Taking a look at the Stan James Champion Hurdle prices at this stage is a case in point, with five horses already trading at 8-1 or shorter. The way the bookies bet on the day of the race these days suggests to me a few of those will be bigger prices, especially as they all have their trials to run, so I don’t really think there is any point in backing the short ones in the Cheltenham markets at this stage.

Obviously that means we might miss the winner, but taking a single-figure price before any horse has run in its trial is fraught with danger, so instead I’m looking for a horse who might explode on to the scene in the coming weeks, and for me that one horse just has to be Cotton Mill.

It seems strange, but the best trial for the Champion in recent years has been the Neptune over 2m5f, probably because the Champion is a test of stamina as much as speed and often the better horses opt for the Neptune rather than the hustle and bustle of the Supreme on the opening day.

The great Istabraq ran in the Neptune in his novice season, as did dual winner Hardy Eustace, not to mention last year’s winner Rock On Ruby, who was just touched off in the previous season’s Neptune.

Last year’s Neptune looked as good as any renewal I can remember, with superstar Simonsig coming home alone. Back in third was strong World Hurdle fancy Monksland, so the form has worked out really well.

Coming to two out last year it was a two-horse race between Cotton Mill and Simonsig. That is where it all went wrong for Cotton Mill as he tried to run out, but he looked to be going equally as well as the winner and if you don’t believe me you should ask Denis O’Regan, who said after the race: “He was going as well as Simonsig but we’ll never know – it is a long time since I have been going as well at that stage of a race around here. It was a bit unfortunate, but I hope the horse is okay as he is obviously a right one.”

He was a fairly good price before the seagull tipped him, but is too short now for a horse that hasn't ran all season and was beaten in his last two runs last season. If 25/1 is a good price for the Champion Hurdle, then 9s on Saturday must be an absolute steal?

Horse needs 3 Miles,End of Thread.

Slow as a boat.
Report mushroom23 February 9, 2013 1:47 AM GMT
Horse doesn't stay 3 miles thats as clear as day. As for being as slow as a boat, well there's no response for a comment like that.
Report mushroom23 February 9, 2013 3:57 PM GMT
That was a cracking run
Report CheltenhamRoar February 9, 2013 4:05 PM GMT
Will never win a Grade 1 Hurdle over 2 Miles.imo
Report GoldCupWinner February 9, 2013 4:09 PM GMT
Run was decent given he apparently hates soft ground. If the ground isn't to blame then has no chance in Champ hurdle.
Report mushroom23 February 9, 2013 4:47 PM GMT
Hates soft ground is right, will come on a bundle for that as well. Won't win the ch i dont think but can run very well. County has to be tempting surely?
Report colupaul February 9, 2013 7:49 PM GMT
When the books settle down I'd be interested in backing Cotton Mill in the Champion Hurdle @ 33s NRNB...

Does anyone still fancy this to win CH given he got slammed getting weight yesterday, plus hes got to give weight away in champion as hes got the burden of pricewise on his back!!!! PLEASEConfused
Report RockMonkey February 10, 2013 2:45 PM GMT
Obviously more likely not to win CH than win it but I'm not unhappy to have it @ 40's. Run yesterday first time out, bizarrely enough on ground trainer has went to all lengths to avoid all winter, could hardly have been more encouraging.

Great run that will blown away the cotton cobwebLaughs
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 11, 2013 7:35 PM GMT
Not the worse long shot around, entitled to improve and doubtful he will be meeting MTOY in the champion.
Report colupaul February 15, 2013 8:38 PM GMT
Bit of a drifter this one... out to 60 on here... I backed it earlier this week at 44, thought that was fair... read in the Post today it may go for the Coral Cup... Confused
Report Ibrahima Sonko February 15, 2013 8:42 PM GMT
Stupid connections, if MTOY wasnt in the race it would had won decent renewal of the Schweppes.

Cant see the ground being like last season.

Sorry im fooled, ive got more chance of being the next pope than this has of winning the CH !!!
Report differentdrum February 16, 2013 10:43 AM GMT
As far as I can see there was no quote from connections in the Post suggesting he wasn't going the Champion route - just an analyst trying to be clever.
Report IrisDeBalme February 16, 2013 1:20 PM GMT
I actually did read that they were serious about running him in the Champion Chase until I saw him introduced into the Ryanair betting.

For me there is no dilemna he will get second in the Champion Chase... but Ryanair will be way too competitive for the horse and may struggle to get placed.

Report wondersobright February 22, 2013 5:12 PM GMT
won't run in the champion imo, county hurdle most likely
Report differentdrum February 22, 2013 5:30 PM GMT
Can't see any reason for a change of plan. Yes, he was tonked by My Tent Or Yours but that horse would in all probability have gone off second favourite for the Champion. Should come on for the run and improve loads for better ground. So it is a ten runner Champion Hurdle or a cavalry charge under a big weight - should be a no brainer. Hope this isn't anything to do with allowing O'Regan to ride Countrywide Flame.
