It was only a 4 runner race, but in affect 2, cos it was a match.
Surely the best Gold Cup was maybe Dawn Run.s epic win in 1986 ?
Or 1983 when Michael Dickinson had all his 5 horses finished in the 1st 5 ??
Or Best Mate £ L'Escargot winning 3 consecutive Gold Cups
But for me my fav Gold Cup was in 1989 when Dessie won !!

Arkle V Mill House ??? Too much hype !!

Stew - there are a couple of reasons why the number of runners was so small.  Firstly, given that there were no chasers (at that time)within 2 stone of these two, it was hardly worth running.

Of course these days with good place money down to sixth, it would be worth running, but in those days festival prize money was pretty low - the Gold Cup prize money was less than the Whitbread, about the same as the Schweppes Hurdle and about a third of that of the Grand National.

Re the comments on the "greatest", all subjective of course, but remember this was a match between a chaser almost universally regarded in England as unbeatable vs a horse the Irish felt was the best they'd ever seen.   Haven't been too many Gold Cups like thatWink

If I could go back in time and be at cheltenham for 1 gold cup then it would have to be the Arkle v Mill House one. Would have been amazing to be around at that time and see a great horse like Mill House and then an even greater one come along to beat him.
