This might be a stupid question but does this go on ? Say Hurricane Fly, Annie Power, Un De Sceaux, Faugheen, Briar Hill etc all ran in race conditions behind closed doors (empty racecourse) say over 2m to find out who is the best or what the pecking order is?

It used to, decades ago. I'd be surprised if any leading stable does it now.

Would make sense if you were a trainer with some good yardsticks and want to see if something well handicapped. But a proper race against each other would take something out of a horse and Mullins for example can mop up races to see how good they are against other yards.

apparently was the downside of inviting Lester to come and ride work. Would probably only have been interested in showing up at 7 in the morning unless he was going to ride the ears off it.....
