Adults still smoking in front of children
Posted Tue Oct 27, 2009 12:44pm AEDT

The anti-smoking lobby group QUIT is launching a new campaign targeting smoking around children.

The executive director of QUIT, Fiona Sharkey says new research by the Cancer Council of Victoria shows that more than four in ten adult smokers are still smoking in front children.

Ms Sharkey says passive smoke is harmful to children's health and also affects their attitudes towards smoking.

"We also know that smoking around children serves to normalise smoking and kids look to their parents and say, well that must be pretty normal to smoke," she said.

"We know the biggest predictor of whether a child takes up smoking is whether its parent does."

Does anyone here want to admit to smoking in front of a child????

A unforeseen consequence of the smoking ban in pubs perchance???
Report lmfao November 9, 2009 5:11 PM GMT
AND IT GETS WORSE THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT

DO YOU SMOKERS ACTUALY SMOKE IN FRONT OF PETS???????

Now that it's impossible to smoke anywhere in public, at work, on public transport, in bars and clubs or even soon on the street.

That means that a lot of babies, children and household pets are probably going to be subjected to a hell of a lot more of fag smoking and lung destroying and illness provoking smoke.

None of these kids, babies and fluffy animals asked to be brought into these houses of torture and injury and cancer and disease against healthy living.

Children and animals will need to be monitored more closely to see if this form of child abuse of inflicting damage to health is becoming worrying or serious enough that the kids and the animals need to be removed to smoke-free safe houses.

Surely all-parents that smoke at home in front of their kids knowing the risks are evil, lazy, weak, selfish uncaring child abusers who couldn't give a s hit that maybe they are setting a bad example and leading their kids to death in showing them smoking is good, mummy and daddy are doing it?

Should all babies be adopted at birth from smokers?

Should the RSPCA protect pussy cats and doggies lungs too?

I THINK WE NEED TO BAN SMOKING - PERIOD.

Yeah, those ba$tards forcing you to breath toxic smoke into the lungs of your child. If only they had thought of this consequence.

Report Early Morning Riser November 9, 2009 5:19 PM GMT
more smokers are staying in now with a few cans rather than going to the pub, so it's obvious that more smoking is going on in the home. i think the smoking ban has backfired
Report madsimon November 9, 2009 5:20 PM GMT
yes imagine smokers having to stay in with their kids instead of getting legless in the pub!!

Obese kids who are fed high sugar diets by their parents are at far greater risk of health problems than they would be by passive smoking.

EMR -I suppose if you start of with the presumption that smokers are selfish its a hard question as to who they shoudl infect with smoke ,strangers in a pub or their own kids at home. I suppose some are selfish enough to not step into the garden or yard when at home and in the company of theri own kids but tbh if that is the case the kids have more to worry about than a bit of smoke

I don't have kids but i have smoked in front of children. these fecking nazi's want the government to regulate every aspect of our lives for our own benefit. Feck 'em. the government should be encouraging smoking as a way of reducing pension payouts and increasing tax take.
Report Early Morning Riser November 9, 2009 5:26 PM GMT
should have been left to the pubs to decide if they wanted a smoking ban in their pubs

I'm asking it now:

Do YOU smoke in doors in front of children
Report madsimon November 9, 2009 5:47 PM GMT
fouraces--i dont expect smokers to not smoke in outside areas even if my kids are there. ITs enclosed spaces where smokers ought to look at themselves if they smoke and others are present especialy kids
Report fouraces November 9, 2009 5:49 PM GMT
Yes I will smoke indoors in front of kids.

Me and my wife both smoke and have no desire to have kids- if you visit and bring your kids you will know I smoke-if you choose to stay or leave that is your perogative.

iTS NOT A 'TRADE OFF'

If you believe car fumes kill or at harmful levels - find some research - make some research!!!- mobilise people and get something done about it. Thats what I and others did in the early 70's re smoking and at last - we're here. :) We did it without the power of the internet.

Car fumes have nothing to do with smoking in pubs. If you believe car fumes to be dangerous - do something about it.
Report madsimon November 9, 2009 6:05 PM GMT
i don't knwo for sure fouraces but i guess that smnoking casues more premature deaths.

However that is not the point because smoking not only kills it is unpleasant for others to be around a smoker , your clothes stink and also cars are necessary for any kind of civilised existence wheras smoking is not.

I do not wish to ban smoking or even people smoking with kids watching (if outside) but the pub smoking ban is entiely fair and sensible

Surgeon General: No Safe Level for Secondhand Smoke
Report Bolsters Clean Indoor Air Efforts

Secondhand smoke is dangerous in any amount, and the only way to protect people from that danger is to eliminate indoor smoking. SOURCE: US Surgeon General Richard Carmona. The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke.

"The health effects of secondhand smoke exposure are more pervasive than we previously thought," said Carmona, vice admiral of the US Public Health Service. "The scientific evidence is now indisputable: Secondhand smoke is not a mere annoyance. It is a serious health hazard that can lead to disease and premature death in children and nonsmoking adults."

Cancer experts praised Carmona's report, which adds weight to efforts to get clean indoor air laws passed throughout the country.

"Today's report should end any lingering debate over the importance of enacting comprehensive smoke-free laws," said John Seffrin PhD, chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society. "The report confirms that the only way to protect people from secondhand smoke is to eliminate their exposure."

Secondhand Smoke Causes Lung Cancer, Other Diseases
Medical experts and public health officials have long known that secondhand smoke poses a danger to non-smokers. A Surgeon General's report in 1986 found that secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer, and also concluded that merely separating smokers from nonsmokers doesn't eliminate the threat from secondhand smoke.

The new report pulls together evidence from the numerous studies that have been done on secondhand smoke since that time. It includes in-depth analyses of the toxic effects of secondhand smoke, including how it causes cancer, damages the respiratory tract, and harms the circulatory system. The report also examines the impact of secondhand smoke on children, and looks at exposure levels in the United States.

In terms of cancer, the report confirms that secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer and that nonsmokers who live with a smoker have a 20%-30% higher risk of lung cancer because of exposure to secondhand smoke.

The report says there isn't enough evidence to say for sure that secondhand smoke causes breast cancer, but existing evidence is "suggestive."

Other major conclusions:

Secondhand smoke causes premature death and disease in adults and children who do not smoke.
Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate negative effects on the heart, and causes heart disease and lung cancer.
Secondhand smoke can worsen asthma in children, and puts them at risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), respiratory infections, and ear problems.
Scientific evidence shows that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
Millions of American adults and children are still exposed to secondhand smoke at home and in the workplace.
Having separate smoking and nonsmoking areas, cleaning the air, and ventilating buildings cannot eliminate secondhand smoke exposure. Prohibiting smoking in indoor spaces does.

tHIS IS WHY THE SMOKING BAN IN PUBS MUST REMAIN IN FORCE
