Where are they?

Supreme
West Wizard 20/1
Stand To Reason 33/1
Vaniteux  33/1
Captain Cutter 33/1
Call The Cops 40/1

Neptune
Captain Cutter  12/1
Beat That 25/1
Clean Sheet  25/1
Vaniteux  25/1
Cocktails At Dawn 33/1
Josses Hill 33/1
Tistory 33/1

AB
Captain Cutter 8/1
Beat That 20/1
West Wizard 25/1
Cup Final 33/1

Other than Captain Cutter, he doesn’t appear to have a decent crop this year, this isn’t usually the case at this time of the season; he always has leading fancies if not favourites for these races.

Are there one or two being underestimated? None of them have raced much and he did have a slow start to the year. Plenty have disappointed like Earth Amber, Mayfair Music and he’s got a few that haven’t been out yet; Act Four, Bringithomeminty, lessons In Milan for example.

I personally thought Stand To Reason, Full Shift & Call The Cops have looked decent.

It just seems a bit odd this year, any thoughts?

I think you make a good point, you would think a few must be underestimated, what pointers would we look for to indicate this though, hmmm.

Stand to Reason 90s on here for Supreme fwiw.
Report buddeliea January 8, 2014 7:52 AM GMT
he don't win the supreme, once as far as I recall(maybe wrong)but not many anyway.
Not many Neptunes either, once?? And 1 Albert Bartlett?

Would not worry about it too much.
Report Arklearkle January 8, 2014 10:49 AM GMT
Tbf he won a Neptune and an Albert Bartlett in the last 2/3 years and he won the Supreme twice when a lot of the other trainers were in short pants. If you dont think thats a good record then check out the other trainers
Report Ballydoyle January 8, 2014 11:33 AM GMT
But has had many "good things" finished placed in Supreme rather than finish 1st
Report buddeliea January 8, 2014 12:22 PM GMT
Hard to say what a good record is I guess, but say hes won 4 novice hurdles in his career spanning what? 40 years maybe??
That would be one every 10 years in probably about 25- 30 races?? As AB is fairly new.
Is that good??

Hes had fistfulls of fancied runners and a lot of them have progressed to be darn good horses out of novice company.
Suggests to me hes a trainer that don't put a gun to their head too young and one to be wary of backing his novice hurdlers at Cheltenham.
Report buddeliea January 8, 2014 12:23 PM GMT
At least to win I should add.

Right got me doing some research this has, so anyone that's interested:

Hendo Started training in 1978.
Since then we have had 34 Supremes - Hendo 2 winners

                       34 Neptune/RSA - Hendo 1 winner

                       9 Albert Bartletts - Hendo 1 winner

                       34 Triumph - Hendo 5 winners

Thought to be fair to Hendo I should include the Triumph as he has a good record In that, and it is a novice race!!
So all in all 111 races - 9 winners.

Make yer own mind up if those figures would have a bearing on whether to back his horses to win a novice hurdle at the festival.
Report Arklearkle January 8, 2014 2:14 PM GMT
I dont necessarily disagree with you Budd but if you looked at all the trainers records that way you would not back anything in those races. Statistically one has a better chance of having the winner by backing either Hendo, PFN or WM.

Poor for this stable imo...but I backed Trabolgan for RSA and he wonGrin. Then there is Simonsig who won NeptuneSad so you sure about this 1 winner or is it 1 winner each??
Report buddeliea January 8, 2014 5:36 PM GMT
i meant RSA in that the Neptune was called the Sun Alliance, so basically the same race.
Sorry for confusing.

Yes Arkle, I dare say other trainers may look similar or worse maybe, but just thought it may interest some as we were on the subject of Hendos nov hurdlers.

Hes certainly had some darn good hprses turned over recently in the nov races: Sprinter Sacre,Spirit Son, MTOY spring to mind, and Darlan got beat by Cinders and Ashes!!
Just think their is a case to think he does look upon their nov year as very much the springboard to the future and maybe hes a bit easier on his than other trainers??

Its just observations, and not having a pop at him at all.

He's def better at winning the champion hurdle than the supreme. Add in binocular which lost SNH
Report Ballydoyle January 8, 2014 6:06 PM GMT
Amaretto Rose also
Report GI MAC January 8, 2014 6:19 PM GMT
He doesn't have the best strike rate in terms of winners, but he's hit the crossbar a few times!

At the start of the season all the talk was about West Wizard and plenty backed him on this hype alone because of who he was trained by.

I'd just be very surprised, come the festival he doesn't have runners who will be competative in these races, and as pointed out there's some big prices on here. Every ones preoccupied with Mullins just now, maybe they are getting overlooked....
