I keep hearing on here that a certain price is a great Each Way bet.  They say should run into a place at 8/1 so it's 2/1 to be placed etc.  No it is not 2/1 to be placed unless it wins.

Is it me being a bit touchy, but unless you think a horse can win then people are kidding themselves.

Example 8/1 with £10 EW returns £30 if the horse is placed for £20 invested.  That's a 1/2 shot you're backing in my book, if you don't believe it will win. 12/1 = Evens.  16/1 = 6/4. 20/1= 2/1.   These prices are if you're getting 1/4 odds also not a 1/5.

If you believe the horse can win the race then EW is fine as the place part is a bit of insurance, but simply backing it because you think it might place is NUTS.  Surely back it on the place market on here and not lose your win stake is the way to go. Yes you may miss an odd winner, but so be it if you didn't think it could win anyway.

Just wanted to put this down as I don't believe some folk have really thought about it.

Apologies to all that this doesn't concern and would be interested if you disagree.

Got to agree m8 drives me up the wall,I always split my stake 30/70 win/place,

good point, if you're not sure even in the slightest that your horse has a winning chance then just place win only bet.

*place only

Totally agree with this. Something well worth bringing up and never is it more pertinent than it is for this particular festival. Looking likely it will be a useful tool to have on your side especially for the first day and it's the road I'll be looking to head down for a few of the G1's across the week.

Agreed. There is a prolific poster on here who seems to back threequarters of the field each way against these shorties and claims that he's a winner regardless of what happens - it's never added up to me, but each to their own etc etc

Always bet 20/10 30/10 etc;not because I'm betting to place just insurance cause I fancy 1 and like to have more on the win part have often done 40/10 just to save stake and say if done 30/20 wud have dbld money But never change these kinda

Bets are usually in the  h'caps

Must say I like backing horse from around 1.8 to whatever to place usually 2.5 and do 80-90% place and the other 10-20 to win as a bonus basically

I do back each way ante post  in 4 or more races  usually at the festivals ,do I expect the horses to win ? no ,but it could happen one day and you want to make it count  ! but the chances of them all placing is more of a reality and has happened a few times and depending on the prices of course  its suprising how much the place part of the acca  adds up to

Some people are confusing e/w with place betting. Place betting is a different thing.

Agree with foyles,

Every antepost bet i place is each way, unless the odds are under 4 or 5/1 with the exception of a potential filth, then each way bets are placed on anything 2/1 and above at 1/5th! If 2 or more are backed and its filthy, the place part on here is miles below what bookies offer so a nice lay of the place part of your bet on each is always the way to go. Very rarely these days both or all front of markets in filthy e.way races place and occasionally none do, when the short price fav is beat, its beat by one of these and so copping the win part and gaining profit on the place. I can't be bothered to type out on here the method of why it works or how, it just does.

Also e/way antepost or otherwise on normal (competitive) races is always good, as the place returns on these horses always adds up to a nicer payday in addition to the winner Cool

An each way bet are in effect two separate bets. So 8/1 (quarter odds) each way is one bet at 8/1 to win and another bet at 2/1 a place. Whether it's worthwhile really depends on the race and your view on the win/place chances.
Not rocket science.
Report jasey February 5, 2016 7:51 PM GMT
It ain't a 2/1 bet tho it's a 1/2 shot and they ain't separate bets because you can only have the same place stake as the win and are written as 1 bet..

If it's a 1/2 shot how come you get paid out £12 and not £10.50 when it wins Confused
Report shockster February 5, 2016 7:58 PM GMT
Exactley Jasey.  It's only a 2/1 bet if the horse wins. That was my point and I reckon many never realise it. Most on here will but obviously not all.

If it's making people think it was worth posting.  Nothing wrong with Each Way if you use it correctly.
