Report duffy March 9, 2013 6:20 PM GMT
Ground gone ideal for him but how good are mullins and co. feeling at the moment, couldn't see how OW could possibly handle HF on it, but could see him placed.
Report jasey March 9, 2013 6:22 PM GMT
That's what i thought the other when i had a bit of 75s.Remembering the words "if its soft OW runs in the churdle"

So,whats he up to this season, fences last i heard, anyone heard anything lately?
Report GI MAC October 29, 2013 6:43 PM GMT
chasing, read that in two stable tours
Report buddeliea October 29, 2013 6:49 PM GMT
cheers Mac,Arkle or Jewson?? could be ground dependant and of course he has to perform over fences first.
If he takes to the fences hes an interesting recruit for sure, top hurdler at his best.
Report GI MAC October 29, 2013 6:51 PM GMT
Top-class hurdler over two and a half miles but failed to win beyond that but did go close at Aintree. Rated 167 for the majority of last season and now 164 after finishing fourth to Zarkandar on final run at Ascot in April.

“It is time for him to go over fences and he’ll probably start over two and a half miles. I see no reason why he shouldn’t go to the top in chases.”

JEWSONS I'D SAY.....
Report wellchief October 29, 2013 6:56 PM GMT
Yeah, you'd have to say Jewson.

Doesn't properly stay 3m and not winning a Champion no matter what the ground.

I assume Grandouet is the Arkle horse and OW is the Jewson one.

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to get out and back him after a series of below par runs
Report buddeliea October 29, 2013 7:03 PM GMT
Yeh I would agree Jewson would be fav,but I expect him to be entered in the Arkle as well in case it comes up soft.Staying further is no bad thing for the Arkle either.
Not that many below par runs Chief, not when raced at his distance anyway, just the one at Aintree at the end of a season running over too far a distance and just plain kn^ckered imo.
If hes as genuine over fences as he was over hurdles, hes gonna be interesting,as long as it aint 3m!!!
Report wellchief October 29, 2013 7:08 PM GMT
Fair point Budd.

Its his own fault for being consistent for so long, that when he fails to place a couple of times it raises eyebrows, but as you say, there were valid reasons.
Report postiepete October 29, 2013 7:19 PM GMT
I would like the target to be The Arkle.Unfortunately Henderson does not see him as a 2 miler.Much will depend on how Oscar and Grad take to fences. Not all good hurdlers make good chasers.
Report GI MAC October 29, 2013 7:23 PM GMT
Come the festival, I'd be surprised if Hendo doesn't have others to be considered for both Arkle & Jewson.
Report buddeliea October 29, 2013 7:25 PM GMT
Indeed they don't,thats why its always interesting waiting for their 1st chase, and with OW im really itching to see how he gets on.
Report buddeliea October 29, 2013 7:26 PM GMT
well they are the best hurdlers hes got going chasing Mac,cant think of any others right now.
Report GI MAC October 29, 2013 7:34 PM GMT
Indeed, the best hurdlers, but there are always some novice hurdlers who turn out to be better novice chasers, I'm looking forward to Close Touch for one.

There's also My Tent or Yours, now theres a horse I'd like to see over a fence...
Report yeast October 29, 2013 8:25 PM GMT
best include Chatterbox in that list.
Report buddeliea October 30, 2013 8:02 AM GMT
Absolutely Mac,their will be a fair few nov chasers around, its a fascinating time of the season as they all come out jumping for the 1st time.
I don't strictly subscribe to the best hurdlers make the best chasers theme-always keep an open mind till I see them jump a fence-,but just saying that they are the 2 best that Henderson has going chasing-whether they end up his best 2 is another matter.
Report duffy October 30, 2013 2:40 PM GMT
My gut feeling would be to oppose oscar it's not a natural progression from a horse getting onto his proper job after a season over hurdles, they are now chasing as they've hit the wall with over hurdles and there's nowhere else to go now, even back over hurdles over 2 and a half now he'd have a harder time than he's had previous with Zark around, he won't be making my TTF list this year I'm afraid!Grin
Report buddeliea October 30, 2013 5:16 PM GMT
Nice one Duffy, thats what I like to hear.
The more people think that the better.

Fair comments mate,could be right.
I'm just hoping that the pigs ear his trainer has made with his campaigning wont affect him too much and he can make a good go at chasing.
Big season coming up for the horse, hope he can,hes been a real genuine horse for us to watch-even when his trainer took him out his comfort zone he was still genuine as can be.
Report brandyontherocks October 31, 2013 7:29 AM GMT
A cracking horse but Novice chasing as a 9 year old after 4 seasons hurdling, not on my TFT list either I'm afraid
Report buddeliea October 31, 2013 7:35 AM GMT
Good,more the merrier.
Happy
Its a worry Brandy I agree, but he still has time.
Report wellchief November 3, 2013 10:55 AM GMT
If Oscar does head down the Jewson route, a couple of his potential rivals are out today.

Felix Yonger and Sizing Rio in a good little race at Cork. Both have impressed in their chasing debuts are are both available at odds of bigger than 25/1 for the Jewson.
Report GI MAC November 3, 2013 11:34 AM GMT
Indeed, some good young novices in that race Chief. FY is one I'm keeping an eye on, I actually have an inkling he might end up in the Arkle, he has a nice blend of speed and stamina.
Report wellchief November 3, 2013 3:07 PM GMT
25/1 on Sizing Rio is still very generous imo after a round of jumping like that.

He's made for fences.
Report Howdi November 3, 2013 3:53 PM GMT

Oscar has an entry in a 2m5 novice chase at Wincanton this Saturday.
Report civej November 5, 2013 8:14 AM GMT
Also saw in the racing post that he could go for the 2m 4f race at the Paddy Power meeting which was won by Dynaste last year.
Report buddeliea November 7, 2013 12:27 PM GMT
See Geraghty is down to ride him at Wincanton on Saturday, pleased about that.
Report sc1883 November 7, 2013 12:49 PM GMT
Wont run at Wincanton on Saturday, saving it for Friday at Cheltenham in the 2 and a half mile novice chase.
Report buddeliea November 7, 2013 5:35 PM GMT
really? where you hear that sc?
Report buddeliea November 7, 2013 5:42 PM GMT
yep, just seen it on Sporting life site, cheers.
Report buddeliea November 14, 2013 12:49 PM GMT
Only 4 runners which is a shame, but all the same a tough debut for Oscar with all his opponents having a run over fences. If he jumps ok he should win imo, but its no picnic for sure.
Will be watching every fence with fingers firmly crossed!!
Report shockster November 14, 2013 1:08 PM GMT
He gets 5lb from Taquin Du Seuil and The Cockney Mackem over 2m4f and level weight with The Romford Pele.  Let's be honest if this were a hurdle race at the weights, he'd be 3's on to beat TDS and the others no chance.  So really if he is better than Evens it's a fair bet.  However, wouldn't want to take long odds on.  Am I being too flippant?
Report buddeliea November 14, 2013 5:21 PM GMT
Well he has to jump Shock,we don't know how he does yet.
Don't think we need to bet really, well I don't anyway.
Report shockster November 14, 2013 7:15 PM GMT
4/6 Oscar Whiskey.  As you said Budd will enjoy watching.  TDS could be a natural and won't be backing him either giving Oscar weight.
