Pedrobob - County Hurdle

Oscar Delta - Foxhunters

One Man, Istabraq, Viking Flagship, the Kauto / Denman / Long Run Gold Cup race from a couple of years back where everything 'went right' for the spectator, if not (all) the punters.

...oh and Master Minded's first Champion Chase win
Report Roger The Butler February 18, 2014 4:02 PM GMT
Had a monster treble in in 2003 placed in December 2002 in the on-course Coral shop at Sandown Park on Tingle Creek Day - Azertyuiop at 6/1 (sp 5/4), Baracouda at 6/4 (went off 9/4 - ouch) and Best Mate at 3/1 (sp 13/8). Was in tears well before Best Mate jumped the last and gave me the deposit for my first house.

Have tried every year since always ending in failure until 2013, when a November accumulator starting with Sizing Europe and Hurricane Fly that week rolled on to Simonsig (3/1), Quevega (11/10) and Sprinter Sacre (Evs) winning me just over twice what I won in 2003.

Roll on 2023.

What have you done this year Roger?

A few years back I had Chief Dan George (33/1), A New Story (33/1), Cue Card (40/1), Buena Vista (20/1), Alberta's Run (16/1), Thousand Stars (16/1), Imperial Commander (14/1) and Pigeon Island (40/1) as winners in the same festival.

Beat that for aftertiming. Most of them were put on in the same Will Hill on Dale Street in Liverpool. By the time of the Grand Annual the guy behind the til was just scratching his head and laughing.

Horses loved there are far too many to mention but the commentary when it was stated there "was a cowboy riding into town" (Rhinestone cowboy) was utterly brilliant and a hairs on the neck job.

Worst memory was backing latalomne for two consecutive years in queen mother was tanking both times when coming to grief at the 3rd last both times. best win was not the most ive won but it felt the best if that makes sense,it was the Wednesday of the 2006 I had a couple of quid on hairy molly in bumper at over 200s on betfair ante post and a 2.5 ew double on hairy molly at 33s and mr mcgoldrick placed at 66s.The reason for it being my best win was molly was my late mums name and mr mcgold was a horse my dad always use to back before he passed away in jan 2006.My bruv in law still swears to this day when hairy molly hit the front in the bumper all the lights flickered in the boozer !!!. maybe devine intervention.

Rooster Booster to win the Champion Hurdle at 40/1 was handy.

The double with Truckers Tavern at 25/1 would have been even handier but some ropey old nag called Best Mate scuppered that one!

RB was 40/1 in the October before won his first race of the season at Kempton, his price dropped a lot after he then won the Greatwood easily.

I've no need to bullsh1t either when I'm offering one winner at 40's in the last 20 years and one loser!

Bostons angel at 21/1 on betfair each way in the RSA. Was my first ever trip to the festival and having backed Al Ferof, HF and Quevega I remember texting my now wife at the start of wed that all I wanted to do for the day was not to lose what I'd won the day before. Had £60 on each way and was possibly the only person shouting in the stand as it went over the last - it felt that way anyway!!  Lost my voice that day

id been fishing this venue on and off for quite a while, it was a very cold January and the lake froze over, the owner bought us all breakfast as the lake was unfishable, as a good will gesture he said my dad has a horse that will be running at the Cheltenham festival, back him and come back and tell me when its won. we also got a free session at a future date.

the horse in question is noland, it payed for many fishing trips, season tickets, holidays, happy days Happy

Racing Demon veering right after the last in the Neptune (Royal Sun Alliance back then) to be beaten 3/4 length cost me a fortune in singles and an eachway double with Inglis Drever winning his first WH. Sickening experience to lose in that manner.

Thursday 2010, EW Trixie Copper Bleu, Albertas Run and Faasel. Still a nice payer, but if Faasel has obliged..... Daft thing was I only backed one other horse that day, but didn't stick it in any multiple - Buena Vista who won at 16s. I made up for a portion of that when I lumped on again the following year, good old BV.

I stopped going on the Friday years ago and so was in a small indie bookies when Long Run won the Gold Cup. I had him in a chunky double with Baby Run in the next and as that one cruised through the race the poor bookie was getting himself in a muck sweat. He actually roared with delight when that pillock Willie jumped off Cry

Most proud of winning a 537 pound placepot twice, not bad for an outlay of 4 quid I reckon.... the last leg was Character Building at 16/1 (which won) however because the placepot was running I didn't back it seperately, just sat there cacking myself because I could see it would be a big pool.

Pedrobob was sweet as he was the only winner I backed that week and was the biggest get out of jail bet I ever did lol. Anzum was the most exciting.

Quite like Tizzard at Cheltenham and backed that Golden Chieften thing last year and Oiseaeu de Nuit but the one that got away was Cue Card in the bumper..... I was going to back it all day right up to getting to the tote window then for reasons known only to God himself I went for some other beast. I wonder what ever came of that donkeyLaugh. The Tote paid 61.60 on that fella.Cry

Best win was Silver Jaro at 66/1 on course, and Pigeon Island on here for small amount at 200

Few near misses but they always get forgotten. Lyreen Legend was the one that got away for me last year, as was Time For Rupert at 300 in the World Hurdle the year he was second to Big Bucks. I did lay out just before the last for some decent profit though. I also had Tidal Bay at similar prices that year so could have been so much better

I also remember just as I was getting into racing back around the turn of the century I placed €/£ 1 (or whatever it was at the time)placepot on gold cup day 2000 with a coupon from the mirror newspaper, it copped for a little over 400(still remember the horses to this day and will never forget Majadou scrapping home from stablemate Tresor De Mai for 3rd by half a length) and i was hooked! Havent got next to near getting another up since!!!!

What have you done this year Roger?

Have two this year, both already looking very much in trouble:

Champagne Fever (4/1)
At Fishers Cross (4/1 - did well there, shortly after went out to 16s after poor showings at Newbury and Ascot)
(Double)

Champagne Fever (4/1)
Sprinter Sacre (2/5 - always nice to get a shorter price about a 4/5 shot that probably won't even run)
King's Palace (9/2)
(Treble)

Have resigned myself that after last year I deserve several years of disasters so am not surprised these are not really working out. Last year I kept looking every day at the Simonsig, Quevega and Sprinter Sacre races and just couldn't see, bar a fall, how I wasn't going to collect. They all looked like certainties. Biggest scare was Big Buck's coming out of the World Hurdle as I was 100% convinced Mullins would take Quevega out of the Mares' race for that and screw me over. Felt totally sick that night as I knew the bet was probably in if they all lined up and I could lose out on a harsh turn of events. Some very anxious days waiting for news that Quevega was still aiming for the Mares race - and some anxious days after that waiting to see if Mullins was going to change his mind. If she was mine I'd have switched her, so thank goodness they didn't show the ambition they should have done.

Best winner was a couple of years ago when Betfred put up 66-1 Son of Flicka the day before, he'd shown very little since the year before, but had raced on softish ground all year, and, as a result, his handicap mark had shot down.

Nearest miss was the year of 1993, the Bookmakers pushed Royal Derbi out to 100-1 in what was a right awful Champion Hurdle, turning around the final bend it was cantering, with only that rogue of a thing called Granville again to beat, and yes,, that was the day he decided to put it all in, dont think it ever won a race after thatLaugh
