can't find anything that stands out yet in which to place a proper wager but am working on it...

although i will say i have been in mystic winds camp in regards the triumph hurdle for quite a while, i just can't bring myself to have a bet until all the jigsaw pieces are in place...looking at some of the lists on here some people are already looking on the back foot to me and is the reason why i like to have an unbiased opinion going into the meeting 

i have one ew yankee for fun but i don't hold out much hope, however i like a stab at one just to see if i can win the shop

Foot and mouth,...there will be no Cheltenham without a doubt. But you do have some good ones which will see you thro' to the end of the Festival.

Cracking price on Movewiththetimes.   Could take some holding off that mark. I'd say connections could target that race aswell considering they went close in it 2 years ago.

Now's the time of year I usually make my opening gambit on the Cheltenham Festival and no different this

Faugheen cost me the chance of a small fortune in the Champion Hurdle with loads of free, accumulated ante-post bets this year, but injured and never turned up. Still trying to make it pay at 5/2 now but the play could have been, just as easily, equally impressive 2/1 Buveur D'Air

Waterlord ran okay for a long way before dropping away tamely. Prompted me to cash out for Cheltenham for small loss and jump ships onto today's winner 42.0 First Flow. Will surely be totally conditions in March but Flow did it very nicely today

Kim Bailey said on ITV straight after the race that First Flow was probably done for the year and wouldn’t be going anywhere near Cheltenham

Oh well, looks like Β£1.25 down the drain!

I have layed Footpad and Apples Jade on the exchange purely because I always lay any Cheltenham horse below 6/4 at this stage. So many things can still go wrong and it is not nrnb so it has paid in most years. The notable exception was when nearly all of Mullins' hotpots won.

Dublin Festival: Which trainer here in their right mind would send any of their serious Cheltenham Festival contender across the water barely 6 weeks before the main event? I certainly would not.

I'd not run Sizing John or UDS either regardless.

Its all about getting winners, British or Irish, dont really matter.....does it?

Why not run Sizing John at Leopardstown?? Last year he ran in and won the Kinloch Brae, Irish Gold Cup, Cheltenham Gold Cup and Punchestown Gold Cup. This year he now seems to be a horse that needs to be fresh?

They say they found zero wrong with him after his run in the Lexus so why not run him at Leopardstown and then you've 6 weeks to get him ready for the Gold Cup, the meeting fits in perfect now.

Last year Sizing John did not have the King George as a target.

I'd not run him in the Dublin Festival (DF) either - the DF is just too close to Cheltenham - given the hard season of last. The atrocious ground he won the John Durkan in despite easily, and together with the hard season of last were probable reasons for his poor Lexus display. He needs a well deserved rest and go to the Cheltenham Festival fresh; he's shown he's the ability with nothing to prove unlike the majority of his protagonists.

The Irish participation for our x'mas Kempton card had been woeful for several seasons now eg no Douvan/Faugheen/Annie Power, and most recently UDS, a no-show to defend his Tingle Creek crown; the Cotswold is not any better either.

regarding uds he has spent plenty of time racing in the uk,the weekend his missed the tingle creek he ran at cork his owners local track the poor weather for horses crossing the sea may well have been a factor also,i am afraid using uds as an example does not stand up.

The only reasons I can see for the Irish to send horses to Kempton at Christmas is if the ground is going to be radically different in favour of a particular animal or if they think a race is significantly weaker than the one they would be contesting at home.It's not as if there's a battalion of UK horses travelling to Leopardstown over Christmas (well done Simply Ned though!)

Lets face it,most of the time during the season, the Irish stay at home,and so do the Brits.
Its only Cheltenham that differs from that, and that is obviously cos its Cheltenham, where the races everyone wants to win are held.
Maybe at times during the season more Irish horses travel than Brits,but maybe that is because the Irish have more quality horses? Gigginstown certainly and also Ricci have improved the quality....and quantity!!

Maybe in time this Dublin Festival will attract more Brits, but personally I think unless we get more quality horses, I don't see it happening.

Trainers are not willing to take risks before Cheltenham. After that they will be scrambling to run at Aintree, Punchestown, Auteuil etc. but they are terrified of putting any pressure on their Festival hopefuls before March. We had a period when Doumen sent quite a few from France but that has also stopped. Like weekend racing as opposed to midweek, I think owners are a part of this. They want their horses running when they can attend with their families.

All in all, I think it has to be accepted that this new innovation is a good thing for the Irish, but not  seen as a good thing for the Brits.
It will still be good racing though, and I am looking forward to it anyway.

its great for national hunt racing and with the prize money on offer then surely it will be great for owners with uk trained horses especially those who like a bit of cut in the ground.

a racecourse in early feb puts on fantastic prize money with 7 grade ones and 3 grade twos yet people from throughout racing find reasons to complain no wonder the game is in a state far to much negativity.

Agreed Foxy. 6 weeks is a lifetime in racing. There's 6 weeks between Cheltenham and Punchestown, and in between you've got Aintree, Fairyhouse, Ayr and Sandown. There will be plenty of horses who will run 3 times in that period and thrive.On the flat there's 6 weeks between Irish Champions weekend and Champions day in Newmarket with the Arc weekend in between and plenty will run in all 3.

Using the excuse that the Dublin Festival is too close to Cheltenham is pure barking nonsense.The vast majority of Cheltenham-bound horses will run at least once between Leopardstown and Cheltenham.

So if that's barking nonsense.....what do you think the reason is?

Lack of ambition among the top British jumps trainers. They complain non-stop about the prize money situation but don't walk the walk.

But seems to me their ambition is Cheltenham winners,be all and end all these days, aint it?

Maybe someone like Matt Chapman should raise this with our top trainers, could be an interesting discussion.

If you look at the AP betting for the non-handicaps at Cheltenham you'll see that over 80% of the leading fancies are Irish. You could argue that there are easier pickings in England, albeit with less prize money. But as we all know now the ONLY thing that seems to matter anymore is having a winner at Cheltenham. I mean you watch ATR in October and after a decent maiden hurdle the presenter starts mentioning the Supreme or whatever. It has become farcical. 

Just hope we get some decent size fields now for the Dublin Festival. Have a feeling there are going to be a bunch of odds-on shots.

I think the handicaps will have big fields the bumpers good fields the grade ones small but quality hopefully the weather doesn’t spoil it.

It is mainly about what is involved for a horse with Cheltenham aspirations. 1. travelling. I know Irish horses do it more than English ones but it is still stressful and could easily involve delays and cancellations with the bad weather recently.
2. Going is almost certain to be bottomless although that should not stop them entering in case.
3. If the horse runs poorly the owners hopes and plans for Cheltenham will be in tatters and you will be very unpopular! On the other hand if you win Euro 80k you might be quite popular.

I believe the Dublin Festival is just too close to Cheltenham. Just two months ago there was the x'mas trials, and this weekend the Cotswold Chase and Cleeve Hurdle - two important Cheltenham trials. What is the point of risking a prime Cheltenham winner just 6 weeks to the main event? They could easily pick-up/aggravate an old injury/over exert themselves.

Post Cheltenham there is Aintree to consider follow by The Punchestown Festival - are these not enough?

thankfully Phillip Hobbs doesn’t take that approach it looks like Defi du soil is going to run in the Irish champion hurdle.a race the English haven’t won since Collier Bay.

Impossible 123 you can never have enough good National hunt racing just look at some of the nonsense we have had so far this season I know the ground hasn’t helped but the quality has been average at best.

The Dublin Festival is not made up of Cheltenham trials, they are 7 proper Grade 1s in their own right.

I could almost guarantee that the weekend will also throw up loads of Cheltenham festival winners.

I would imagine JP knows DDS cannot beat BD at Cheltenham,so as Sage says take a punt and go for it in Ireland.

At the end of the day, Cheltenham is just too important to the british owners and trainers.
Travelling over to Ireland having potentially tough races is not what they want for their horses,and i can understand that.
Although have to say, personally i would love to see our big CH and GC horses going over there.
It just aint gonna happen though.......as said before, just accept it.

Well thats nothing new,the Irish races normally provide Cheltenham winners,they have more quality horses than the brits.

I am old enough to remember when the north of England ruled the national hunt world allowingng the Irish the odd winner mainly in the supreme novice and the stayers hurdle galmoy who has a race named after him tomorrow winning the race twice.

Well its all gradually changed over the years,and now with the 0'learys,Ricci and JP the Irish have the better horses,with exceptions of course. Although JP does share his horses around with the brits.
Gigginstown and Ricci have made a huge difference.

This must be early eighties time.I was a big fan of Gaye Chance,he won the stayers as well,i think 1984? and went on to be a fair chaser,saw him when runner up in the Hennessey to Brown Chamberlain.

84 was Gaye chance trapper John 90 pretty sure he ran in the coral cup the day after.

To be honest I am pissed of they are calling Thursday Ryanair day I realise to those who care about the festival it will still be stayers hurdle day just the same as it was never world hurdle day.,from a racing point of view I think over the last 40 years the race has more great stories and performances than any other race at the meeting.

Yeh,Trapper John also staying hurdler.

When Gave Chance won the race it was held on the Tuesday.

Yes it was the day Dawn run beat coma in the champion hurdle but bigger than that it was a great English Irish match up in the Arkle between bobsline and body’s Ryder I have a picture in the house as they jump the last it’s just like a mirror image,sadly body’s Ryder was killed at Exeter 8 months later.

Twelve months later Bobsline tipped up coming down the hill as both he and Badsworth Boy were cruising in first gear .....he wasn't the same horse after this fall.

thats right sixtwosix bobsline odds on that day i recall.

he won late on in his career at killarney.

Don't remind me of Dawn Run and Cima. I was in the Jim Old camp and Dawn Run getting 7lb (first year that mares got an allowance) beat Cima half a length. Cost us all a lot of money.

Did mole board spend some time with Jim Old sageform ?

A lot of time and he was contemporary with Collier Bay. He started life with Owen O'Neill and fell when going like the winner in the Supreme. Wally Sturt bought him and he won a lot of races for them. He was favourite to beat Collier Bay when giving him nearly a stone in a trial at Sandown but CB won easily and was unbeaten that season including the Irish and Cheltenham Champion Hurdles.

sorry for the late reply sageform,regarding mole board when with owen oneill i was lucky enough to be involved in a nice touch when he had two winners at the early january meeting at cheltenham {pretty sure it was then }mole board was one i cant remember the other one hopefully you can,not sure who mole board was with when he was subject of a huge gamble on the morning of the sun alliance hurdle where he ran well to finish 3rd or 4th,if memory serves me right i think he landed either in front or almost in front at the last hurdle in 5 cheltenham festivals without ever winning.

It could have been the Sun Alliance, I thought it was the Supreme. Mole Board was either favourite or close to it and I remember backing both him and a horse trained by David Elsworth who was also well backed. Just as Mole Board started to get swallowed up going to the last, the Elsworth horse came there cruising only to fall. I don't remember Mole Board running beyond 2 miles when with Jim. His last hurrah was back at Sandown when he won at 33/1.

it was the agfa hurdle he won at 33/1 with old champion hurdle horses ruling and morley street behind ,he did race on for a couple more seasons after that including a win at ascot where he beat absaloms lady,i still have all the sporting lifes from the 80/90s i will try a find the elsworth horse you were thinking about.

mole boards final run was at the april meeting over 2m4f ridden by mick fitzgerald

mole board also ran in a stayers hurdle in fact one of the all time great races at the festival sadly a duel that rarely gets a mention cyborgo and mysilv at each other for the best part of 1/2 mile mysilv going down by 3/4 length a remarkable performance as she had finished 6th in the champion hurdle 2 days earlier.

Thanks, your SL's are much more reliable than my memory. I think the Elsie horse was killed in that fall but I will await your research. I made a fool of myself in the Chepstow Tote Credit office watching Mole Board win at Sandown at 33/1 and yelling too loudly from the second last. I think I had Β£5 on so well worth a sore throat. The Cyborgo/Mysilv was another bad headache for me as I had backed Mysilv who as you say had finished sixth to Collier Bay in the CH.
