Gutted!!!
Was really looking forward to seeing how Al Ferof fared this season. Not many bets, but i was quiet excited with my 85 for the Gold Cup!!
Oh well.
Report roobuck December 17, 2012 7:04 PM GMT
This really is desperate news. I'm afraid it sounds like it could be something far more significant for the stable in general, I really hope not Sad
Report SN02 December 17, 2012 7:09 PM GMT
Hope they are ok , I wonder what it could be ?
Will thecwondervmare go for the world hurdle ?

Big Buck's owner Andy Stewart: "He has a tiny tear in one of his legs, so the best way is to let nature heal that."

Unbelievably bad luck to lose 2 such high profile horses at the same time
Report buddeliea December 17, 2012 7:21 PM GMT
God knows what they have found thats wrong with them,2 horses at the same time!! just hope they are both able to recover well and come back.
Report wellchief December 17, 2012 7:24 PM GMT
Terrible news.

I think this is the first year that I haven't doubled everything up with Bucksy, so dodged the bullet there.

Smashes the World Hurdle wide open.
Report FOYLESWAR December 17, 2012 7:24 PM GMT
same here budd 85s and a lot of 80s gold cup , still only money , hope the horses make good recovery , losing crystal bonus was a blow for nicholls and connections on sat.
Report wellchief December 17, 2012 7:26 PM GMT
Could have implications for Oscar Whisky as well, as it'll be a lot easier to get the trip with no machine to pass.
Report chelters16 December 17, 2012 7:28 PM GMT
Sickener for PN + connections the festival will be the worse without AF+the mighty BB,but thats the nature of the game.
Report R Carver December 17, 2012 7:30 PM GMT
I echo that Wellchief. I think this may make the decision for NJH (the vibes have been suggested a 2nd crack at BB anyway). I think Peddlars Cross may prove the more formidable stayer, if he returns in good health.

Whatever the case, this is bad news. Big Bucks the best horse in training IMO (either code) for some yrs so this is awful. Lets hope its not so bad and both return sooner rather than later.
Report buddeliea December 17, 2012 7:31 PM GMT
Well World Hurdle becomes a completely different race with no BB,gonna affect a few horses if he dont make it.

As for OW,it will probably depend on the ground,if its decent they might be tempted to have another go,if its soft he would have another go at the CH i reckon.
Report sageform December 17, 2012 7:33 PM GMT
Once again, the first run of the season is the one that exposes any weakness in a horses legs. It is very sad but all too common that the best NH horses end up with tendon trouble. Human athletes are no different. The faster you run the more likely you are to get injured.
Report wellchief December 17, 2012 7:35 PM GMT
Yep, World Hurdle could now turn into a hell of a race.

Possibly Oscar, Peddlers, 1000 Stars and if they ever wanted Quevega to win a proper race at the festival, then this is it.
Report GoldCupWinner December 17, 2012 7:37 PM GMT
I think OW and Thousand Stars definitely paid the price trying to put it up to Big Bucks this year given how the other two placed horses where ridden. I was shocked to see Thousand Stars toiling and seeminly looking a non stayer since he seems to stay further when ran in France. Can't think off the top of my head any up and coming 3m hurdlers from last year.

Similar to the Kauto issue last year, this once again shows how good the Nicholls staff are imo.

No big drift on Big Bucks, no stable staff or insiders mopping up all the money as far as I can see.

If BB or Al Ferof were in certain other yards, they would have cleaned up!
Report R Carver December 17, 2012 7:55 PM GMT
I agree (again) WC. Nicholls should have been more open after Kauto's fall, but at least his price was stable and (I think) not subject to gross profiteering.
Report Tory December 17, 2012 8:03 PM GMT
awful news, feel so sorry for all of the connections. Had both in my Ten to Follow and was in top 250 so there that goes, and really fancied Al Ferof for the KG. Had £15 @ 40's - was really excited for Boxing Day with that little bet.

Just hope they both make it back safe and sound and credit to Nicholls for getting the news out so quickly.
Report roobuck December 17, 2012 8:04 PM GMT
foyles, silviniaco won't be ready to run surely? If they wanted to keep him fresh they will have backed off after the betfair

My opinion on PFN could not have changed more over the last week.

Having been annoyed at his petulance over Kauto, to respect over his humilty on Saturday interview, to admiration of his undoubted training ability and now sadness to this crushing blow following on from Cristal Bonus.

Like others have said, also says a lot about the stable that news came out before the betfair markets knew.

Wishing connections all the best

Gutted for the loss of both horses especially Big Bucks especially in a year without Kauto and the retirement of Frankel, racing needs these superstar horses. Al Ferof will certainly be missed this season and hurts PN chances of retaining the trainers championship.

Just really hope we see BB back in training!
Report ReaseHeath December 17, 2012 8:17 PM GMT
feel bad for connections - thought Bucksy was bombproof - not normally one or conspiracy theories but does seem strange beyond coincidence that arguably the two highest profile horses in the stable were both found to have a problem at the same evening stables.

More to follow no doubt.

Awful news for Nicholls just as things seemed to be picking up.
Report ReaseHeath December 17, 2012 8:43 PM GMT
reading the owner quotes on RP site, I'd be very careful about the World Hurdle, 'tiny tear, unlikely, probably, let nature take it's course, G1 in three months not my style'

Al Ferof looks more definitive for this season unfortunately.

Looks like it is just a horrible coincidence, so sad after events of last week and Cristal Bonus.

Heartfelt sympathies to connections of both horses. Devastating news for them but also for us enthusiasts, fo whom the top horses provide such entertainment. The remainder of our season will be the poorer for their absence.

Just hope he can have another go next season.
Report resner not lesnar December 18, 2012 10:06 AM GMT
Ffs. I read this at half 2 this morning when a little worse for wear, I hoped when I woke up this morning that I'd dreamt it or something!
At least Nicholls has said both will be back. And trying to look at it as positively as possible, regaining his World Hurdle crown at 11 could be Big Bucks biggest challenge yet.

Al Ferof is still young so hopefully he will get his chance to run in the top races again. A shame for this years King George mind as its wide open and he probably would have gone very close
