It was my first cheltenham festival,i can remember waking up on the thurs morning to find about a foot of snow round my ankles. We used to stop at the queens hotel in them days,or should i say there car park. The week had started of great had a good punt on monksland at 8s returned 11/2 & now we ve got to head of home.Almighty dissapointment, was going to back midnight court in the gold cup,i think it was run in the april & i never backed it then. The Queens was full of high stakes poker & backgammen games in them days, with the london mobsters stiching up the pissed up paddys.Anyway the drinking, singing & gambling used to go on all night. Can anyone remember the dirty duck where we used to go for a steak after racing? Them 3 day festivals will always be the best,or 2 for my first experence of it.In them days the television coverage was done by the bbc,so on monday night i used to spend about 3 hours trying to set the timer on my video recorder, for the 3 days racing. This was a nightmare as the coverage used to switch from bbc1 to bbc2 on all 3 days,so trying to cram as many races on to a 3 hour tape was near inpossible. In those days we used to go best mate enclosure,so getting back to see the tele coverage was a must.So sitting down on the fri to relive all the excitement of the week, only to find about 3 half run races, childrens programes & the ffs budget. Happy days!!
