Just started to look back at previous Cheltenham's as I do at this time of year. Just seen The Thinker beating Cybrandian and was thinking
Is Wayward Lad the first horse that we remember not getting home in the Gold Cup ie One Man and Florifa Pearl?
And why was Malton and the North so dominant in those days?

Couple of reasons spring to mind. Gordon Richards and WA Stephenson were horse people through and through, knew the game inside out. Had big spending backers like the Edinburgh Woolen Mill mob, Peter Deel etc, always bought quality NH bred stock. It all pretty much died out when the flat bred became more popular and the introduction of French horses. Just a change of breeding habits really.

Ps, a few more never came up the hill in the GC for the big southern rads aswell.
