Started going in 2011 and have been back ever since. Hooked!! Couldnt imagine being anywhere else come the second week in March each year. Came back from Oz in 2012 for it and this year will be coming from Canada. Luckily it coincides with a buddy's wedding a week later so that's my excuse when people ask me why Im home. To be honest wedding or no wedding Id be coming home for it!! Myself and another friend have been going every year since 2011 with different people joining us each year! This year theres 11 of us heading with 5 of them first timers so id imagine a few more will be hooked come the end of the week! Same routine for us every year. Dublin to Birmingham. Taxi to Cheltenham. Get settled into the house. We usually stay in the monday night then full steam ahead for the week. Up early, breakfast, out to the track, hot whiskeys before racing starts (no drinking during racing) then pints til the early hours then home and do it all over the next day. Its a marathon week which requires another week recovery but I wouldn't change it for the world. Theres no better feeling than backing a winner there roaring it home then applauding it into the winners enclosure with people you know all your life as well as with strangers youve just laid eyes on and may never see again! Hope anyone going this year is lucky and enjoys their week immensely. For anyone reading this who hasnt been, get there before you die. Having a knowledge of racing helps but is not essential! Its a great social week as well as a racing event!Roll on March 11th!
Who do you get the taxi with from Birmingham airport to Cheltenham? Anyone got a reasonable taxi rate for doing Birm Airport-Chelt return for the Tuesday?

Dread the feeling on Friday night of The Festival.
best week of the year, no doubt and similar to another comment above as soon as new year is out the way I start to focus on the festival, ante-post bets, getting my kitty together etc. But come the Friday night I'm glad it's over for another year, my liver is on its last legs, I can't look at form for a race until at least aintree, the week is ultra enjoyable but takes its toll.!!!

it makes youre life so much better than.heres why.1)whilst the rest of the country are all having xmas blues,a dry jan,a failed diet/gym membership,we are all busy study, planning, buzzing.so it gets you from winter to spring.2)its a safe excuse to have a few days from wife/family(i.e no birds involved, well thats what they think),its a feckless blow out,a bit of me time.3)its top class sport, full of drama,fun,passion.4)the build up is very long, also so is the meeting5)but the best thing is when you ve had a bad day or a good day,and after the last race each day,you know you got another chance to do it all over again, its the gift that keeps on giving.6)football has the same passion, but youre team plays twice a week, this is once a year so its so much more exciting.in conclusion youre lifes so much more fulfilling if you get into cheltenham.i ve been since 1985 every year- every day bar 2days (mums funeral, lack of money for all 3days ,so went 2 one year- that didnt happen again).ive slept in a car 7 years 85-92 ,cheltenham swimming baths car park ,shower in morning,i still rekon this is the best way to do it.then hotels in chelt ,then gloucester, then rented houses, then ross on wye.worcester last few years.i lost every year for first 15 years, then ive won 12 out of last 15,last 8 not lost.biggest loss 1k biggest win 6k.(needed campeador for 22k last year,it fell at last going best.my best tip to anyone - take twice as much money as you are prepared to loose, make sure you survive the tuesday at least even ,dont try and win big first day, budget the next 3 days ,only increase bets in had winners.if you loose the lot you ve still got the same amount to go home with cos you took twice the money you were prepared to loose,e.g if you take 2k and loose 1k its nice going home with 1k even though you were never going to risk it.for first 15 years i went home skint, couldnt even afford a macdonalds on way home.back 2 in each race, one main another a saver.last 3 years ive had 12,8 and 10 winners and none of them were the mullins shorties.it gets easier with experience.
Comingupthehill, great post!! I realise you posted this over a year ago but the thread has been bumped, a question if I may, you said " no birds involved, well that's what they think " then that you slept in car from 85-92 ( that's dedication some years Cheltenham is Baltic) I'm assuming that 85-92 were lean years with the birds, I can't imagine many wanting to go back to your pad in the car park of Cheltenham swimming baths!!
