Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman described the shock 1-0 World Cup qualifier defeat by Luxembourg as a "horrible and embarrassing night".

The Republic's World Cup hopes look now in tatters after two opening defeats and Coleman said the Irish "didn't deserve anything from the game".

"We got what we deserved, which was nothing," said the Everton full-back.

Coleman added: "It's a very embarrassing night for us as international players.

"It is what it is. We got beaten 1-0 at home to Luxembourg. That's no disrespect to Luxembourg.

England's home match against Germany was played on Saturday 7 October 2000, and was significant as it was the last international fixture ever to be played at the old Wembley Stadium, before it was demolished and rebuilt. England lost 1–0 to a German free kick scored by Dietmar Hamann. "It was the last refuge of the inadequate. Half-time neared, England were a goal down and a sizeable section of the crowd sullied the ever-dampening occasion. 'Stand up if you won the War,' they sang", wrote journalist Ian Ridley in his match report for The Observer.[23]

Qatar couldn’t make it up.

No wins in 11 games.

Kenny's start the worst by Irish boss in 50 years - the best of the stats

Stephen Kenny remains without a victory after 11 games in charge of the Republic of Ireland (D5 L6), the worst start by a manager with the Boys In Green since Mick Meagan, who failed to win any of his 12 games in charge between 1969 and 1971.
Qatar are unbeaten in their last four games across all competitions, with this draw coming after victories over Bangladesh, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan. Prior to this, they had lost three and drawn one of their previous four.

They are as good as Ally Pally, Folkestone, Hurst Park, Towcester, Lanrak, Bogside, Stockton and Wye. Places where the Populace of the U K could see or train or own horses that are now closed. The country is at fault unfortunately. Overcrowded, misdirected and spiralling downhill fast.

Connections refused to run Tiger Roll in last year's race off a mark of 166. The handicapper made the concession and dropped a dual winner of the race 5lb. What more do they want?

He comes into this year's race just 2lb higher than when he absolutely hacked up in 2019. An extra 2lb would not have stopped him that day. In weights and measures he'd actually carry 1lb less (he is currently on 11st 4lb this year and carried 11st 5lb to victory that day).

Moreover, given Gigginstown own one of the two topweights in Conflated they can absolutely guarantee the weights do not go up at all – if they wanted to. Gordon Elliott said he thought he'd been given "a nice weight".

Letting him in off any lower than 161 undermines the integrity of the whole contest and is unfair on the other 106 entries and 39 competitors. You cannot have exceptions to the handicap; its sole purpose is to level the playing field.

Furthermore, if you want to go down the road that Tiger Roll's participation would have been so good for the sport, I'd bear in mind the fact that sports have to toe a fine line when it comes to making their product more watchable.

Look at the finish to the F1 season. The title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen created the massive interest, millions worldwide were drawn to the finale, but a great many were left with a sour taste and a reinforcement in their conviction the sport was not worth following after some highly questionable decisions, decisions that felt weighted far more in what would create the most drama than in following the sport's rules.

Sport is entertainment, yes, but mess with the basic principles of fairness and competition and you become wrestling, an athletic but scripted theatre production designed to thrill. In this case, the fair thing to do was to give Tiger Roll a mark befitting of a dual winner, even if he is 12.

1973 Red Rum 10st 5lb
1974 Red Rum 12st
1975 Red Rum 12st
1976 Red Rum 11st 10lb
1977 Red Rum 11st 8lb

Tiger roll went up 6lbs after his first win I think. Red Rum +23lbs between 73 and 74. So O'Leary is whining without real reason.

Rummy also turned on the Blackpool illuminations, can't see the Tiger doing that.
Report Hibore February 17, 2022 2:47 PM GMT
Maybe they should just award the race to Tiger Roll or give him a lap start as he’s 12.
Report irishone February 17, 2022 8:16 PM GMT

Red Rum was a great Irish bred horse !

Red Rum was bred at Rossenarra stud in Kells, County Kilkenny, Ireland, by Martyn McEnery. His sire was Quorum (1954–1971), and his dam Mared (1958–1976). Mared was a granddaughter of the broodmare Batika, whose other descendants have included the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Turtle Island.[6] McEnery gave Red Rum his name by taking the last three letters of the names of his dam and sire, respectively.[7]
Report kevinglass February 18, 2022 10:12 AM GMT
Yep, he was born on my Dad's birthday too.

Think Tiger Roll is great by the way. Hope he wins the Cross Country at Cheltenham.

Just not keen on the owners.
Report impossible123 February 18, 2022 11:35 AM GMT
If Tiger Roll has the remotest chance of winning his owners will run him. As it's they are whinging (again) about his allocated weight.

Tiger Roll is no Red Rum. The National does not need him - the bookies do!
Report misselephantstone February 18, 2022 3:53 PM GMT
Irishone, fair play to the irish horses last year, but surely its more important
to view great horses winning at a great race meeting or is your point just a
bigoted approach? I hope we have 28 great races irrespective of its/their nationality.
take care.
