Catt the problem is its stuck in hibernation mode, take the battery out power up on mains ,pull laptop input plug out (dont use on off switch)wait a few minutes ,put battery back in ,try to boot you might get a mode screen to reset to a best known configuration

This is a` common problem ,but sometimes its a tough nut to crack, leave battery in turn on as you turn on plug in mains plug, try some permutations with the mains plug, you are trying to cause an error that will bring the reset to best configuration screen up on boot I've ]seen this a few times,DONT repeately put the power plug in and out as this might trip something just now and again

ok i didnt think so. just checking cos i had a virus that gave me a black screen pretty much instantly on starting up, took me about 2 hours of trying until i finally got it to boot in safe mode.

have you tried to boot into bios instead of safe mode? repeatedly press the del key on boot, once in, reset bios to default settings (look around you will see it and what key ro press)

point is if you cant get into bios you wont be able to instruct the laptop to boot from cd as Sherlock Holmes would say its a 10 pipe problem,I'll look around see if I can come up with a solve for it

There is a possible work around that might jolt it into normal mode,if the CMOS battery (internal) is removed and put back after an hour or so (maybe longer as capacitors holding charge keeping volatile memory alive)

well your laptop main battery yes ,but there is an internal one ,a CMOS that keeps configurations, your laptop is stuck in hibernation setting, it has been known leaving a battery overnight to sort it though

If you're near derby I'll have a look at it tomorrow for you. Think rockin horse is on the right track definitely sounds like a bios problem - corrupt memory imo.
Sorta skipped through the thread, but I'm assuming you've done the usual checking such as removing harddrive, remove memory / wipe with cloth / replace etc
If you're going to open the lappy up, remove the main battery first ;) On the motherboard will be a jumper, near the cmos battery. It may have a plastic jumper to short pins 2-3, otherwise you can do something similar with a screw driver and short the two solder mounts on motherboard. Or take battery out, and then leave for at least 30 mins for charge to dissipate.

Cheers jimbo, if i take out the internal battery for an hour will i lose any important info...
Unfortumatley im not by derby but thanks for that, im in brum...

no you wont lose any info, its just bios settings, they can be reset to default anyway,if you have a digital camera take a snapshot,so if you get into trouble where anything goes, you can quickly sort it,remember the + - positions on the battery as you take it out, theres a good vchance it will work,if it does go into settings in control panel and switch off hibernation mode

OMG! It worked! :D My Asus X51R has been refusing to boot for about 3 months now due to "CMOS Battery Low", "CMOS Corrupt" and "CMOS Date/Time Not Set", and I have been unable to do anything due to both the F1 (continue) and F2 (Setup) asked for a BIOS password that I never set.
None of the default BIOS passwords I tried worked, and I had quite honestly given up hope.
But after following your instructions (holding the power button without any power source connected for 45 seconds), it now boots up perfectly.
The F1/F2 alternatives still appeared the first time I booted it, but without password requirements.
You're a lifesaver :)

And if you dont have a battery, go to a local pound shop, they will have packs of batteries that have all different sizes - bound to have the one your lappy needs.
Battery on most laptops I seem underneath keyboard towards trackpad, but if you're real unlucky it could be tucked away underneath or towards hinge.

the thing is if you are used to doing it its a simple procedure,it can bring very good results,as it resets bios and settings to factory state,go on to your laptops website and click on support see if the PDF manual is on there for download, find out where the battery is positioned, personally when you find it I'd just replace it,if it is encased in plastic get the same one off ebay or Maplin may have one,

Thats the problem with laptops they are very intricate to work on,if you are now unsure, screw everything back in place,go to a backstreet repair shop (pc world rip you off,and say its something else no doubt)just get a cmos battery replacement, see how it goes,

Many independent PC repair companies will check it for free and then up to you whether you pay them to**it. That's how I discovered my motherboard was bust and they advised me to just buy a new laptop (they didn't sell laptops so not dodgy advice).

Took the laptop apart this morning trying to locate the internal battery...got so far into it and could not carry on due to lack of knowledge.. i put it all back together and hey presto it fired up... i tried this a few times and it fired up..Now it has gone back in to what ever mode it was in before so a real head scratcher..
