups these days ..

French or English mustard

The one in Morden in surrey is not bad ,but Pricey ..

do they still toast the buns,

I took my first proper girlfriend to the Wimpy in Streatham High Road in 1980. She must have been very impressed that I treated her to a cola float and a Brown Derby as she let me get to second base in the Odeon cinema afterwards whilst watching Private Benjamin.

There's still a Wimpy a couple of towns from where I live. It's like being in a time warp, but the food's actually half decent. Real cutlery, proper puds with custard and decent sized portions - you can't go wrong

I had one in Long Eaton about two years ago, it's the only Wimpey's that I know of in my area.

used to be one in Burton about 40 years ago never seen one since, thought they finished years ago

No a single one in Wales.

The special grill still going Be in Morden over the next week have to go in

Blimey, madsimon's back. Good to see after all these years.

There is still a Wimpy not far from me on Sydenham High Street, a few doors down from Ladbrokes.

Was last in one just over 30 years ago in Glasgow. Checked and it's no longer there.
Far better than either McDonalds or Burger King.

the special grill

Takes me back 30 odd years ..love d a wimpey :(

nearest one to to me is milford near stafford.

Never been but got rave reviews on tripadvisor, so might try it next time I'm over that way

Use to eat at the one in Thornton Heath High Street before Palace games 40 years ago, one opened in Norbury in the 80's but the food was never as good as the one in THHS, no doubt they have both long since closed.

if you said to someone that you'd had a great idea for a restaurant where people would queue at the counter for their food, have it served in cardboard boxes and cups and where they were encouraged to clear their mess afterwards they would say you were being ridiculous and no-one would stand for that.
Such is the power of advertising however.

1st time poster --
I can see the attraction --
If they "toast their buns" in front of you

Bix -- for over a hundred years before the boxes came along
they served you your meal in old newspapers !!
It was called the chippy !!

It was fine back in the day (when I was 10 years young) but burger King and McD's much better if you are looking for a quick burger, IMO. And why would you want plates and napkinks and cutlery if you are grabbing a burger? A napkin or a plastic fork at a push should suffice in such circumstances of partaking in fast food.

Been years since I had a wimpy, always remember saying they had by far the best fries & at least the burger never looked like it had been run over by a dump truck when you went to pick it up to eat

It was a sad loss when our Wimpy closed down, like a few have said already they were better than Mcdingles and burger king.

Not sure if it's still there now, but there was a Wimpy in Newmarket High St.

I didn't know there were any left.

Used to go to one in Leeds and it was a simple concept.

Excellent burgers in toasted buns (that is a must for me) sitting on a stool at the bar, and with ice cold "proper Coke" in glass bottles.

None of the poncey burger names and hideous slurry poured on as is today.

Think they may have had cheese, and ketchup for those who want to ruin a good burger!

Can't have been expensive, as would usually ask for another one whilst eating the first.

I'm guessing that kenny will fill in some details.....

I half knew one of the last people to own the one in Carlisle; he also owned the takeaway next door to the Wimpy.
I think the problem was not the competition from McDonalds and BK because the Wimpy was far better than them, the problem was the management. Like the other two the Wimpy is a franchise.
He said it was almost impossible to make any real money from running a Wimpy, by the time they overcharged you for the supplies and other charges. They also had a very strict management style that made life difficult, so in the end he gave it up and concentrated on his own business next door.

It was the only place to go if you fancied a bender.

Hound-Dog-2

no, its now a Street Cafe

I always thought that Wimpy bars were for people who were wimps,

like gay bars are for gays.

Maybe I should give 'em a go now I know that Betfair forumites use them ... or perhaps not on second thoughts.

^ Thanks for that Delta, interesting.

Remember the Wimpy bars very well and their Milkshakes and the Banana Longboats.   And the lukewarm cups of tea !

Still got one in my high street, Beckenham Kent.

It's advertising that Lime Milkshake is back on the menu.

I stand corrected, Wimpy were the place to go for milkshakes, before we got health conscious. Burgers...still McDs for me.

still one on Streatham High Road. Also passed one in Worthing a few months ago, had been voted Wimpy of the year the previous year!

I was in there a couple of weeks ago lovegod, met up with some mates in The George opposite Corals for a few beers and popped into the Wimpy on the way home.
I've always liked Beckenham.

I went off Wimpy when they switched to brown baps instead of white...for a burger it's all wrong IMO.

I remember having a wimpey birthday party as a kid and getting to stamp on the feet of Mr wimpey. I still feel guilty about it now.

think they went out of buisness as "benders" were no longer politically correct

Slippy, me you and lovegod could all meet up at the Beckenham Wimpy (as its our local) and talk about old times.

Quite

I think I know who you are lumponlarge but I'm not 100% certain. I'll be in Beckenham later this week.

and they,re were none of them god awful gherkins on a wimpy, these days 5 Guys are the best burgers by a country mile.

If my parents were flush back in the 1970s, Saturday lunchtime treat was being sent out to the Wimpy Bar in Farnham Rd, Slough, for three burgers. Used to seem interminable watching them being cooked, followed by the sprint back home so we could scoff them while watching the first race on Grandstand.

It was never fast food as we know it ... You watched the meat and onions frying on the grill, the buns being toasted. Junk food only arrived when McDonald's opened in Slough High St. I remember queuing there for the first time behind a pair of Yanks, and ordering whatever it was they had, on the basis they must know what they're doing. I'll never forget being instantaneously offered a soggy bun filled with turd and diarrhoea. It turned out that McDonald's were deliberately trying to confuse customers by using the word "relish", which is the US English word for diarrhoea.

Morden is never in Surrey, it's in the London Borough of Merton.

I've only ever seen and been into two Wimpey's, I assumed they either had a cull or had shut down, one being in Wood Green and the other opposite Southgate tube station - which is now a P@ddyPower's. Like most chains of a similar nature, they are only good for one thing - the toilet when you need it, I wouldn't put that filth they serve up into my system if I was sponsored to, my body is a temple.
