I believe that about two thirds of police are responding to crimes in some way related to drugs also about the same number of prison places are allocated for people who in some way ended up there because of drugs. How many billions of pounds spent on law inforcement would be saved if drugs were made a legal product?
Every time you here of some large drugs bust where millions of pounds of drugs have been seized the police and the authorities are seen on the television patting themselves on the back but it has been estimated that even in a good year the police can stop only about 10% of the drugs coming in. Question, what happens to the price of a commodity if it gets scarcer? Answer, the price goes up, so every time you see a policeman congratuallating themselves about how well he's done by confiscating a large haul of drugs, that in affect means 11 grannies instead of 10 get mugged because of the laws of supply and demand.

Only a moron, would like there to be even more drugs available.
As for a reduction in crime, there is a booming trade in contraband and fake tobacco and booze, involving dangerous and armed criminals.
You think once Gordon Brown has added 50% to the cost in taxation, the same people won't still in business? Exept now their jail terms will be far less.

Yes although junkies would stil need to rob etc. to fund it as no doubt the government would tax them at least in line with alcohol

there is a thriving tobacco industry but not an import booze industry. I know of nobody that gets their booze from illegal sources. Toacco is only thriving because the same product is available cheaper elsewhere.
If the gvt legalised drugs there would be opportunity for big business to make good standardised products that would create jobs and tax revenue. Most drug users do not want to source their products from local scallies. The difference with tobaccco is that the products are pretty much impossible to "cut", whereas drugs are easily watered down. this is why most people would buy from official sources if they could. No way could the illegal industry compete on price. There are too many middle-men wanting a huge cut.
The amount we save locking up dealers could be spent imprisoning real criminals that ruin peoples' lives like burglars, rapists and violent offenders for a decent amount of time.
My mate got 2 years for selling 5 pills to a copper. My best mate's ex has just been convicted of his 5th GBH at 35 years ol and is doing 200 hours community service because he has kids (that he never sees). where is the sense in that.

What about this - if there is more research into and standardisation of legal alternatives? Alcohol is essentially already one - why not a little more work on the herbal alternatives to the hallucinogenic etc.
Could have two effects:
1/ People try it, like it, pay more tax. Cheaper and safer than hard drugs, plus might prevent people who are "just trying it" and then fall into a criminal lifestyle.
2/ It has 'the gateway effect' and lessens the stigma of trying drugs.

flutter kid, the issue should not be one of safety. Adults should be allowed to make their own decisions without interference from the government.

all users of cocaiune and heroin will be violent ionly 25% users of booze are violent, have read that only 3% cannabis users become violent compared with 25% of alchohol users and 100% of cocaine and heroin users (ok this is just a guess the 100%) maybe the real figure is nearer 80%.

Yep, let's make heroin, cocaine and marijuana as popular as alcohol and tobacco. Let's have the chavs and the over-educated **s out of their skulls and facing the longterm cancers and brain damage that even short-term drug usage will induce.

Of course they should be legal.
Those that dont agree miss the point , just look at the netherlands to see the advantages of decriminalising drugs.
Most the people smoking there are on drug holidays from countries where drugs are illegal , the locals dont bother as legalising drugs takes the fun out of them.
I had a bad drug problem when i was younger and it mainly developed by having to hang around in the drug subculture , the more you sink into it the more surrounded by dealers etc you become.
Im sure if drugs had been legal i wouldnt of bothered much with them. Or if i did then i would at least be taking them in a safer environment and wouldnt of been scared to go to a doctor if something bad happened

When you are dead they will examine your brain and find abnormalities that are presently changing your life for the worse. Add that to your increased risk of various cancers and you have a foreshortened and less fulfilled life to look forward to because you became a junkie.

History is against you on that one. Drugs are the province of cowards and the most cowardly of all are too scared to take illegal drugs. Legalise them and you will find many times more join the ranks of the druggies.
Do we really want a police force that got high last night, judges and juries who were spaced out at the weekend and a legislature that sniffs coke between speeches from the front bench?
What about primary school teachers who are still ragged out from the joints they had for supper yesterday?
