Everytime Gavin tips an antepost pick on the show or in his Saturday column, the market makes serious waves. If you watch the show on the tuesday evening and he tips a horse antepost say at 16/1 if you check the market its usually halved in price. Hes shifting markets as big as Segal did in top form.

Cheers Gav, thanks for that !
Report duffy December 21, 2021 5:21 PM GMT
irish, he actually comes across as a modest sort I think, the opening post is more likely to be Jennings bigging up the podGrin

Sorry, im neither of the above mentioned. I wouldnt be a big fan of DJ, Hes more of a journalist than a tipster and name dropper. He tipped Dysart Dynamo at 12s for the Ballymore now 7/1 on the SB. I wasnt gloryifying Gavin, I was just making the point whatever he tips shortens quite a bit.

Who is this bloke, and where does he make his tips/post his show?

barry geraghty was really sweet on constitution hill for the supreme /ballymore at 40/1 a week or so before  he made his debut ,said he is a really nice horse and uncomplicated and he was very upbeat about him.

DJ kept banging on about the tour he done at Nickys a few weeks back, he was coming across like he knew every secret in the yard. However the 1st time he was sweet on constitution hill was after he won by 28 lengths Surprised

Upping the ante. Great show. Very hard to hit the silent button every time Jennings butts in. They need to talk slower. Plus subtitles(they are Irish after all). 80% of all videos viewed by 18-30 years olds choose subtitles. I player. Netflix etc. and that’s the English ones not the Irish. Plus Jennings not on them interuppting.

The future video output only works these days with subtitles.

They re like morecambe and wise. Oliver and hardy.

Lynch the straight man. Jennings the joker.

But Jennings is ok. Every circus needs a clown.
Report ENGLANDBARNES1 January 9, 2022 7:32 PM GMT
I quite like it when I remember to watch it.
I take it they don’t have a podcast version?

You do wonder whether bookmakers cut the prices before the money even arrives. It is amazing how many sheep are out there. Isn't it more enjoyable to do the work yourself?

This is the first year I have watched Upping The Ante. His tips are very much better than Jennings, but they are hardly staggering. He has a few 'runners', but most are at 10/1 or less. It doesn't stop Jennings tips being cut as well, presumably by association.

They do get things badly wrong as well. Jennings put up Ahoy Senor at 10/1. Last time I looked you could get 14/1, and there must be a very good chance it won't even show up at Cheltenham. Britza was put up at 20/1 cut to a ridiculous 8/1, and after bombing was freely available at 33/1.
Report differentdrum January 15, 2022 5:59 PM GMT
I think he has put up Glenloe for the Kim Muir. An 11yo who has won one race in its life. Bookmakers have probably booked holidays off ante-post money already wasted on this one. All about being owned by JP. If it wasn't a ridiculous price before, it is now.
Report Quevega06 January 15, 2022 9:01 PM GMT
Their horses aren't up to Tuesday.. Is he tipping elsewhere?
Report Quevega06 January 15, 2022 9:01 PM GMT
It's being bet for Kim Muir because O'connor rides tomorrow
Report Ramruma January 15, 2022 9:55 PM GMT
Gavin has a column in (every) Saturday's Racing Post when he talks about runners over the weekend who are likely Cheltenham runners. The main one this week is Glenloe.

Watched this last night and you can tell Lynch is embarrassed evry time Jennings talks 1 up

Gavins Picks so far

Galopin 7/1 Brown Advisory
American Mike 11/2 Bumper
Fil Dor 10/1 Triumph
Ferny Hollow 10/1 Arkle
Buzz 8/1 Stayers
Blazing Khal 16/1 Albert Bartlett
Elimay 8/1 Mares Chase
Dysart Dynamo 12/1 Ballymore
Britzka 20/1 Boodles
Allegorie De Vassy 8/1 Mares Novice
Sir Gerhard 11/2 Supreme
Tellmesomethinggirl 5/1 Mares Hurdle
Report Ramruma January 16, 2022 2:23 PM GMT
Gav won't be happy if Dysart Dynamo goes for the "wrong" race after today's win.

I've just rewatched the last-but-one Upping the Ante from last year and sfaict DJ was actually more successful than Gavin but only 2-1 so it has not put Bet365 off sponsorship.
Report differentdrum January 16, 2022 4:10 PM GMT
Things are beginning to fall apart.

Dysart Dynamo - Supreme
Sir Gerhard - Ballymore

Glenloe, a shocking selection. Bookmakers have pushed him out to 20/1 from as short as a ridiculous 8/1. On that evidence he is more than 20/1 to even turn up.
Report differentdrum January 21, 2022 2:52 PM GMT
Going to be even less happy now with Blazing Khal gone. Swings and roundabouts as the Ferny Hollow price benefitted from the injury to Appreciate It.
Report differentdrum January 21, 2022 7:16 PM GMT
Has he just put up Gerri Colombe at 16/1 for the Albert Bartlett?

Having been twice those odds is that price really value? After an adequate hurdling debut he should remain unbeaten on Sunday, but the opposition is so poor I doubt it will provide much of a clue to his future prospects. He doesn't figure among the entries for the 2m6f Grade 1 at the Dublin Racing Festival. Presumably, the same owner's Journey With Me will go there, and the outcome should dictate his Festival target. I think a number of people have been fooled by the colours into thinking Journey With Me is the new Bob Olinger. He isn't close. He doesn't have anything like the gears. As far as I can see the Albert Bartlett looks the right target for both Journey With Me and Gerri Colombe. What are the odds on the owner running both? I would say very slim, so you are left hoping he will be fooled into running Journey With Me in a likely much more difficult to win Ballymore.
Report Ramruma January 21, 2022 8:31 PM GMT
Yes, he has put up Gerri Colombe. He had previously put up Blazing Khal who is, of course, now out.
Report differentdrum January 21, 2022 10:08 PM GMT
He isn't going to be happy if he looks at the markets for the Turners and Brown Advisory.

For some reason Galopin Des Champs is suddenly being cut as if he was going to take on Bob Olinger. Why would you want to take on Bob Olinger over his ideal trip with in all likelihood L'Homme Presse making sure you didn't get a freebie on the front end? Makes no sense at all.
Report brandyontherocks January 22, 2022 11:31 AM GMT
It wouldn't worry me if GDS ran in The Turners. His jumping looked electric on debut which suit the shorter of the 2 novice chases he is entered for.

I'm sure i read somewhere that Ruby has said he would favour the intermediate trip with GDS. So that probably means he will go for the RSA.

Gallopin des Champs is a strong stayer though, it was noted how long it took to pull him up on debut and he put in a stunning display of jumping, I'd have thought the more fences the better.
Report differentdrum January 24, 2022 11:06 AM GMT
Gerri Colombe duly won, but couldn't have been less impressive. On that evidence he should be 16-20/1 for the Albert Bartlett, but because Lynch stuck him up he is as short as 7/1.
Report duffy January 24, 2022 3:56 PM GMT
dd,

Did Lynch used to nick your dinner money at school or something?
Report differentdrum January 25, 2022 12:48 AM GMT
I don't think so.

I actually prefer him to most pundits. In fact I much prefer him to the likes of Pricewise and Kealy. It is just a shame that he has to work with Jennings.

That doesn't mean he gets everything right.
Report duffy January 27, 2022 5:55 PM GMT
Ferny Hollow will be a gutter for him too, took a punt on him over AI at 8's I believe.
Report differentdrum January 27, 2022 7:37 PM GMT
I am almost feeling sorry for him, but as I suggested the 10/1 Ferny Hollow was before the Appreciate It injury.

List is almost reduced to the 7/1 Galopin Des Champs. Let's hope Willie isn't stupid enough to consider the Turners.
Report brandyontherocks January 28, 2022 2:26 PM GMT
Why do you think running him over 2m 5f would be stupid, DD?
Report differentdrum January 28, 2022 4:47 PM GMT
We are talking about the ante post favourite for next year's Gold Cup, not a potential Ryanair winner. He has already won a Grade 1 novice hurdle over the longer trip, and he finished very strongly on his chasing debut giving the impression he would be even better over further. So the three reasons for me would be the better route to a Gold Cup, the likelihood he is going to be better over further, and the biggest, and the most obvious factor, there is no Bob Olinger in the longer race. It is also likely that he would have L'Homme Presse in the shorter race so every chance that between them that would just set the race up for the favourite. So assuming you think he is going to stay (and why wouldn't you?) the longer race looks the much easier assignment.

I am not one of those who has got a fancy price for the Brown Advisory, but I couldn't contemplate backing him for the Turners.

It is important not to get too carried away. He was spectacular, but to date he has only won a novice chase. Next week he has to go and do it again.
Report duffy January 28, 2022 5:28 PM GMT
The way he jumped those fences coupled with how strong he appeared at the finish I'd have thought the more fences the better....basically!
Report brandyontherocks January 28, 2022 9:24 PM GMT
The way he jumps I would say the less fences over the shorter would be suit him much better.
He doesn't pop them like a stayer he wings them which uses much more energy.

I think he would destroy Bob over this trip.

Obviously, DD, you don't remember Imperial Commander winning over this trip at the festival before being stepped up to win the Gold Cup the following season?

I don't think you have to run your future Gold Cup hopeful in the RSA.
Report differentdrum January 28, 2022 10:17 PM GMT
I do remember Imperial Commander, but that was a Ryanair, presumably in his second season chasing. He is the only example. It's also a small sample but no horse has gone on from winning the intermediate novice distance to win a Gold Cup. I doubt Chantry House will change that record this year.

Galopin Des Champs has only had one run over fences, and he didn't seem to have used up too much energy. I would actually think it would be more of an effort for a horse who consistently jumps slowly. I think you underestimate Bob Olinger and the issue of another horse taking on Galopin Des Champs. That scenario is much less likely to happen over a longer trip.

You haven't said, but I presume you have backed Galopin Des Champs for the Turners?
Report brandyontherocks January 28, 2022 10:38 PM GMT
No I haven't. I had him in a treble to win the RSA with Ferny but that is in the bin now.

I thought the obvious race for him would be the RSA but watching him at Christmas I changed my mind. He was so electric at his fences and galloped so powerfully through the line that I thought there was no need to step him up in trip this season.
I see he is entered over 2m 5f at the DRF next week.

I appreciate he has had only one run but Bob will go to Cheltenham with just 2 runs under his belt too.
Bob is very classy, that is not questionable. But what I have seen he, is definitely a better hurdler than chaser.
Report ENGLANDBARNES1 January 29, 2022 1:50 AM GMT
Willie normally goes for the easiest race, which is the Turners on a more galloping track, which he already won the Martin Pipe on 12 months ago.
Why risk taking on Bravemansgame who also dances when approaches a fence in a similar manner?

Take on Bob who will just pop them, and take out a length at each fence!

The Rsa also looks a deeper race with Fury Road looking a different animal last time out.
Report rolland February 21, 2022 10:43 PM GMT
Gallopin is overrated hasn't beaten much this season. Won't matter which race he runs 8n - poor value, won't win either.
