Gigginstown runners in the Martin Pipe (0-145) over the past 4 years:

2017- Champagne Classic WON off 138 - Ran third in  2m4f 'At The Races Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle' (Grade 3) @ Thurles
2016- No Gigginstown Runner
2015- Roi Des Francs THIRD off 139- WON the 3m 'Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle' (Grade 3) @ Clonmel
2014- Don Poli WON off 143 - WON the 3m 'Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle' (Grade 3) @ Clonmel

Working off of the pure assumption that Gigginstown have fared 'Okay' in recent years in the Martin Pipe, I think its probably more than likely that they will aim to campaign their runners in a similar fashion to the ones which have had so much success in the recent past.

2018 Gigginstown Runners in:
2m4f 'At The Races Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle' (Grade 3) @ Thurles:
- Blow By Blow 8/1 (WON)
- Gun Digger 7/2 (Second)

3m 'Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle' (Grade 3) @ Clonmel
- Burren Life 7/2 (Third)
- Monkshood 6/4f (Unplaced)

Gigginstown Entries to the Martin Pipe:
5. Blow By Blow OR144 (11-09)
24. Tell Us More OR140 (11-05)
28. Hardline OR140 (11-05)
29. The Game Changer OR140 (11-05)
32. Dortmund Park OR140 (11-05)
34. Delta Work OR139 (11-04)
36. Monkshood OR139 (11-04)
48. Roaring Bull OR138 (11-03)
74. Burren Life OR136 (11-01)
109. Gun Digger OR132 (10-11)

Blow By Blow is absolutely leaping off of the page at me. A lb higher than Don Poli, same prep race at Champagne Classic (Notably booked with Rachel Blackmore on board). At 25-1 NRNB with the class of this horse and a booking of Rachel Blackmore this could be so very easily be 4 or 5 /1 on the day. I love the fact that its a future chaser because IMO thats what the Martin Pipe is, a race for proper future chasers (Killutagh Vic, Sir Des Champs, Don Poli etc).

Would also be worth noting Monkshood and Burren Life ran in the same race as Roi Des Francs. Burren Life has no chance of getting in at 76, so would be tempted with a saver on Monkshood at 60s on the machine.

Just an angle in I have stumbled across this afternoon :)

Will Rachel qualify for this race ?  I have been looking at the same angle myself and I personally liked the profile of Roaring Bull but he may not make the cut
Report duffy March 5, 2018 5:36 PM GMT
it's going to be running off 144 isn't it

Yes he is running off 144 (11-09)

Have took a chance on Whiskey Sour in this, Willie has targeted it with novices in the past (been Gigginstown novices as the OP pointsd out) so played him nr-nb
Report Can't Catch Me March 5, 2018 5:54 PM GMT
With the defection of Cracking Smart I imagine one of Blow by Blow or Dortmund Park might be rerouted to the AB.

Ive backed four NRNB for this... Early Doors, Delta Work, Dortmund Park and Whiskey Sour. Like pf says, Willie has a great record. My only worry with WS is that the race is usually won by staying chaser types and he doesnt really fit that mould. But he would be a class act in this race.

Have also backed Delta Work for the Pertemps and think he will go most likely go there but want to have him onside wherever he goes..

He’ll go for the Martin Pipe. He won well last time in first-time blinkers and that was probably the first time he’s shown his true form since he won the Grade 1 bumper at Punchestown. I’d say a combination of the less testing ground and blinkers were a help to him. - Gordon Elliott stable tour

Lough Derg Spirit was an eyecatcher for me in the Betfair hurdle and that form has been franked. At 28/1 he'll do for me.

I agree, I've thought looking back that he needs further than 2 miles, he ran well for a long way at Liverpool and stuck at it, he's was under the cosh at Newbury but again stuck on well up the straight. He gets caught out when they quicken up but there won't be any of that today, chance if he can get into that rhythm. Slight concern is that with the ground the way it is, the 2 of the county might have turned it into enough of a stamina test today to compensate.
Report Ibrahima Sonko March 16, 2018 4:27 PM GMT
I really like Carter McKay, dont think they tried on him lto.

Also on No Hassle Hoff as he will love the ground.

Top Class - opinion and write up. Well done sir.

“thats what the Martin Pipe is, a race for proper future chasers (Killutagh Vic, Sir Des Champs, Don Poli etc)”.

With that in mind, and the usual way that Giggs “aim to campaign their runners in a similar fashion to the ones which have had so much success in the recent past”

So, where too from here for BBB iyho ? (After winning his Beginners Chase in Galway yesterday).

Hello all. Back again to bask in this moment of glory.

Basking over. I know Gigginstown have the AP fave in Wide Receiver but he looks well found in the market and tbh doesn't really fit the profile I look for in their MP horse. The one who is leaping off the page at me is actually Ragnar Lodbrok. For vastly the same reasons and race planning which Blow By Blow, Champagne Classic, Roi Des Francs & Don Poli had. I also did a few tweets on it with a little research which I wont regurgitate but is there if anyone want's a read: https://twitter.com/Bailey_Joel/status/1361640012928999424
Report Jb23 February 25, 2021 10:15 AM GMT
Despite not being Gigginstown, Grand Paradis runs today in the rearranged G3 Michael Purcell at Thurles. Awfully nice profile for the race so am happy to settle on the below as my selections for the race

Ragnar Lodbok 20-1 NRNB with Sky
Grand Paradis 20-1 Wills or (16-1 NRNB lads)

Paddy noticeably short on Grand Paradis at 10’s NRNB

Will this be rated 145 or less to get a run GP
Report GAZO February 25, 2021 5:36 PM GMT
the racingpost are not confident he will get in and he wasnt ridden like the martin pipe was the plan
Report duffy February 25, 2021 6:05 PM GMT
Unlikely RL will get in off of his current mark he's only rated 128 in Ireland and even with a bit of help from the English handicapper in pushing him up he is still a bit off.

Only 3 times in the race's existence would he get in that low and 2 of those were in two of the first 3 runnings.

You need to be 135 at least generally.

Conversely Grand paradis looks in real danger of being too high, he's just smashed up a 140 horse by 13 lengths getting just the 2lbs.

Grand Paradis would have been comfortably in without today, I reckon the Elliott horse for this race must be lurking elsewhere.
Report Bentring February 25, 2021 6:20 PM GMT
Thanks for the input was thinking that 140 13L but didn't know how the weights and measures work regarding times etc.
Report duffy February 25, 2021 6:25 PM GMT
The 4th horse a further 20 lengths adrift has a rating of 132 and the winner was pushed out, like Gazo says that doesn't smack of trying to get into the MP.
Report cobra sam February 26, 2021 1:54 PM GMT
st doreaux maybe ...total guess tbh
Report Paterson92 February 26, 2021 11:55 PM GMT
As previously mentioned, Ragnar Lodbrok was also on my radar as he was declared for the Surehaul Mercedes-Benz Novice Hurdle. Unfortunately he was pulled out due to being lame on the morning of the race and given that he probably needs a win to get a high enough mark to get into the Martin Pipe, time is likely to get the better of him.

Frontal Assault was the super-sub in Ragnar Lodbrok’s absence and is now 20/1 for the MP.

The one who fits the profile for me is Torygraph, who would almost certainly get in off a mark of 141 (Elliott entered him at Musselburgh to get a mark). He looks tailor made for the race, however it looks as though he’s going to end up in the Albert Bartlett. If the exchanges are anything to go by, Farouk D’alene could miss the festival altogether and Torygraph looks to be his replacement. He’s also a 20/1 best price for the MP though.

Interesting, cheers mate. I didn't know the Viking warrior was lame on the morning so explains his absence. Agreed that he will likely be too low in the weights now and I have likely a dart too high and too low!

Torygraph certainly an interesting proposition and is probably a worthwhile NRNB incase like you say Ragnar and Farouk don't make it for one reason or another.

hope you're well, long time!

RL been bumped up a whopping 8lbs, although a negative in the context of the woe is me handicapping of the Irish horses, actually gives him every chance now of a run.

There is a mare in this that ran in it last year but is unlikely to go this year. Also in mares hurdle and coral cup. Watched her on her maiden win back at Rosscommon some years ago. Patrick had high hopes for her but well beaten by favourite for mares hurdle Concertista also entered in coral cup. Two and half miles with eleven stone one is right up her street, needs a tight track rather than a gallop, 33\1 each way , might be bigger on here on the day . My Sister Sarah.

Like Cobra Sam I've backed Leoncavallo at 33/1 for this race. He's got a mark of 142 which guarantees a run in a race which David Pipe has tried many times to win.

I'm a little surprised and disappointed to see that he's running over 2m in the Imperial Cup at Sandown tomorrow. I can only presume that the thinking is: if he wins he'll be eligible for the bonus if he then follows up in the Martin Pipe. Either that or the Imperial Cup is a standalone target.

The Martin Pipe is a 0-145 race. If Leoncavallo wins tomorrow he'll still be eligible for the Martin Pipe - even though he'll be running off an effective mark of 147 because of the 5lbs penalty - because his mark when entered was below the 145 maximum.
