They restrict fairly quickly but they do have the most interesting specials and were the most competitive shop based bookie for quite a while. Obviously they were a gamechanger for all the others.

Yeah, you're probably right. Mullins hotpots on day one probably does look good to most punters.
Report Can't Catch Me February 18, 2014 9:02 PM GMT
I placed the same bet last week anyway. The fact they have out it out as a special is obviously a negative, but sticking with it,
Report dj876 February 18, 2014 9:28 PM GMT
Which race will they refund all losing bets if the banker wins on day 1? I think some of the previous ones have been the following

Cousin Vinny
Dunguib
Cue Card
Hurricane Fly

Will they stick with the FLY or maybe Vatour?
Report Can't Catch Me February 18, 2014 9:42 PM GMT
I reckon CF.
Report dj876 February 18, 2014 9:56 PM GMT
Yeah maybe ,what do you think is their primary motivation is for picking the race? They normally shorten the prices on the other contenders and make it as difficult as possible to lock in free money.
a)Highest profile race to increase exposure
b)A weak favourite: Obviously don't have to refund but doesn't the promotion tend to divert punters to other selections
Report marychain1 February 18, 2014 9:58 PM GMT
Think it was Hurricane Fly was 2 years ago. Wasn't it My Tent or Yours last year? The first year they did it was Sprinter Sacre wasn't it?

Don't think they did Cousin Vinny or Dunguib, but pretty sure they were the inspiration behind the idea. Could be wrong though.

Reckon it

Cousin Vinny was definitely the first one Marychain and ran like a drain,it could well have been MTOY last year
Report marychain1 February 18, 2014 10:01 PM GMT
@dj876 its a great idea - even just as a face value offer they can't lose. They do it first up (definitely first day, but ideally race 1 or 2) and they either get their festival off to a brilliant start and/or they get loads of new accounts and even if they pay out loads they get most of it back over the week AND those people then don't bet with their rivals.
Report dj876 February 18, 2014 10:05 PM GMT
Yes I understand all that Marychain but what am I asking is what do you think is their primary motivation for picking a particular selection? Do you think they generally pick a selection that they're generally against anyway and then they don't have to refund but does this not then diver their punters to other selections in the race?
Report dj876 February 18, 2014 10:06 PM GMT
Divert
Report marychain1 February 18, 2014 10:17 PM GMT
Motivation for picking a selection is something evens as possible + early in the festival as possible. They do so well from new accounts and publicity I don't even think they care whether it wins or loses. They certainly don't care about the position they took before the offer because it dwarves any pre-offer position they may or may not have had.

It will always be something in the Supreme, Arkle or Champion Hurdle, and the fact that it will probably go off shortest of the three races AND be in the first race makes Vautour the perfect pick this year imo.
Report Tory February 19, 2014 7:47 AM GMT
It was HF last year and made winning money on the race easy. Only 3 horses could really win (HF, ROR and Zark) so you smashed HF and then covered ROR and Zark with PP. They were both about 5/1 the week before which gave you a free £250 bet on HF in the knowledge you broke even at worst. The max refund from PP is £100.

In 2011 it was cue card and 2012 it was sprinter Sacre

20/1 The New One and Kings Palace
19/1 Ballycasey and any Mullins Bumper Horse

taken these two
Report Roger The Butler February 20, 2014 2:35 PM GMT
Is the latter good value?

Ballycasey 5/1 with Ladbrokes, which means you have got Mullins to win the bumper at 9/4. Skinny?
Report marychain1 February 20, 2014 2:43 PM GMT
You're right, it's hardly an amazing price. But its only £5 that gives me a bit of interest in two races I haven't had mch of an antepost view in. Wouldn't be putting any serious wedge on these, they're novelty bets really, and to be honest I'm a little surprised I was allowed that much. This is the firm that restriced me to 66p each way on a cycling bet.
Report Ballydoyle February 20, 2014 2:46 PM GMT
Can people actually get a bet on with Paddy Power??
Report Roger The Butler February 20, 2014 4:07 PM GMT
Yes, but not anything worth putting on. Really random stake limits like £7.64 on a 2/1 double. Always check with a couple of other guys in my office who bet peanuts and don't even win and have PP accounts, and they can normally get 5-6 x as much as me on, but still pointless.

I've learnt my lesson now to stay away from multiples at the festival.  You see potenital returns in your betslip and get carried away.  However, I would have liked some of the 24's on the Vautour/Faugheen double, which is only 14's normally.

The only double I've got on is a 200/1 one on Faugheen and Briar Hill, but like every other festival double I've done, probably only one will win.
Report wellchief February 23, 2014 12:16 PM GMT
Been keeping an eye on these last couple of days, and they're hardly setting the pulse racing.

Yesterdays was Faugheen and Annie Power (any race) - 17/1 when it would be about 15's normally
Todays is Vautour and Sire De Grugy - 16/1 when it 13.5/1 normally, so on both, only getting a couple of points.

The link is below for those who are interested, so check that each day, and no need to follow twitter or text to get your bet on

Is this 12am everyday!!
Report wellchief February 23, 2014 2:27 PM GMT
Yeah the offer is on all day, and then a new one the next etc. Ladbrokes price boost is only 15 mins between 1:45 and 2pm each day. Their one today was TDS in the Jewson boosted to 12's. Not one for me.

Their other ones have been really good though. Ballycasey 10's I think, Red Sherlock 10's, Irving 8's. Better than the PP ones but you don't have much time to get on.
Report wellchief February 23, 2014 5:50 PM GMT
This 16/1 on Vautour and Sire De Grugy is still availalbe if anyone is interested, because of the Sprinter drift.

What was only 2pts bigger than a normal double, it is now about 6 points bigger because SDG's price has contracted a lot, but the offer is the same.

Report wellchief February 23, 2014 7:28 PM GMT
Yeah, just checked.  I managed to get the bet on at about 6:30, so they've only taken it down in the last hour or so.  Double is only 10/1 now, so if Vautour wins, I'll be laying the cr@p out of SDG; especially if he goes off around 6/4 like he is now.
Report wellchief February 24, 2014 12:04 PM GMT
Todays one is Sire De Grugy and Conti double @ 15/1
Report wellchief February 25, 2014 4:44 PM GMT
Today's is Irving and Big Bucks at 14/1 - 4 points bigger than if you were to put them on a normal double

Not to bad, especially with concerns about Vautour, and it is not antepost rules, so if one doesn't run, it just goes on the SP of the other one, and if neither run the bet is void.

Might have a little bit.
Report Roger The Butler February 25, 2014 4:49 PM GMT

Report Fallen Angel February 27, 2014 11:09 AM GMT
It is a phenomenal offer. Thought the value was definitely to play the front two in the market. If you assume Irving is around a 4/6 shot first four places, maybe a fair bit shorter it is a great chance of getting your money back.

Report wellchief February 15, 2015 12:52 PM GMT
No probs mate.  Would have liked that myself!

I only did two of these last year I think - The SDG and Vautour one at 16's and the Iriving and Big Bucks one, so won one and lost one.  I'll be keeping my eye out for them, because if they do put up two you like, they do offer a bit of value, as they are usually around 4 or 5 points bigger than the normal double.

I'll be leaving the Don Cossack - New One alone though.
Report Can't Catch Me February 15, 2015 12:55 PM GMT
Definitely. Is there a max stake do you know? I can't remember...
Report wellchief February 15, 2015 1:01 PM GMT
I just put this years one in my bet basket to test it, and I was allowed £11.10, but it probably varies from customer to customer.  If I remember correctly I could get about a tenner on them last year.  Some on here complained about that, but I'd only ever put a tenner on that type of bet anyway.

Just scrolled through their twitter page, and yesterdays one was 24/1 on Annie Power, Conti and Peace & Co.  I'd want at least double that to think of having a go!
Report Can't Catch Me February 15, 2015 1:21 PM GMT

Fair enough I suppose... Can't blame them for limiting the stakes. It's a decent offer and a good bit of fun if you can find one you like.

Report wellchief February 17, 2015 1:26 PM GMT

I like these bets. A fiver a go and a bit of fun.
Report Hussard February 17, 2015 3:31 PM GMT
They try to make out they know  the Mullins targets offer big odds in the other races but try backing one for decent money they won't take it ask you to come back.

Placed a bet last summer on Hunt Cup 2nd ante post waited 20 minutes for it to be accepted and then  firstly tried to pay out at Sp then wanted to take a rule 4. Give them a FOTB licence and get them out of racing. Giving them the £5 or £10  business just encourages them to  build their FOTB empire which is their real aim.
Report Can't Catch Me February 17, 2015 4:12 PM GMT
