I live about 1/4 mile away from where B'ham City Council hold many concerts, bonfires and celebrations of lots of Religious festivals, namely Cannon Hill Park
All of these end with massive fireworks displays and tbh if you're there some of them are spectacular. But if I stay at home, all I get is the Boom, Boom, Boom of the music bass followed by what seem like an hour of explosions. What can I say, I hate the noise :( but it's great watching the free displays :) |

If any of you get the chance go to Lewes. It's the king of bonfires. The nearest thing to being in a war.
Loads of bonfire societies, each parading through the town, burning and banging as they go. The noise is unbelievable. Fire everywhere. Effigies packed with explosives do the route. With the bigger societies the identity of the main one is top secret. One year Gadaffi, another Sepp Blatter. 20 foot tall ready to blow up! Plod turn a blind eye but it breaks every health and safety law imaginable. Of course the Pope gets it every year. Fireworks fired straight at him and he's filled with them too. Take ear defenders and stay safe. It's not for children or the faint hearted. |

Not entirely comfortable viewing at times for those of us who are Catholics either!
Never mind. It was a fantastic night when I went in 1990. The last I remember of it was getting gloriously disorientated in the flames and explosions and darkness, losing touch with my friends, and then travelling back to Brighton in the early hours slung horizontally in an overhead luggage rack. Excellent stuff. |

Might give that a visit next year Injera.

Akabula - the video you posted shows just ONE of the Bonfire Societies in Lewes - the Cliffe. There are SEVEN in all, six of which march on the 5th (or the 4th if the 5th falls on a Sunday). The other societies march together but the Cliffe insist for various historical reasons to march alone. Their "no popery" banner and other banners commemorate the Lewes Martyrs (See Wiki extract below)
The Lewes Martyrs were a group of 17 Protestants who were burned at the stake in Lewes, East Sussex, England between 1555 and 1557. These executions were part of the Marian persecutions of Protestants during the reign of Mary I. Richard Woodman and 9 other people were burned together in Lewes on 22 June 1557, on the orders of Edmund Bonner, Bishop of London — the largest single bonfire of people that ever took place in England. Together with the Gunpowder Plot, the Lewes Martyrs are commemorated annually on or around 5 November by the Bonfire Societies of Lewes and surrounding towns and villages. I'd thoroughly recommend a visit, but try to stay in town if you can as it is a nightmare to get in and out of the town. Lewes is a lovely little town and well worth a visit on its own. I was christened in nearby Barcombe and my Grandad was in the Cliffe! |

One of seven! Jeez, looks incredible as it is without 6 more.
Definitely putting it on my list of to do next year. ![]() |

Yes indeed, life's too short, ours is anyway lol :-(

BTW Kenny suffering for my dog here.
Got a Take That in concert vid on so the music drowns out the fireworks. Take that because we're also looking after our neighbours 10 yo daughter. |

5 cats seem calm enough, just act normally they say. Wouldn't have thought 10 year old girls were into TT, more like 40 year old women.
Have a look at Talking Pictures channel when you get chance, quite brilliant. |
|
By:
I had a cover over the computer table and one of the speakers inside her tent.
Was a neighbour letting off the fireworks. He's got kids but an organised display is only a 10 min walk away. |
|
By:
That's cool, a tent in the house.
Well thank The Lord that's 98% over for another year. I hate it with a passion, serves no useful purpose whatsoever. Should have banned it when I was about 13. lol |
|
By:
TBF I thought it was a great event when I was younger.
But at that age I didn't think about the effect it had on pets and wild animals. I do think though that the fireworks today are much more powerful and not suited to a back garden. |
