XP has a firewall built in.

Zonealarm was always the top free one.

You get what you pay for with free stuff...mostly sh!te. Cough up the reddies for something decent.

use the built in xp one and get avast, that's all I've used for the past 5 years, no problems

what about windows defender ?

Is it better to prevent this working or use it as well as another.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do you use the XP firewall and the other one or switch off the xp one when installing the free one.
The reason for asking is I've just put XP pro onto a computer and heard that not everyone was convinced of the efficiency of the built in firewall and as I do a lot of online banking it is a concern.
I can't totally agreee that the free stuff is no good. Personally I've found Avast and Ad-aware very good and found Norton more trouble than it was worth particularly if you need to take it off.

avast & avg are anti-virus programs, what you are asking about is the firewall. Whichever one you use, you must switch off the other one to avoid conflicts.

for additional security when online I would also recomend keyscrambler, which is free and encrypts all your keystrokes in IE, thereby protecting logins & passwords

Zone alarm is good, however have had cases of it making games crash, even when not connecting to the net.

All you need is a decent dedicated hardware firewall imo, and the built in windows firewall as back up if you really have to.
