Waiting for better ground is the reason.

No Double Ross either???

That changes the complexion of the race as the PACE horse has gone. Not sure who'll take them along.

Had a saver on Black Thunder to back my Theatre Guide play... 8.6 seems fair... plenty of blue on Oddschecker... only the 6 line up but should be a cracking race with a case to be made for each of the contenders...

^^^^ think you,ll get bigger tomoz on the high st imo

Maybe, but off to footy early tomorrow... will watch the race in the books and maybe go in again on BT if it drifts...

No chance BT drifts now tomorrow, small field and it has been price wised at 9/1 billys 9am shops and korals 8:30am shops.

we have last years winner and gold cup placed, the Ryanair winner and KG second, the Hennessey winner, add into the mix SP getting weight RSA 2nd.

BLACK THUNDER SMAD PLACE RFC

Hopefully Dynaste wins this on way to Gold Cup.
By:
I think Dynaste is very short with stamina to prove.
His three wins over 3m+ have been at Kempton, Haydock & Aintree. Different task today. |

94 posts in and Many Clouds hardly gets a mention.
I have TG at 25 ap first 3 but i will backing Many Clouds today, any sort of improvement makes him a clear winner. |

Well if he is a Gold Cup player he needs to win this.
By:
I've backed Dynaste. I think people are thinking too much of grands crus in terms of trip. Grands Crus never showed any staying power over fences. Dynaste has shown plenty.
i think it's 9/4 will he stay - he's by far the clasiest. gl |
By:
plumped for TGB 7/1 ew in the end.
...and a small reverse forecast TGB and Smad Place. Intriguing race... |

Loving Many Clouds jumping

well done Ibra.
Smad Place....2/11 at the trip now. Should go for the Ryanair. |
By:
Top performance that was from Many Clouds. But bunch finishes, I'd be surprised if he won the Gold Cup on better ground.
By:
well done alleged too
Think you are sort of right about smad place sint, he isnt good enough. |
By:
Have off sint, Smad Place was staying on the best at the finish there ffs. He's just not good enough for this level. He's 11282 at 3m+ over fences.
By:
You're not still suggesting he doesn't stay though are you Sint?
By:
for horse that supposedly stays so well he gets beat a lot in staying races.
By:
There is a difference between not being good enough and not staying though.
How anyone can watch that and suggest he doesn't get 3m is beyond me. |
By:
He gets beat because he is not good enough, not being a non stayer
By:
well done IS, alleged, other winners, MC's a smashing horse and has been well campaigned by an astute trainer.
By:
Christ alive. I state clearly why he might not win before the race, he gets beat on favourabe terms and it's me who cannot see it correctly.
By:
I backed Smad but the best horse in that race won,no complaints.
By:
watching it back, the winner was actually going away a little right at the death...

Delighted with that performance from Many Clouds. Puts him right in the mix for Cheltenham. Quite happy with my 40/1 voucher too :P

Christ alive. I state clearly why he might not win before the race, he gets beat on favourabe terms and it's me who cannot see it correctly. Yes it is sint. You are simply saying he doesn't stay and should go for the Ryanair. We're saying he isn't good enough for this level, going for the Ryanair would result in a heavier defeat. He clearly stays, it was 3m1f on soft ground and all 3 of the horses today kept on galloping. I find it very very hard to believe anyone could say the horse doesn't stay. |

Well done Ibra and alleged

you can turn the stat around the other way and say SP has only three times been out of the places in 11 attempts at 3 miles
same sire as Nacarat who won a Grade 1,Grade 2 and Grade 3 race at 3 miles plus but never ran in the Gold Cup. Depends how you define a non stayer I suppose, pejorative term - I would n't describe Smad Place as a non stayer if the definition of a stayer is a horse that's effective at 3 miles plus but I don't think he'll be winning the Gold Cup after today either. Many Clouds might... |

Not much more to add to be honest, except I do think he will be better in March and i still hope hes a live outsider for the Gold Cup,but it does look like hes just below whats required. |
By:
You can't say Smad isnt good enough with his record. Is TGB not good enough with 3 Gold Cup placings. Might not be the best but good enough to compete and worth their place.
By:
My view was that the horse wouldn't stay and I stick to that view. Neither he nor Dynaste stay that distance well enough to win at that level in my view and that level is a notch below gold cup standard. Many Clouds was saving a bit for himself today but never looked like being overhauled despite the fact that they went no pace for most of the race. An extra furlong run at a searching gallop? Not for me with either Smad or Dynaste. I don't know if it is worth seeing if a strongly run Ryanair would suit. He may just be a horse who falls between two stools distance wise. It may also be the case that at the highest level he often spends too long in the air at his fences or he just isn't that good a horse compared to the best.
By:
As for TGB his one true asset is his ability to stay on in a race like The Gold Cup. Todays race was far too slowly run to bring his stamina into play.
By:
I said earlier in this that I think Smad is a "nearly" horse, and this only makes me think of it more.
Without doubt he stays the trip, but at the highest level, I'm just not sure if he is quite good enough. Reaseheath's Nacarat comparison is an excellent one. To me, he's a bit like Overturn. He is a very good animal, tries his heart out, runs with credit, but, he has a habit of always running into one that just a little bit better on the day. Not tearing up my AP voucher for the Gold Cup, but I fail to see how he could turn the form round with Many Clouds after that. Smad has place claims definitely though. |
