Starting up the Gold Cup thread to share thoughts for the big one in March.

Minella, Galvin and Chantry have all had a run and performed well enough. The Betfair Chase looks a cracker if they all turn up and King George likewise.

Not sure when APT will surface but expect it will be around Xmas.

Any early thoughts 4 months out ?

I think Protektorat will run in either the Cotswold Chase or the Denman. A good performance there will see him cut I would think.

I think Protektorat has been flatted by his drubbing of Native River who's been retired immediately after. I believe Protekorat needs to improve at least 10lbs to be considered a serious contender for this race. Another Chantry House perhaps, but Chantry Horse does have a proven superior CV at Cheltenham.

Report ENGLANDBARNES1 January 21, 2022 9:36 AM GMT
Not sure about that Irishone, it can happen on the old course as you are always on the turn, making it sometimes harder to win from off the pace.
Protectorat was mid div when blundering with one lap to go, so will of been given time over a fence or two before starting to try and improve position.
You also need to factor in the Paddy Power is 6 furlongs shorter and on less of a stamina sapping course.

The negative then and in the Gold cup will be Harry Skelton is I’ll happily back his horses away from Cheltenham but try to stay away from him due to his judgement of pace at HQ.

Another negative is if Protektorat holds his form this season, unlike last, gaps between races could help this though and you’d hope 7 and 6 weeks between Aintree, to Cotswold chase, to the Gold Cup would resolve this.

Think Protek going straight to Cheltenham now will help his cause.
Hes done nothing but improve for stepping up in distance, and is now rewarding his connections for the patience they have showed with him, big player imo.
Chantry House is another whose improved for the step up in distance, and should be ideally suited to the Gold Cup conditions, as opposed to Kempton.Hes performed well at Cheltenham and i expect him to perform well again.
Fiddler ran a good race in the RSA, and again in the Ladbroke this season, and is an interesting outsider.
Really not sure about MI this year, but i do expect him to bounce back from the run at Kempton.
APT has an obvious chance, and must surely go close.
The one they all have to beat is Galvin imo.
Hes absolutely tailor made for a Gold Cup, in form and goes straight to Cheltenham now.

To be honest it looks a cracker to me this year, and whilst i think Galvin wins, i would not be shocked if either of last years 1st and 2nd won, and if Protek, CH and Fiddler continue to improve i can see either of those figuring in the finish.

Your reliance upon handicap chase form in the UK was one of the weaknesses pointed out by the BHA in their report after last year's festival debacle.

Whilst you proudly point towards native river, denman snd bobsworth  as hennesey winners in the last 20 odd years wining gold cups you by pass the reasoning of the BHA.

The Irish are running in Grade 1's now ....off level weights. What I should have done was added "Irish" grade ones. My apologies.
Report sageform January 25, 2022 7:30 PM GMT
Jodami had daft rides in the Hennessy and his second Gold Cup. He could gallop all day and when ridden by a conditional in a bumper and hurdles he just went from the front and had everything beaten by half way and won by 20 lengths every time. Mark Dwyer for some reason always held him up and he had no finishing speed. When he won the Gold Cup, the Pipe horse went a mad pace and only Jodami could live with him so all Jodami had to do was keep galloping when the leader ran out of gas. The next year there were about 10 horses on the bridle 3 out including the very slow Topsham Bay so Jodami got beaten by The Fellow who had a good turn of foot. Ridden from the front I don't think he would ever have been beaten.

Bad luck! Have you had a prize in the ttf since? I can remember the race well. As a huge fan of Jodami, I was not sure that Rushing Wild would come back to him until the second last but the rest were nowhere. When Jodami ran at Haydock a few years later I was on track and able to stand close to him in the unsaddling after winning the Peter Marsh chase. His head was the biggest I have ever seen on a racehorse-more like a Shire horse. That was despite being descended from blue bloods like Crepello and Busted.
Report The Sawyer January 27, 2022 7:48 AM GMT
No sage no joy at all. I think it was a different format originally where you could select any horse in training rather than being restricted to the Tote's list. I used to put Suluk in all my entries as you could almost guarantee 6 or 7 wins from him at Southwells jump track.

I saw Jodami win two of his three Hennessey victories at Leopardstown and the racecourse named the bar on the first floor after him although this is no more and the area restricted to members/ hospitality.
Report duffy January 27, 2022 2:54 PM GMT
I used to put in Skippers Cleuch or whatever Lungo novice hurdler was n vogue as you knew he'd rack up a few gimmes up north before facing anything half decent and when he did send them down south and in Skipper's case he got found out as kicking the hurdles out of the way wasn't conducive to beating the big guns.

I've not seen who the pilot on Minella Indo (MI) either. I understand Ms Blackmore has ridden a couple of injudicious races on him nevertheless, stable pilot ought to be on the stable's sole runner.

Does that mean Ms Blackmore will not be onboard either if A Plus Tard (APT) is an absentee and/or if Kennedy is "released" by Elliot/Gigginstown and/or Delta Work is scratched?; 10% of £140k euro is a sizeable sum to forego even for Ms Blackmore.

I'd like to see Bryony/Frodon do the business again, mind saying Kemboy but an extremely difficult horse to catch right. Minella Indo??

Report duffy February 5, 2022 5:45 PM GMT
Aside from the winner today I thought it was a very encouraging run from MI, I question if they went that quick and while Conflated showed some pace to get away, MI was at first getting hampered by a back pedalling Frodon and then got momentarily held up by Kemboy. He then attempted to get after Conflated and it looked for a moment promising before the effort of a practical 2 furlong sprint took it's toll and he flattened out late.

Still, he jumped well and in this race last year Henry stated that he was happy for it to be a confidence booster and I reckon he'd be delighted with how it went today on that front. Puts him right back in the picture going back to the place we know he excels at. I think as the festival approaches he is only going to strengthen in the market.
Report impossible123 February 5, 2022 6:19 PM GMT
Conflated is the only horse to take from this race. He was given a dream ride by Russell keeping to the inside throughout, and is improving; Minella Indo had every chance and ran much better than in the King George; Kemboy lost all chance by jumping repeatedly to the right and keeping wide.

I think the proximity of Janidil to Minella Indo was telling for the latter.

Conflated won a comparative speed test today, and it is no coincidence that the winner of this race has a poor record in Gold Cups. My concern as an admitted MI fan (and nothing against Robbie Power) is that I did not believe for one minute that Power would keep the ride in the GC with Kennedy likely being available, but Conflated has thrown a spanner in the works now.

However I have a sneaky suspicion in the way that Elliott answered the GC question afterwards that he wouldn't fancy his chances against Galvin and CO in a GC and if he had his way wouldn't necessarily run him but the trainer will have a job on his hands convincing Gigginstown not to run.

However 10/1 NRNB for Conflated in the Ryanair is interesting to me to win their own race where as usual most in the betting won't run, if he did run he'd be a clear 2nd fav. For now I've had a few speculative quid on him at 17 in the without Allaho market on the exchange, but I do expect Giggy to run him in the GC but I think the prices on offer make it worth a speculative bet.

Melon looks big at 66/1 considering his record at Cheltenham (mainly on the old course though). He actually holds an entry in the Grand National and unusually missed the Dublin Racing Festival.
So he comes to Cheltenham fresher, and will of been trained with more emphasis on stamina with the National in mind.

All be it over shorter, the John Durkan is working out well with Asterion Furlongs looking set for second in the king George which the 5th won.
Allaho has also won, all be it in an egg and spoon race thanks to Fakir D’oudairies first fence mistake . Everything has atleast placed since from that race except Minella Times who is protecting its mark for obvious reasons.

Melon has only been out once since and while only 4th, the jockey has since gone out saying he ruined his own chances by not taking on stablemate Kemboy.
Melon is a horse that seems best off a very quick pace though so he may need Minella indo and A Plus Tard to take each other on early.

Annoying the exchange price is only 70, for a horse that rarely wins, it’s a no brainer to cover it each way.
Report brandyontherocks February 14, 2022 1:35 PM GMT
Before the Irish Gold Cup last week I wrote this message to a mate regarding Asterion. Just an observation.........

Something I have noticed with Asterion Forlonge that maybe worth noting or disregarding who knows.
In the last two seasons he has ran in six Grade 1 chases. Fell in 3 completed in 3.
His first fall came at Christmas last season in the Faugheen Chase. He fell 5 out so still a long way from home.
His other two falls have been this season which have been well documented. Still going well and looked to be able to play his hand in the finish.
But I have focused on his completed starts in Grade 1s.
He ran at last seasons Dublin Festival behind Monkfish. Admittedly he would never have beaten Monkfish that day but he travelled really well until the home turn and then was one paced and plodded home.
In the Marsh at Cheltenham, if you freeze the replay just before jumping two out you would say he was travelling best. If had had one of his tumbles there you would call him unlucky. Much like this seasons Durkan behind Allaho. He jumps two out and goes out like a light and is one paced up the hill.
His next outing was at the Fairyhouse Festival. Again coming to two out he is hard on the bridle and looking to play a big part. He jumps two out and again goes from cruising to one paced up and down on the spot.

I just wonder what this horse finds when he has to fight out a finish. On last seasons evidence, ..... not a lot

Comparing Protektorat in the same vein as Desert Orchid or Silver Buck is sheer madness.

That's not the point. It might be rare to see handicappers taking Group 1 flat races, but that rule
simply can't be applied to NH.

Galvin and A Plus Tard are running for me. Just hoping they run better than Shishkin.

I think it's safe to say Protektorat is merely a handicapper and not a Gold Cup horse after today's performance. He was stuffed by A Plus Tard in the gold Cup, and today by Clan Des Obeaux; hope and dream up in a puff of smoke.

Do you not think he ran like a horse who had just ran his heart out in the Gold Cup. A horse who has had breathing problems in the past and may need more time between races?
Not the first horse to run well in a Gold Cup and fail here.

If you're correct, every horse except A Plus Tard who ran in the Gold Cup is no more than a handicapper.

Even the mighty Kauto Star got beaten in the Bowl after a hard Gold Cup. No shame in Protektorat blowing up today. But the Gold Cup itself tells you he's a mid-160s horse.

Bravemansgame was very disappointing today.
I can forgive L'Homme Presse after his run at Cheltenham.
Ahoy Senor showed what he can do when given the right conditions. If he can improve his jumping he could be a player next March if the ground is good.
