My good friend Richard died today of cancer.
He was meant to last until April 2009 by his own admission.
I had hoped to speak to him again Christmas Day 2009. On 25/12/08 we talked - he gave an idea of his "vomit-y" Christmas, but made sure he asked me how everybody in my house was. He was the sort of guy who would bother even when he felt so awful after his chemotherapy.
I saw him twice after he was meant to have died. Both occasions in our favourite pub garden, full of people glad to be there among friends.
Those two evenings are still the happiest of my year.

I miss you Dick. Thank you for being here. Rest in peace.

Thank you all. This is also the first time I got the news via text message.

Was the first thing I saw when I got home (I forgot my phone today and was thinking about him all day)

Yep always good to have happy memories. I will never forget the last day I spent with my friend nick. Went to visit my dog in cheltenham he picked me up from the station and dropped me back off later on. We had a nice steak meal in a pub all paid for by the trainer. I wander how many dog trainers do that for their owners. Carl Hopkins a true kind man. Nick Hill will be forever missed by me.

I am sorry to hear of your loss parachute. I am sure your memories will sustain you as the years pass.

Even in this day and age, it doesn't really seem approprite to use a text message for such sad news.
Report parachute November 4, 2009 10:15 PM GMT
Fenway you are kind. However maybe it was apprpriate.
my last conversations with dick were by text. I could text him without waking him if he was sleeping and for once I was too. His last message is on my phone.

Sorry to hear of your loss Parachute.

The older we get the more friends we lose, until it's our turn to go.

I have a lovely photo of the gang.
It is safe as in if anyone wants it it is there

If I thought long and hard, I could probably name 500 people, works colleagues, neighbours, aquaintancies, family, pub mates, that I have conversed with and known who are no longer here.

Now there's a thought, and not a very pleasant one, as Blackadder once said.

Sorry to hear your news, parachute. I am sure your memories of the good times you spent together will help you get through this very difficult period.

I know it sounds cliched rubbish, but I'm sure he'd want you to celebrate his life.

All the best.

Very bad news but the memories do mellow, then instead of bringing sorrow they will bring smiles.

Wow

I'm going to my friend Rob's funeral tomorrow. Worked all his life (RAF Technician through to running his own Business Development consultancy). Made it to his late 50's - about the time when you're thinking of retring and spending the kids inheritance for the next 25 years - then was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January.

Fought it like a lion through to Monday last week and that was it - 6 months longer than expected but it still got him in the end.

It's always the good ones too.
