At this time of year, many animals want to go into hibernation - hedgehogs but also creatures such as slow worms and grass snakes. Sheltered from the wind and the rain, they crawl into warm and dry piles of wood. The unlit bonfire is an oasis for many animals in the winter but when all those firework night bonfires are lit on November 5, they are suddenly burned to death.
Most communities start building their bonfires many weeks ahead. It would be much better to pile them up at the last minute. It is incredibly tempting to begin piling wood up early but if it can be stored somewhere and moved into place on the day this could save many animal's lives.
If a bonfire has been sitting in the same spot for days, organisers worried about killing hedgehogs - as well as smaller animals such as frogs and toads which have hopped and crawled in - could assemble a group of volunteers and simply move all the wood 20m away. It wouldn't take long and it would give the animals a chance to escape.
Not many bonfires about these days compared to say 10 or 20 yrs ago.Every rd and eevry estate and field and rec seemed to have a bonfire of some description. Not a huge fan of the night but its another thing with the health and safety nazis have neutered to such an extent it's a bit of a bore.Took my kid to a display last night they dodnt even have a Guy on the bonfire...WTF is all that about?? The fireworks looked like theyd been sponsored by the health and safety exec.No bangs or anything ..proper pooftahs night

Cannyman as ever your post is humane, intelligent and interesting. It will make people (I hope) think about their bonfire - which in my opinion never suffers from a relocation - and follow your advice.
If you don't already have an OBE/MBE/ the other 'BE(s) for services to promoting the welfare of animals, both pets and wildlife, an injustice is apparent.
Keep up the good work and best wishes to yourself.

I haven't seen anyone with a Guy for several years. It's such a shame.
Loads of kids came round on Saturday evening to mark the American festival of Hallowe'en, of course. Nine kids in total.
Twunts, the lot of 'em.

American festival? It's Scottish.
The name Halloween is Scottish, but the festival itself is much older.
Halloween is an annual holiday observed on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day, but is today largely a secular celebration.
Common Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, committing pranks, telling ghost stories or other frightening tales, and watching horror films.

three billion chickens worldwide. No shortage of them. Let's breed endangered animals for the farm. Tiger burgers. We could release the excess billions back into the wild to kill the chinese? It's a solution. Logic people. Pure logic.

I have built a hedgehog house for one regular visitor which looks a little under weight to make it through hibernation. It hasn't moved in yet but when it does I just hope it keeps coming out for food during the first cold snap.

They love suet pellets(pink variety) and I top up with cat biscuits kenny. They also go mad for a little bit of apple crumble cake as a treat. Water is important if you feed em dry stuff.

That's kind of you Kenny. I feed my slugs and snails radishes, lettuces. courgettes, cabbages, spuds, seedlings and much more.
They simply help themselves to whatever is growing in the garden.

Thanks Dr, I also feed slugs as well, but not as often as snails.
Here's a fabulous song and short film from the great Burl Ives, which I'm sure you'll remember.
