Report sj November 10, 2009 5:36 PM GMT

Report sj November 10, 2009 5:37 PM GMT
Mr E is minted would only use the finest imported logs
Report TRIEDTOMAKEALL November 10, 2009 5:38 PM GMT
Logs.
Report Mr Eboue November 10, 2009 5:39 PM GMT
lol sj.

Not my fire unfortunately - I'm visiting the family.

Mixture of woods - Oak and pine mostly I think with plenty of coal to provide the heat.

I love going to old pubs in the sticks sometimes and have a nice beer, sitting at the log fire :)
Report Mr Eboue November 10, 2009 5:42 PM GMT
sadly most pubs dont have logfires nowadays :(
Report canaryboy November 10, 2009 5:43 PM GMT

Report rustyboy November 10, 2009 5:44 PM GMT
we're using sweet chestnut at the moment and it's not a great fuel. Trying to get hold of some Ash. Thats the best wood to burn.
Report positively4thsteet November 10, 2009 5:44 PM GMT

Report aceofspades November 10, 2009 5:47 PM GMT

The last time i was home - April this year - My parents house came close to burning down cause of the logfire...... Some embers got caught between the walls.

I was in the kitchen and next thing I know I smelled a weird plasticy smell. Looked over my shoulder and the airing cupboard was up in flames.

I threw as much water as I could over the fire ( which wasnt wise cause of all the electics in there )....

Called the fire engines and thankfully they sorted it out. They had to completely smash the kitchen wall out and fish out all the burning embers.

God knows what would have happened if I didnt find the fire so soon. Parents were both in bed.

It could have been carnage.

:( jesus eboue, thankgod you did m8.

Waiting on a delivery of free ash now.

Got no coal or peat in yet so the central heating is on for the time being.

Different sort of heat though, stuffy, oppressive as opposed to a fire which changes the air in room constantly so feels fresher though still cosy.
Report wallboy November 10, 2009 6:45 PM GMT
do you make your own logs
Report Benny brown trousers November 10, 2009 6:47 PM GMT
Woodburning stoves are much better as 80% of the heat goes in the room wheras an open fire it mostly goes up the chimney.
Report macarony November 10, 2009 7:00 PM GMT
Don't buy a dovre poor performance and expensive
Report Benny brown trousers November 10, 2009 7:08 PM GMT
ive got a villager.Great value.very pleased with it.
My racing post gives it a good start in the evenings.
Report sibaroni November 10, 2009 7:11 PM GMT
Having been a fireplace man as a child, Iif that makes sense) I am now a complete a complete convert to log burners. We have a Villager - the dog's b*llocks.
Report The punter formerly known as h November 10, 2009 7:15 PM GMT
I've got Herald Hunter, but am currently having central heating installed.

Have any of you seen those fans that sit on top of the woodburner and the hotter it gets, the faster it goes, firng the heat out into the room.

My mate has just got one and reckons it's great although they're about £100
Report everythings gone green November 10, 2009 7:18 PM GMT
How much does a villager cost?
Report ROCKIN HORSE November 10, 2009 7:20 PM GMT
£600-£700
Report everythings gone green November 10, 2009 7:21 PM GMT
Grate, cheers.
Report sibaroni November 10, 2009 7:21 PM GMT
Starting from £500. What really costs is if you haven't got a chimney, the piping going up outside the house gets a bit heavy.

I reckon we saved £300 on heating bills in the first year we had it.
Report everythings gone green November 10, 2009 7:22 PM GMT

re villager.depends on the size.Mines the flatmate B.medium range size.7/8 kw.cost £467 with some freebies on the net.
Report ROCKIN HORSE November 10, 2009 7:24 PM GMT
I think the Yeoman's with tudor rose iron work on the glass doors are the most aesthetically pleasing cast iron fires on the market
Report Benny brown trousers November 10, 2009 7:25 PM GMT
btw the same burner in a local shop was £200 more. You`ll save **eloads on the net.
Report sibaroni November 10, 2009 7:25 PM GMT
Ah, but a are they British, Horse?
Report everythings gone green November 10, 2009 7:26 PM GMT
I have a tiled fireplace which sticks out 19 inches from the wall.

With a woodburner would this stay in place or be ripped out?
Report sibaroni November 10, 2009 7:28 PM GMT
It would stay in place. You just put a flue up into the chimney opening, with a fire resistant plaster board underneath the fireplace above the burner.
Report The punter formerly known as h November 10, 2009 7:28 PM GMT
It has to be 600mm around it I think EGG
Report everythings gone green November 10, 2009 7:29 PM GMT

Quaint things to roast over the fire.
Report Benny brown trousers November 10, 2009 7:31 PM GMT
you can keep the tiles,There are rules re woodburning stoves.E.g you need an air vent if its more than 5kw.Also a certain distance from anything combustible.
Report sibaroni November 10, 2009 7:31 PM GMT
I don't like too much decoration any way. Biggest window, no decoration, so I can see the flames. Each to their own, of course.
Report Benny brown trousers November 10, 2009 7:32 PM GMT
Google document j.Its the hetas rules re solid fuel.
