Rather gone under my radar this horse. Didn't realise he won a hot race 3 weeks ago and now off 169!! Higher rating than Simonsig. (and any other novice chaser from last season). Be interesting to see how he develops from here, out tomorrow.

ridiculously rated now, Captain conan beat him cosy first time up last year and is now 10lbs inferiorLaugh
Report Howdi November 17, 2013 12:58 AM GMT
yes it sticks out like a sore thumb doesn't it. Beating champion chaser (albeit on downgrade) has got the handicapper too excited. You like your ratings do you duffy?
Report sintonian November 17, 2013 12:11 PM GMT
Could have improved though. We'll see today  ... back or lay ... back or lay .. Evens.
Report duffy November 17, 2013 12:37 PM GMT
not really howdi, a horse can win a few races and go up and up just by the fact it's won them regardless of what it's beat, that was a good performance at sandown though, but I'd be disappointed if Captain conan isn't superior to SDG full stop regardless of what the handicapper thinks, his opposition today isn't very strong either is it, there's only KC in the field that could still turn out to be better than what we've seen if they ever manage to sort him out and he doesn't suffer any shocks along the way!!
Report Ibrahima Sonko November 17, 2013 1:36 PM GMT
He is such a good jumper, i reckon he will turn out to be the 2nd best 2 mile chaser this season.
Report duffy November 17, 2013 1:50 PM GMT
The problem with having the likes of SS around is top class horses such as cue card who is a top class 2 miler, don't run over the trip apart from a prep run perhaps, personally, whatever happens to cue card this season, for me, he'll be the 2nd best 2 miler around, who'd you fancy in a match over 2 miles, SDG or CC, only one winner for me.
Report Ibrahima Sonko December 7, 2013 3:06 PM GMT
that's much better Love
Report sageform December 7, 2013 5:32 PM GMT
Jamie Moore said this morning that he doesn't seem happy at Cheltenham so they might run elsewhere. On todays evidence he would only have Sprinter Sacre ahead of him if the QM chase was run at Sandown.
Report shockster December 7, 2013 6:29 PM GMT
SS is different class to all of them as we all know.  IMO SDG is number 2 on soft or heavy, but on decent ground he'll get found out and don't think he'd live with Cue Card if they dropped back.
Report sickoflayinwinners December 8, 2013 11:06 PM GMT
sire de grugy didn't jump great last time over the Cheltenham fences but agree he was impressive at sandown, could be placed in the champion chase (even win if something goes wrong with sprinter sacre  in the next 8-10 weeks
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 December 9, 2013 10:48 AM GMT
Totally agree with you sick, had a bit of 16s off laddies for that very reason. With the likely hood of there being a small field again, and with antepost rules it being filthy each way it had to be took!
Report sickoflayinwinners December 9, 2013 8:58 PM GMT
bit surprise the laid you e/w with as ou say it looks a "proper e/w race"
Report alleged22 December 9, 2013 9:11 PM GMT
id expect them to keep him away from Cheltenham and target will be sandown again imo
Report shockster December 9, 2013 9:35 PM GMT
I'll be amazed if they miss Cheltenham as I doubt there'll be more than 6 runners and good prize money to be had.
Report sageform December 10, 2013 5:05 PM GMT
I hope that Sprinter Sacre recovers from his problems and runs at Cheltenham but when a horse keeps dropping out of planned engagements, I am suspicious about their well being. I would not consider a QM ante post on him until he runs.

Bolted in today and SS will have to be close to his best to beat him at Cheltenham.
Report shockster January 19, 2014 11:51 AM GMT
SDG was brilliant yesterday and I really  believe he is top class on soft ground or worse.  However, even if Sprinter is absent at Cheltenham would you want to back him at short odds on a course where he has not won before and been beaten twice. Aintree he's been beaten all 3 times he's been there.  I reckon it's all down to good ground even though 1 defeat at Chelt was on official soft.  I would be really wary of him at Cheltenham, but wish him well.
Report paulo47 January 19, 2014 8:47 PM GMT
When he beat Empire Levant over hurdles at Kempton ,though only officialy g/s  everybody was concerned about the soft ground for later pm , Jamie , when asked how the ground was replied .....' not soft enuff '. It also seems from his comments before the Scilly Isles that the horse is much better with a target to aim at , whether thats another way of saying held up am not sure . You would also think , like Captain Chris in reverse , he would be pounds better the right way round .

Why continue to go on and on about a fooken horse that is not there, really makes my blood boil!!!

Clearly there must be something up with CC but he was 100% fit at the start of the race, something i have always believed as there are vets at the start of every race etc etc. It just was not to be as simple as that! CC is not the horse they think he is. Not saying something is wrong now, though obviously and if they do find something wrong, i hope he makes a speedy recovery, so maybe, he can come back for the rematch, and SDG can trounce him again Laugh

I 'm glad that I didn't scroll back to my comment about Jamie saying he might not run at Cheltenham. He is easily my best result so far this week and it could not happen to nicer people. How he went out to 11/4 with 8lb in hand on all ratings is a mystery.

Report wellchief February 21, 2015 5:20 PM GMT
Great to see the old SDG back again.  Haven't got a penny on him for this years QMCC, but if Sprinter doesn't win, I hope it is SDG who takes advantage.  I stood up for him all the way up to the QMCC last year, and I got the most joy out of his win than any others at last years festival.

Fair play to the Moore's for today.  Would be a slight worry for me though having three runs in about 5 weeks, and this years lineup looks in a different league to last years.

That said, everyone loves to see a good weight carrying performance, and he is a horse you can't not like.
Report fivebagken February 21, 2015 5:36 PM GMT
I would suggest that beating Mister Grez 9 lengths when the latter was a stone wrong at the weights would be the very least that could be expected from a prospective champion chaser. No proof that he's back to last year's level IMO, and as has already been pointed out a return to last year's level may not be enough in any case.
Report Howdi February 21, 2015 5:52 PM GMT
^^ they weren't out of the handicap though (his opponents) Jim Bo (C4) thinks it would have needed a 170 performance so nothing to be sniffed out.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 February 21, 2015 6:05 PM GMT
Defo howdi and 170 performances would place in most QMCC's, at current prices he is a bet to nothing each way!
Report gutfeeling February 21, 2015 6:11 PM GMT
Or you could take the view that Grey Gold was beaten 22 lengths by DB and 19 by SS off levels but SDG just beat him 7 lengths giving him 20lbs which is a great performance in my opinion.
Report delsie777 February 21, 2015 6:36 PM GMT
I think that performance may have been a bit overrated by some - and I'm not ahving that he ran to 170 today. The whole deal with SDG is whether or not he relaxs into his races. As long as his jumping isn't put under pressure, he goes ok. The minute he makes a mistake the game will be up. Who knows, he may be good enough as he was last year. I think I may end up with Champagne Fever. If he makes it a good gallop he will place an emphasis on jumping and I can't trust Sprinter, SDG or Dodgy - that leaves Mr Mole and if he wins a QM we should all give up!
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 21, 2015 6:49 PM GMT
Im not sure where people get idea that SDG isnt a good jumper, only made a handful of mistakes in whole chasing career. Too much has been made of what happened at Newbury when returning from injury.

Jumped superbly today.
Report giggsy3444 February 21, 2015 6:58 PM GMT
Mister Grez was carrying 14lb more than his h'cap and was only beaten 9 lengths. I'll admit it was a better performance than Newbury (it couldn't have been much worse) but let's not get carried away. I was on ground he loves and he was able to pop away all the way round in a 4 runner race. The complete opposite conditions await him in the Champion chase and in a stronger race than last year.
Report wellchief February 21, 2015 7:20 PM GMT
Yeah Sonko, jumped great today and full of enthusiasm.  I think it was the second last where he really gave it some air, and it was a very easy 9 lengths; I think there was a lot more petrol in the tank.

Overall, I've never really seen his jumping as an issue - that's why he's a much better chaser than he was a hurdler.

As I put in this thread earlier today, this just shows how a horse can really improve for his first run back after a while.  If Sprinter shows anywhere near as much improvement as SDG did between Newbury and today, it must be Sprinter's to lose, considering he had a much longer layoff than SDG - Sprinter will hopefully have his ground in a few weeks too.
Report ACStafford February 21, 2015 8:43 PM GMT
I can't believe people are suggesting he's a bad jumper. There's only one better that will run in the QM imo.
Report sintonian February 21, 2015 9:02 PM GMT
Tremendous bit of training from Gary Moore imo. He knew his horse needed that extra run. If it were NJH he would have wrapped him up in cotton wool until March 12th.
Report duffy February 22, 2015 4:40 AM GMT
surely no-one thinks they witnessed a 170 performance today though do they?
Report duffy February 22, 2015 4:50 AM GMT
fine run as it was
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 6:51 AM GMT
No duffy, think you are right there not a 170 for me.
Anyway, hes not had a good prep at all,the race is better than last year, and hes had to do that yesterday just over 2 weeks before the QM.
No thanks.
Report Benjy February 22, 2015 9:23 AM GMT
In theory you have seen a 170+ performance there. This is where handicaps and graded races can't always be related for me though...

Good to see him back for the sake of the race. As suggested above it's hard to see him unplaced so possibly looks a solid e/w bet. That's not my style though (e/w) and I'm unlikely to be a backer tbh. Still think Mr Mole will beat both SS and SDG.
Report SoYouThink February 22, 2015 9:25 AM GMT
I was just looking at the Champion Chase and the pace side of things is interesting. Special Tiara, Mr Mole, Champagne Fever and Hidden Cyclone all like to control things from the front so someone isn't going to get their tactics but it's still sure to be relentless pace. I imagine out of the four of them one or two will have been burned off by the downhill to the third last.

Last year a few horses took turns in leading and the outcome a fast pace and a fast finishing Sire De Grugy. It looks to me like the race will be ideally run for him again. Likewise Dodging Bullets and Sprinter Sacre but I'm keener on Sire De Grugy than either of them.
Report sintonian February 22, 2015 10:12 AM GMT
I've not bet in this race yet but if I had to it would deffo be SDG. I think the way he jumped and travelled yesterday indicates he's in fine form. He's a real robust hardy horse too who backed up runs in quick succession before. Maybe the unintended time off will stand him in good stead in that regard. Amazing scenes if he wins.
Report wellchief February 22, 2015 10:20 AM GMT
I've laid all my Sprinter money off now for the same average odds that I backed him months ago - not because I don't fancy him, but I think his price may be a bit bigger nearer the time as I think the bookies will try and get him beat.

As long as Champagne Fever doesn't win I'll be quite happy! (Sorry CF backers).
Report sintonian February 22, 2015 11:25 AM GMT
Actually, I think i'm going to take some 4/1 NRNB on SDG, he'll be 3/1 on the day. I agree bookies will go after SS, simply because they know like we do that he is not as good as he was. He doesn't have to be, of course, but basically you're betting on horse who is not as good as he was.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 11:27 AM GMT
Out of the top 4 in the betting the only one I would consider is DB,hes had the perfect prep, and the perfect season.
I shall look at his odds on the day,or maybe NRNB may be the way to go.
So far I have Mr Mole and Hidden Cyclone at nice odds and very happy with that.
HC may go Ryanair so have covered him NRNB In that race.
Mr Mole is a quirky one I know, but hugely talented and runs like he has last twice hes a big player, dont want him messing about at the start though!! but that's where the price comes in.He is a price now though that would have me thinking about punting him......or not.
Given up on my Uxizandre bet, dont know whats happened to him since he beat DB earlier in the season.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 11:40 AM GMT
Guess I should say DB had "almost" the perfect season,as my last sentence has him getting beaten by Uxizandre!!
Laugh
Report sintonian February 22, 2015 11:43 AM GMT
Last season in the QMCC SDG beat Somersby 6 lengths...this season, as an improved horse, DB beat him 2.5, so on form SDG has the beating of DB. If you're a strict form book guru.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 11:58 AM GMT
Yep, fair points.
Had SDG had a similar season to that of DB I would certainly have him as having a good chance of retaining his title.
But its been far from that, and they have had to run him closer to the race than they would have liked, just to get him there. So now we have an awful build up plus a race that MAY leave its mark.

I dunno, its possible yesterday will bring him spot on in 2 and a half weeks time, and if it does fair play to you and others, cos it means hes a big player.
Theres Just not enough for me to be convinced he will be at his best, and at odds he is now or likely to be on the day, I just cannot have him.
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 22, 2015 12:07 PM GMT
I would much rather back a horse that ran 2 weeks ago rather than one that has run once in nearly 2 years.
Report sintonian February 22, 2015 12:15 PM GMT
Budde, you may think I am being biased as I have just backed the horse, but to my mind his build up has not been awful when you put it into comparison with SS and More of That in the world hurdle. SDG has at least raced twice this season, both in the space of a couple of weeks, To do that the horse would have to been in good physical condition at home otherwise he'd not be running. That's the complete oppposite of what SS and MOT have had. You then have to consider SDG is unbeaten in his last 6 completed starts over fences. I reckon we're over complicating things here by looking at alternatives, 4/1 is available about a horse who beat everything last season.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 12:19 PM GMT
I think I probably would as well, but against that is the fact that at their best SS is a better horse.
I would not back either this year as ive said earlier, too much to chance at respective odds for me.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 12:24 PM GMT
That was to sonko.

Yes Sint,we could we well be over complicating things and 4/1 may look good after the event.
Sooner or later judgements have to be taken, ive done that and will live or die by that....so to speak.

Yes he did beat everything last season, but hes yet to do that this season. Will he do it in March?? Yes,its possible, but Just not sure enough in my mind to back him.
Report buddeliea February 22, 2015 12:27 PM GMT
Just to add, I think the same about MOT,and actually if I had to back one of SDG,SS and MOT,i would side with SDG.
Report SEATHESTARS....NO1 February 22, 2015 12:41 PM GMT
Am actually considering a nice each way double SDG/MOT right now Crazy
