2 time champ
Deserves his own thread.

Back on the track today, be very interesting to see how he shapes up on his quest to join the great triple winners.
The 2 novice hurdle winners from March take him on,so very intriguing.
Not seen Summerville Boy yet, so we don't know how fit he is,but he looked a good winner of the supreme, and is pretty tough judging on his novice season.
We have seen Samcro, and he has to improve a fair bit on that run to win this I think.
But coming out of novice season, hes entitled too.
Trainer form and first time out to me makes BD a tad vulnerable today, but if he runs a big race its ominous for the rest imo
Certainly hope he does.
Watch and no bet for me today. Cant see any value anywhere.
Hope to see
A race to watch and no bet for me.

You can criticize Laurina's price but a number of factors have contributed to it, the fact that the division is weak for one, we can also assume that she must be out performing the likes of Melon and Sharjah on the gallops and considering how close Melon got last year allied with the progression that Sharjah in particular is showing I find that quite notable that they're at least double her price.

I'm not saying she's another AP (before anyone jumps on that) but AP never ran against a single horse of CH calibre, not one, not even remotely close to one  before hosing up in it, she doesn't have to prove she's worthy of her place before the race, she'll just have to do it on the day.
Report buddeliea January 14, 2019 6:05 PM GMT
Annie Power had a lot more experience behind her when connections finally decided to run her in the race, would have won more than one imo given the chance.
Laurina could literally be anything, none of us have any idea how good she is or can be.
You may have a point re whats going on at home, certainly that makes sense in regards to Ruby wanting to ride her(I believe that is right?)and the bookies prices.
Melon got close last year imo because the ground blunted the speed of BD and the staying power of BD won him that race.
I would not expect Melon to get close to BD on normal Tuesday festival ground.
Report impossible123 January 14, 2019 6:08 PM GMT
Laurina needs to be better than AP to beat Buveur D'Air (BD); AP and BD both beat My Tent Or Yours by the same margin at the Festival.

Personally, Vroum Vroum Mag and Limini all over again - both these horses were reckoned to be serious Champion Hurdle contenders.
Report firstimevisor January 14, 2019 9:29 PM GMT
I believe Gigginstown will run Apples Jade if Samcro doesn't line up and she would be their best chance of winning.

Its just nonsense saying she's not a 2 miler (she won a Grade 1 at Aintree by 41 lengths for god's sake and followed up at Punchestown). She's a super mare at any distance, end of.

She is a 7 y o rated 62, which is  exactly the same rating as that other "stayer" Annie Power had when she ran in it as an 8 y o.The tactics would be just the same - make the running and make it a brutal stamina test. And there won't be many still involved from 2 hurdles out.
Report duffy January 15, 2019 3:11 AM GMT
That jumping out to the right I wouldn't fancy much in a CH.
Report buddeliea January 15, 2019 8:02 AM GMT
Well looking back at her race record, AJ had good juvenile form, losing to IG at Cheltenham, and then thrashing the same horse at Aintree(why the big difference? the Aintree after Cheltenham factor perhaps??)
She then lost 2 races at 2m against the older horses, and was then stepped up to 2 and a halfm, presumably with mares races in mind, in particular Cheltenham. She has been very good in those races aside from two beatings by BDD.She has also had two races at 3m and won them both well.
All this tells me that connections see her as either a mares horse or a stayers horse in March.

Yes its possible connections could drop back to 2m,as AP did with success. AP was a super sub and hindsight tells us it was the right thing to do,and also hindsight tells me that they should have run her in the race before then instead of the Mares races and the stayers race she ran in!!! maybe that will happen with AJ as well.

I can only go on what the formbook tells me though, and that tells me shes been campaigned since her juvenile days with no thoughts of a Champion Hurdle. More thought about the Stayers seems to me.

If she does turn up in the Champion Hurdle that would be great, giving us extra intrigue and excitement.
She may well surprise me,fair enough if she did.
My feeling is BD would have too much speed for her, but no way of knowing for sure until it happened.
Report Autocue February 2, 2019 11:40 AM GMT
Apparently Nicky Henderson is fuming that other trainers have entered horses against Buveur D'Air in the Contenders Hurdle today. "As the reigning dual champion hurdler, the horse deserves a nice exercise canter with no rags to distract him. I'm trying to complete his preparations for the treble with the weather and everything else against me and it's a disgrace the BHA has allowed other trainers to use the Sandown course. My horses deserve the best and this is yet another example of the ****-eyed thinking we're getting from the BHA these days."

Well i have to say AJ has got me right confused......or maybe her connections have!!!
All this campaigning in Mares races and more recently 3m races, she now goes and does that over 2m.
She has to be a major player in the Churdle for sure......if they run her in the race!!
I hope they do,she would add some much to the build up as well as the actual race.

Report Autocue February 2, 2019 1:57 PM GMT
I'll be really disappointed if they don't run her. It would be another example of dilution spoiling Cheltenham. She jumps a hurdle as quickly as BD.

I'm glad Elliot indicated the Champion Hurdle more likely for AJ, and no doubt connections of BD - he'll get a tow for much further. But what about those of Laurina? She'd have two horses to beat now, and The Mares is for the taking. Would her connections be tempted?

If Laurina is the Mare they hope she is then BD + AJ won't make any difference to whether she runs or not IMO.

Interesting stuff from Mr Henderson......

We managed to beat him at Kempton with a mare of our own in VERDANA BLUE who is very smart on good ground. She’ll struggle to beat him at Cheltenham though when it will be at least good to soft – it won’t be allowed to get any quicker than that. Any softer than that and she won’t run.

There are two factors going into this race. I don’t think he was at his best last year but we know why. He was in a box next to We Have A Dream who on the Monday morning of Cheltenam week had a screaming temperature. They lived absolutely nose-to-nose.

At 6am we got We Have A Dream out of the barn, he hadn’t touched a scrap of his food. Buveur D’Air is as tough as teak and didn’t get over Cheltenham at all last year. We were going back to Aintree, which should have been a piece of cake, but he couldn’t do it.

He wasn’t impressive in the Champion, it took him apart, races don’t affect him at all normally.

He got away with it but it was a bit scrappy. He’s going to have to be better this year because the opposition is better with the obvious threats being Apple’s Jade and Laurina.

Here's hoping he is better!!!

BD was not ridden to win the Supreme. He gave a start to the exceptional Altior and highly regarded Min; either would be a serious contender for this last year, and possibly this too. My only and main concern is Geraghty not taking it up until just before or after the last hurdle; the two mares do not worry mean as much as how he's ridden.

Report impossible123 March 7, 2019 2:42 PM GMT
I do not think AJ could be gifted an easy lead or lead with Global Citizen in the race. Otherwise, Petit Mouchoir or Farclas could step up to assume the role of a pacesetter. If all else fails Espoir D'Allen could step up for the role too; a decent pace assured, I think, and the anticipated good to soft/soft ground will suit too.

The market resembles that of the fighting 5th when Samcro was absurdly made the fav; history repeats itself, I hope.

A step closer for him to making his 1st appearance at the Punchestown Festival; he's been given an entry with the meeting in May instead of April (proximity to Aintree). If showing no ill-effect from Aintree in a fortnight's time, and weather is ok it could be game on against Faugheen, Melon, Supersundae, Samcro, Laurina etc - he needs to redeem his tarnished reputation; Kemboy could also cross sword with Al Boum Photo in the Punchestown Gold Cup.
