With more weight for the irish ?

Report duffy March 18, 2018 11:33 PM GMT
Yep...all they need to do now is win the 3 best racesGrin
Report duffy March 18, 2018 11:37 PM GMT
Perhaps they could have the irish horses stopping after every circuit to show their passports.

Anyone praising WillieLaughneeds to count how many of his chasers hit the deck.
Guessing somewhere between 10 and 20.
Maybe if I am sad enough with some time,i will count them.
Report Ramruma March 19, 2018 5:33 PM GMT

Mullins had 10 fallers (including hurdlers but not counting Sandsend who broke his leg).

Cheers Ram, thats rather a lot,6 chasers and 4 hurdlers.Actually thought it was more chasers to be honest.
Report Ramruma March 19, 2018 5:56 PM GMT
So far as I can see, Mullins had 10 fallers, Elliott and King had 2 each and no-one else had more than one.
Report Autocue March 19, 2018 6:25 PM GMT
Aye but Mullins had about 300 runners.
Report Ramruma March 19, 2018 7:26 PM GMT
Aye but Mullins had about 300 runners.

Mullins had 62 runners which is twice as many as Elliott (32) or Henderson (34) so it is still disproportionate, though we are dealing with small numbers of fallers so luck plays a large part. You'd want to look at whole seasons before drawing conclusions.

Nice bit of deflection lads
The bha sent drug investigators
Into mullins and elliots yard
One week before the festival
Now its over .... its oh dear

Desperate measures needed lads
Cant have the english being shown

I,i suspect, like most Cheltenham fanatics, just just want to see good racing and get some winners.
Personally find all this Brits v Irish in horse racing boring to be honest.
All about watching these lovely animals perform for our benefit.Where they are trained is not really that important as far as i am concerned.

Think you might be better off on the Football Forum.
They like all this tribal stuff.
Report sageform March 20, 2018 8:55 AM GMT
It does have an impact though on British racing as a whole. Don't forget that all of the prize money (that comes from UK punters) going back to Ireland deprives GB owners, trainers and stable staff of potential income. The same is true of Wimbledon, Open Golf etc. in that the gate money and TV rights contribute to prize money but with racing it is the levy on betting from GB punters that largely funds the prize money. Sadly GB trainers are very reluctant to try to get much of it back by competing in Ireland or France although there a few notable exceptions.
Report buddeliea March 20, 2018 12:08 PM GMT
Well that's a fair point and worth discussing Sage.

All this us Irish are better than Brits thanks.
Report wondersobright March 20, 2018 7:54 PM GMT
a lot of bollox has crept in over the last few years and the betsh1te cup is top of the list
GB v ireland "the battle" is about as tedious as the punters v the bookies

I can never understand why UK horses don't run more in Ireland
Report wondersobright March 20, 2018 8:11 PM GMT
more racing over here = easier opportunities
logistically easier as less travelling and (mostly) no need for an overnight stay
typically heavier ground in winter
Report wondersobright March 20, 2018 8:12 PM GMT
use a UK based jockey they wouldn't have the experience of irish courses
use an irish based jockey he won't know your horse
Report irishone March 20, 2018 9:40 PM GMT
agree with sageform, not to mention all the money going home from all the foreign footballers
Report irishone March 20, 2018 9:45 PM GMT
as for a lot of bollox creeping in
lets start with the tribe that gathers in the marquee with the band behind the best mate stand. pi55ed as newts , never see a race , just like the streets of any english city on a saturday night .....

cheltenham once ouzed class .... now its classless
Report wondersobright March 20, 2018 10:19 PM GMT
yes irish, that is the case for most racecourses over here on saturdays
chester, donny, haydock etc you name your course
p1ssed up eejits, at the races but not there for the races
think it was warwick a few weeks ago where there was booing when a long odds on shot in a novice chase got up late to beat a rag who looked like it was going to win
no class at all you are spot on there irish
Report buddeliea March 21, 2018 7:41 AM GMT
Add Sandown to that, and to a lesser extent Kempton.
Just use a day at the races as somewhere different to drink.Doubt most of them see a horse.
Report sageform March 21, 2018 2:18 PM GMT
Big change from when an application for membership of Cheltenham Race Club required 2 current members to endorse your application in writing and there was a 10 year waiting list! About as easy as getting a knighthood in the 1950's.

regarding runners back and forward across the Irish Sea or English Channel, the Irish seem willing to bring horses to Perth or Ayr where the prize money is only 50% of the Irish money these days but English trainers can't be bothered go the other way for £20 grand. When they do they usually do well.
Report wondersobright March 21, 2018 3:25 PM GMT

evidence of this from the last 5 years?
Report wondersobright March 21, 2018 3:27 PM GMT
perth pay expenses to irish runners
not sure about ayr
in any case, its a short journey on the ferry to ayr
for trainers like gordon elliott even his worst horse in training is likely to find a p1ss easy race to win at perth in the summer
Report Autocue March 21, 2018 6:04 PM GMT
That's funny. Perth's a pleasant course without being known for the quality of the horses on show, apart from a few decent types blowing the cobwebs off at the September meeting.

For the people who aren't bothered if British National Hunt racing is thriving or not I would say be careful about becoming complacent because before you know it grade 1 tracks like Kempton can become housing estates.
