lol sj.

Not my fire unfortunately - I'm visiting the family.

Mixture of woods - Oak and pine mostly I think with plenty of coal to provide the heat.

we're using sweet chestnut at the moment and it's not a great fuel. Trying to get hold of some Ash. Thats the best wood to burn.

The last time i was home - April this year - My parents house came close to burning down cause of the logfire...... Some embers got caught between the walls.

I was in the kitchen and next thing I know I smelled a weird plasticy smell. Looked over my shoulder and the airing cupboard was up in flames.

I threw as much water as I could over the fire ( which wasnt wise cause of all the electics in there )....

Called the fire engines and thankfully they sorted it out. They had to completely smash the kitchen wall out and fish out all the burning embers.

God knows what would have happened if I didnt find the fire so soon. Parents were both in bed.

It could have been carnage.

Waiting on a delivery of free ash now.

Got no coal or peat in yet so the central heating is on for the time being.

Different sort of heat though, stuffy, oppressive as opposed to a fire which changes the air in room constantly so feels fresher though still cosy.

do you make your own logs

Woodburning stoves are much better as 80% of the heat goes in the room wheras an open fire it mostly goes up the chimney.

I've got Herald Hunter, but am currently having central heating installed.

Have any of you seen those fans that sit on top of the woodburner and the hotter it gets, the faster it goes, firng the heat out into the room.

My mate has just got one and reckons it's great although they're about £100

By:

When: 10 Nov 09 19:21
Starting from £500. What really costs is if you haven't got a chimney, the piping going up outside the house gets a bit heavy.

I reckon we saved £300 on heating bills in the first year we had it.

I think the Yeoman's with tudor rose iron work on the glass doors are the most aesthetically pleasing cast iron fires on the market

I have a tiled fireplace which sticks out 19 inches from the wall.

With a woodburner would this stay in place or be ripped out?
By:
sibaroni
When: 10 Nov 09 19:28
It would stay in place. You just put a flue up into the chimney opening, with a fire resistant plaster board underneath the fireplace above the burner.
