"and had excuses this year where Faugheen went no pace"This is a myth. It was the 7th fastest time in the last 25 years, and it was ran on good/soft ground. If you take out the faster 6 times which didn't had soft in their description its actually the fastest overall time. It wasn't a "no pace" under any way someone objective views it. Could it have been run faster? Yes. Would that have helped TNO? I'm not sure. Would it have helped Faugheen? Absolutely yes based on his Christmas Hurdle run.
Here are my hurdle-to-hurdle sectionals from Cheltenham this year. Supreme Novices on the left, Champion Hurdle on the right. Between hurdle 1 and the third last, the Supreme Novices was run 4.7 seconds faster than the Champion Hurdle. I'll say it again, they went no pace in the Champion Hurdle and Faugheen stacked them all up.
41.61 44.11
43.36 45.23
24.06 24.39
20.23 20.84
36.66 36.05
15.94 14.96
25.96 25.38
13.82 13.79
FWIW, I actually agree that a stronger pace would have helped Faugheen too. IMO he didn't run up to his best at Cheltenham, but then he didn't need to as The New One and Jezki both ran flat. It's just a question of who's stronger in a finish, and The New One really scraps.
