nah. and with less publicity it won't be any easier. will just get forgotten.
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 9:21 AM BST
He would have been shot if he had asked them to keep their voices down, take their glasses to the bar, sit down, stand up or move along quietly at closing time, the cigarette was incidental, he was shot because he 'disrespected' them.
Report Stemroach July 27, 2007 9:21 AM BST
So much for the ban saving lives
Report sj July 27, 2007 9:21 AM BST
About time we brought back the death penalty.
Report canaryboy July 27, 2007 9:22 AM BST
yeah agreed, just saying that was the incident that triggered it.
Report Kent Brockman July 27, 2007 9:22 AM BST
Ive always been someone who has stood up to louts and done the decent thing, on the grounds that I can out run someone in the event they pulled out a knife.

But a gun - any idiot can pull a trigger. Will just keep quiet now, let the louts rule, and stick to nice areas that are less "edgy"
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 9:22 AM BST
Shocking, poor bloke, what motivates these people?

Report Stemroach July 27, 2007 9:26 AM BST
How the hell did they manage to get a shooter into a nightclub, ffs?
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 9:27 AM BST
Reading between the lines the bouncers were wary of them and probably didn't want to search them.
Report .08 July 27, 2007 9:27 AM BST

Report Terence James July 27, 2007 9:36 AM BST
Was out for a family meal last week, 6 couples in a restaurant / bar. Afterwards my brother in law went outside to get a cab and bumped into a guy he worked with. The guy said ' C'mon let's have it ' and lumped my Brother in law in the face, splitting him just above his eye which needed a load of stitches. Bouncers did nothing, just watched. Was right on their doorstep too.
Report Slicer July 27, 2007 9:38 AM BST
I hope that he will repay this guy as he knows who he is!
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 3:51 PM BST
A former British heavyweight boxer who was shot in the head during a row at a bar has died after his life support machine was switched off.
James Oyebola, 47, was shot at the back of Chateau 6 in Fulham Road, south-west London, in the early hours of Monday, after asking customers to stop smoking.

Police said he died at 1239 BST after his life-support was switched off. Family and friends were at his bedside.
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 3:51 PM BST
I wonder how Patricia Hewitt feels tonight..........?
Report chips n gravy July 27, 2007 3:56 PM BST
Why is it that these idiots who mouth off about "respect" or being shown no respect are clueless to the meaning of the very word.

If they didn't have a gun the boxer would have had the upper hand.

I cant stand violence, but no one has a chance against a gun.
Report Ghostdog July 27, 2007 4:04 PM BST
You would think you have no chance, but if you're good enough it's not really true. It's hard to pull a gun and hit somebody before they get to you. Different if it's in the hand, but not always.

I know a guy who will take any number on, he's a doorman in places nobody else will do, and he's had guns pulled on him twice. Once he took the gun out of the hand, another time he just went forward into six of them. He knew the guy wouldn't shoot. But he is very skilled and totally nuts as well.
Report Zaubi July 27, 2007 4:05 PM BST
these guys shot him as they were walking out the door. didn't stand much of a chance

That's terrible news PD. He's the first (and probably won't be the last) victim of a ridiculous new law. I wonder how good that makes the non-smoking lobby feel?

My reply yesterday when Poppydog told me the news James wasn't expected to survive.
Report Pounf July 27, 2007 4:07 PM BST
Anyvbody caught carrying a gun should be locked up for 30 years. End of.
Report Pounf July 27, 2007 4:08 PM BST
or have the choice of chemical castration
Report chips n gravy July 27, 2007 4:08 PM BST
Why should the non-smoking lobby feel anything? The law will not be changed over this.
Report sllehsgge July 27, 2007 4:10 PM BST
For 08.

Doctors at Charing Cross Hospital had declared Mr Oyebola brain dead on Thursday.

Police said he was shot after asking three men to stop smoking in a covered courtyard area at the back of the bar, on the Fulham Road.

Police believe three black suspects, aged between 19 and 25, ran from the club in separate directions.

Officers from Operation Trident, which deals with gun violence within the black community, have searched three addresses in the Wandsworth area in connection with the shooting.
.

RIP James Oyebola.
Report boopster July 27, 2007 4:10 PM BST
These** would have shot him whatever he had been asking them. They just needed the excuse. Hope that one of the has the guts to come forward and that they are locked up for life.
Report chips n gravy July 27, 2007 4:12 PM BST
Boopster they wont come forwards because they don't have the moral fibre to do that.

They are cowards thats why they were carrying a gun.

When they do get found, let them rot.
Report Tommy Toes July 27, 2007 4:14 PM BST
The point is, he probably wouldn't have spoken to them at all if it hadn't been for the smoking ban. Thus, he wouldn't have been shot.
Report Ghostdog July 27, 2007 4:16 PM BST
I've lost a friend this way. The horror of guns is that some fool can shoot once out of bravado and if you're unlucky that's it.

That's why 5 years for carrying one is a joke. RIP to the guy.
Report boopster July 27, 2007 4:17 PM BST
Tommy - maybe, but it's possible that they did it to cause trouble & had it not been smoking would have probably done something else.
Report Tommy Toes July 27, 2007 4:20 PM BST
That's pure speculation, boopster.
The facts are; he asked them to stop smoking because of the new law - and lost his life because of it.
Report aziraphale July 27, 2007 5:03 PM BST
can't believe the smokers are trying to use this incident against the smoking ban. Disgusting.
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 5:05 PM BST

Well let's start sl*gging off the Wright Bros for all the plane crashes,
Henry Ford for all the car crashes, Mr Smith & Mr Wesson for all the shootings, Ug the Caveman for the stabbings etc etc...

Pathetic. These** did it cos they are**, and they do it when they feel like it, and will invent excuses if necessary.

incident nothing to do with smoking. Just bad timing. The kind of** who carry and use guns like this are cowards...the sad thing apart from the man who dies is that when the idiots are caught..and its likely they will be..they will get 'life' which in modern Britain means they will do 7-12 years and be realeased on 'licence' to continue their worthless lives. The men involved will be between 24-32.....and will have previous records as long as your arm. They will be out when in their 40's to enjoy family life etc etc.Should be left to rot in prison for life. RIP JAMES
Report nononsense July 27, 2007 5:24 PM BST
of course it was to do with smoking ; he told them to stop doing it, ffs.
however, this doesn`t reflect smokers obviously
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 5:30 PM BST
'He told them to stop it' key word there being told I would think. They obviously didn't want to be told anything and shot him, if he had told them to quieten down for example the outcome would have been the same.
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 5:31 PM BST
As he died because the killers had been 'disrespected'.
Report casemoney July 27, 2007 5:32 PM BST
all im saying is that smokers now find them selfs having to talk to people they wouldnt have to, rsoles walking past pubs make comments etc ,they may not have guns but a belt of a glass is bad enough ,it just gives people looking for trouble another excuse to kick off ,i had an incident myself the other night which i wont go
into which would not have come to pass were i inside the pub
smoking and not outside, actually happened in ireland not here..
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 5:35 PM BST

Report baracouda30 July 27, 2007 5:41 PM BST
Yes there will be incidents. But by the same token, how many incidents will be averted because someone can get away from a flashpoint inside a pub by saying 'I'm going outside for a smoke'? No loss of face (metaphorically or otherwise) and time for everyone to calm down.

Swings and roundabouts.
Report Al Bionic July 27, 2007 5:45 PM BST
Wouldn't the other person just follow them outside and have more of an excuse as a result?
