I agree with the OP except for the final sentence.

I think it is the other way round and that Mullins's perceived unhelpfulness is because he tries to be open at a time when plans are still fluid. It is clear, for instance, that Champagne Fever and Felix Yonger were being aimed at the Arkle and JLT respectively -- Mullins said as much and you can see where they were entered until the unthinkable happened on Boxing Day and both horses were beaten at their Cheltenham distances.

Too many punters and pundits don't understand fluidity and uncertainty. We see the same on the Flat when Aidan O'Brien says a horse is only 90 per cent, but then he wins anyway, to the chagrin of all those who thought 90 per cent was code for can't possibly win and Joseph will jump off if he ever takes the lead.

Take Un De Sceaux -- it seems clear that a low-key campaign on mainly right-handed tracks was geared to the Punchestown Festival, not Cheltenham. But now that he has proved better than expected (or has he? For all the hype about time and margins, he's only beaten 4 runners this season, and none of those were expected to get anywhere near him) plans might be changed.

No one is asking for his Cheltebham plans but maybe 3 days before the race,he might not mislead.

He could surely not mislead by stating that Boston Bob would run in the Galmoy on Thursday at Gowran but then re-route him to Cheltenham on Saturday.

Is it asking too much to know 3 days prior to the weekend which novice he's going to run in the 2 mile 5f chase on Saturday and which is going to run in the 2 mile chase on Sunday.

I don't have an issue with him not informing the public about which horses run in novice hurdle races at the festival with 6 weeks to go.I do have an issue with him campaigning horses in races that suit his agenda at the festival rather than the race that best suits the horse.

I can't understand how Wylie wouldn't have an issue with the disgraceful placing of felix Yonger at Limerick over Christmas for a 15k pot when horses he had hammered over 2 miles fought out a 50 k pot at Leopardstown?

One entry only per horse would help
After backing CF last year for neptune i steer clear of mullins horses till the day now.

No one is arguing about how good a trainer WPM is.  The issue is when he states where a horse is going and then changes.  E.G On Monday this week Boston Bob was running in the Galmoy Hurdle tomorrow at Gowran.  Entries come out today and he's not running!!!!!  If he was unsure on Monday say so or say nothing.  Countless other instances.

For horses where plans are fluid as you put it, then yes he can't commit, but when decisions are made I see no reason why he can't make it public. Nicholls doesn't appear to have any issues keeping punters up to speed when decisions are made.

Maybe they believed Champagne to be the better horse, and more likely to win the Arkle.
If he stated this to wylie and said your better chance of Zfestival success would be the Jewson then Wylie would understand.
As things materialised plans 'may' change.

Ground conditions and opposition come into calculations when you have such an array of fire power so its easy to understand keeping all options open.

At the start of the season he had at least 6 horses who could contest the novice hurdles at the festival. ( probably more. It's not the sort of race I look at till much nearer the time. Quick step to the Poe house for me)
So why would he say A horse if going supreme. B horse the Neptune and C horse the Bartlett. Until they show themselves and he can juggle things around to meet each horses best options why decide until the latest possible moment.

Mullins annoys the ante-post punters every year. This is not a new thing. Saying one thing and doing the opposite a day later is his forte. I can see why some people get very annoyed with him.

The quality of the Mullins string is unrivalled and he does look very strong in the novice hurdle division especially. I've been burnt before by his public meanderings and this year chose to back some of his in the 'win at the Festival' market with Billy's. As Phil Lynott used to sing 'don't believe a word'!

Walsh will be on duty at Doncaster to ride the exciting Annie Power in a Grade 2 mares' hurdle. The time of that race was brought forward at trainer Willie Mullins' request to allow Walsh to travel to Cheltenham to ride Boston Bob in the Cleeve.

Despite Annie Power's race switching to 2.05 from 2.40, Walsh said on Thursday: "Time-wise it's too tight. I'll just ride Annie Power at Doncaster."
