Birkenhead Park is a public park in the centre of Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. It was designed by Joseph Paxton and opened on 5 April 1847. It is generally acknowledged as the first publicly-funded civic park in Britain.

Lots of snobbery and assumptions on this thread. Some people seem to be making massive assumptions about people, based on something they dont understand. I for one am 27 and yes I used to like going out and getting drunk a lot, often for no reason other than 'because I can' this was mainly at uni and for the first year I moved away from the UK when i was 23/24. I dont drink that often these days, but that isnt to say that I dont like a drinka nd getting drunk now and then. For example I spent the last few weeks looking forward to this saturday just passed. I knew I'd be spending the day with good friends, watching top class sport (apart from Eng!) all day and getting drunk. Thats exactly what happened, and we had a great laugh. Alcohol releases inhibitions so its natural we 'use' it. Nothing wrong with wanting to be more social. Unfortunately there is a small % of yobs and morons who cant handle their alcohol and end up causing civil unrest and what not that blights the image of all weekend drinkers.
As to the comment about habitual canabis smokers being a bore, I suspect that whomever said that had a very small sample on which to base that opinion. Now I am not advocating it as cool or the thing to do or anything. But I happen to know many many people who smoke regularly and whilst some may be boring others lead perfectly normal lives with hobbies, interests jobs etc. It would appear that these conversations can never be had with out wild sterotyping and what not. Never trust a man who doesnt drink ;-) |

so how do you know what you did bybeing drunk...as you say....why drink so much....if it makes you act like a moron.
|

you see thats the thing, it doesn't always make you act like a moron, in most cases you're just louder and more social. As long as you dont go vomiting on the streets and starting fights then its all gravy imo.

louder and more social...i would associate with being merry........thats ok....drunks walking in the road thinking they are immune to injury;and making people step aside when they are paralectic drunk ...i find irritating.

I shared a flat with two friends in the early 80s and considered it one of the best times, we were all racing mad, liked to go out around 4 nights a week and probably only got really ratarsed really every other weekend, we would have endless fun discussing Horses. girls, football and all kinds of banal things.
There is plenty of time in life to be really deep, and imo when you are 20 odd you aint, you're pretentious, have very little experience of life and most of the time you are trying to get in some girls knickers when you put it on. Enjoy life as you are going to be old for a lot longer than you are young. |

In 1750 William Hogarth depicted the evils on drinking in his works Beer Street and Gin Lane. Would make a cracking film.
Our love of booze is the one thing which prevented revolution in this country imo. |

Now I am not advocating it as cool or the thing to do or anything. But I happen to know many many people who smoke regularly and whilst some may be boring others lead perfectly normal lives with hobbies, interests jobs etc. It was me who said it, and trust me, my opinion wasn't based on 'a very small sample'. I hung around with a lot of stoners for years. Obviously, you'll have some who have hobbies and interesting jobs, but for the most part (in my experience based on the people I've have known) the majority of their activities are based around getting stoned and sleeping. The people I've known, everything they did was in relation to getting high. They wouldn't go out unless they could stand outside the pub and get high; they wouldn't go to parties unless they knew they could get a smoke at it. It was the nucleus of their social life. If you ever did get a conversation out of them, it would normally find a way of entering into a discussion on the legality of marijuana; these wee hard done by souls fighting their petty rebellion, trotting out tired and trite arguments for it, complaining about it not being legal and their human rights being impinged on while...while they stood and smoked a joint. As I said: boring. . |

Hey Banquo, Thanks for the reply. However you do need to find some more interesting friends or stop hanging with Rastas ;)
btw the legalize weed debate IS interesting ;) |

I do have more interesting friends, it was just a case of seperating the wheat from the chaff.
It is an interesting debate to an extent. Where it kinda falls down though, is when you have stoners surreptitiously comparing it to some of the great human rights atrocities of the world, or talking about things which they have a limited knowledge of and passing it off as if they've thoroughly researched it. Additionally, it's hardly as if it being illegal has any bearing on the people who smoke it anyway; it's legality has never stopped a stoner from smoking. For what it's worth, I would like it to be legalised but for very different reasons than the ridiculous standpoint of a stoner complaining about not being able to smoke marijuana whilst smoking mariuana. |

Yes absolutely, I agree whole heartedly. Somewhat like illegal downloads and stuff. I have over 700 Gigs of films tv series' etc on my hard drive and the fact its illegal is neither here nor there. Perhaps a slightly dubious comparison. For the record I would legalize it also. |

A sobering thread for some it seems. I don't have a drink problem...I like it!
Must admit though, as I have got older, I much prefer a day time drink to evening. Sometimes, not often, it rollsover into an all dayer but they are still good. Comment earlier in the thread that booze has never been so cheap. Obviously just for drinking at home. |

What a miserable bunch of bsrards some of you are
![]() I have a mind to open a bottle of Taylors while watching th3 cricket at 11.30 now! Drinking is Ashley a big problem not for the young but people of my age with the money, time and inclination. I try not to drink Monday to Thursday but at times drink everyday of the week, not much but it is easy to see how people become dependent. |
