V risky in current economic climate, with people staying in.
Even with signs of an upturn, will customers be willing to REGULARLY eat out in your hostelry.
Good luck but wouldn't be for me :)

What amazes me in so many pubs is how many staff they have, and the landlord and landlady often don't do much. I think for most pubs you need to put loads of hours in and do as much of the work as possible yourself.
Massive profit margin on food I think, would love to run a restaurant myself.

You have been told by someone who is knowledgeable. The rich are not spending money now- they are trying to hold on to it. Take it from someone who is rich.
I do not jest about matters of this nature. The UK is bankrupt. More money is being paid out to spongers and foreigners in benefits than is being received in taxes. The crepe will hit the fan soonere or later. Do not go down with the sinking ship that is Britain! Do not be mislead by the stock market. An incredibly wealthy financial commentator once told me not to mistake the FTSE index with the economy.

The professions are being badly hit. I know of chartered accountants who cannot get jobs and 2 solicitor aquaintances of mine have closed their practices this month and one of them is on the night shift in Morrisons- he beat 50 other white collar workers and others to this job.
The basic principles of business are maximum return from a minimum outlay with minimum risk. The mark up in a restaurant on alcohol is where the profits used to be, with little or nothing on the food. SO- look at the pubs- many closing down every day.
What return will you get for the aggravation of employing staff- "sorry boss, I cant work tonight, my in growing toenail is playing up!" Rent, rates etc will be a burden. Is it worth it taking the risk? Why will you succeed where the previous owner failed. Are you so much better than him?
Anyway, good luck with what you decide.

Very, very risky, try not to let your enthusiasm cloud you into believing it will be a worker. Seen this here in Tenerife, bars closing left right and center but there,s always some mug from the UK that will buy them cos It,ll be different for them......

Only cos I KNOW!!! I use my eyes to see what's going on- I don't believe politicians, newspapers or people with lesser intelligence and knowldge than me who think they know more than me. Remember, I am highly edumacated and of advanced years. I have seen it all before. But MPS with snouts in the trough and the greediest bankers ever known to man are some rather new, at least in the public domain. So- it's up to you what you believe!
5000 jobs to be cut at Lloyds bank. Those affected wont be spending too much money!

I think a lot of reason that pubs/restaurants/cafes etc go under is because they are run by mugs. It is not an exagerration to say that some of these people don't realise that if you spend a grand ten times it equals ten grand. Or that you only make a profit if you spend less than you earn.
If you do your sums and are willing to work hard then I reckon pubs etc are a reasonable option - you get to live in the pub as well remember. Might not make a mint at first, but should be able to make a small profit if you're thrifty

not pretending to be an expert or anything snooze, and admittedly now isn't the best time. but if you're selling good stuff reasonably priced and keep staff down and other costs you must have a chance. 1250/week seems a bit steep to me though -

Reckon anyone who works hard and has a bit of common could run a restaurant. I know people who run pubs selling food and do all the cooking themselves with no experience and they do alright.
All you need is a bit of common.

if it was busy before then it can be busy again i suppose.
So long as you don't waste food and shop around, you'll be amazed at what the mark up is on a main meal that might go out for 9.95.

Looking into the costings of a carvery they reckon 60% £5 a head Mon-Fri but £8 a head on weekends could do the trick.Plus drinks plus a decent sized kids area it may be a goer

Pub up the road used to do massive plates of roast beef/pork with all the trimmings ona sunday. lovely they are too. ten quid a pop, not a massive pub but they got forty people in there - £400 plus puddings and bottles of wine and other drinks and that. I bet the ingredients only cost less than sixty quid. And not even that much work to do a massive roast so long as you can use a potato peeler.
