although i feel he could still undoubtably win a decent race ,its better to go out with the light still shining brightly, one of the best ever .

Must be paraded before the crowds at next year's Gold Cup.

Hopefully he will be paraded at Kempton and Cheltenham this year (and Haydock but that would be greedy!) Will never forget being on course for last years Betfair Chase

Legend best I have seen. Glad he has been retired, done enough - If anything had happended to him it would have taken years to recover.

Well said Howdi - well done Paul Nicholls and his team - a marvellous training performance to get so much out of the horse over such a long time.
Like you he's the best steeplechaser I've seen and I think the best of my lifetime. |

How lucky they have been to have him, how lucky he has been to have them and how lucky we have been to watch & enjoy him. A real end of an era now with him & Denman gone but how wonderful they have both retired in health to enjoy a happy retirement. Will miss them both badly.

The Kauto Star Betfair Chase has a ring to it seeing as he did so much too popularise the race.

Would be nice if something at the Festival or at Kemptons Boxing day could become forever The Kauto much as The Arkle has become The Arkle despite who sponsers it.

one of the finest horses Kauto uased to beat was Exotic Dancer fond memory of him too. RIP.

Now he's retired and see what he won, his CV is arguably the greatest in national hunt history (possibly due to Arkle been cut a little short by injury).

kautos cv is fantastic and he deserves all the accolades and i am not comparing them, but lets not forget the flying grey desert orchid won king georges a gold cup good 2 miles hurdles and 2 mile chases and an irish grand national over 3m 6f giving lumps of weight away .both legends a very few who have taken the imagination of the people .........kauto ,dessie and rummy on first name terms with most punters and the public !

Sad news that we'll never see him race again. Nicholls has handled him brilliantly and kept him going last season despite mis-guided
calls for the horse to be retired .He'll know the horse inside out and must have seen something that wasn't quite right. Possibly one of the minority of horses who at times appeared to enjoy racing and watching him at times was a real joy and the essence of jump racing. If horses could speak KS may have wanted to continue to be kept in training and he may get bored in retirement. Hopefully connections will find something interesting to occupy him . |

They've got old Denman working hard haven't they to keep him amused. Old Denman, I still miss him brute of a creature and always had a massive place in my heart. I loved the fact that they used to be mates and were always photograghed together - yet went to war once a year. Great days and sometimes you don't realisae just how good until they are gone.
Now lets Sprinter Sacre takes over the mantle. |

For sure Howdi. Never seen KS and Denman in the flesh but still feel an emotional connection with them thats not connected with betting.

Legend of a horse. Would be great to see it paraded on the Friday next March. Had a lump in my throat when he was pulled up last year and got a standing ovation.

What I loved about him was his vulnerability. I really like Big Bucks and Quevega (who doesn't), but I always felt 100% confident that they would win, which kind of took the emotion out of it; Kauto would have you on the edge of your seat, your heart racing, willing him to win (whether financially involved or not). Because he was prone to the odd last fence blip, and because he was beaten occasionally, this only made me want him to win more.
Unfortunately I never saw any of his Tingle Creeks when he was Champion 2 miler, that was before my time. The first race I remember him in was the infamous L'Ami race with the final fence. It was because of Kauto, Well Chief, Exotic Dancer, and Howard Johnson's Lennon that got me into racing. I managed to see him six times (I think). Three times in the Betfair Chase, twice in the Gold Cup and once at Kempton. Of the six times he only won twice, but that didn't matter. He lost to Snoopy Loopy in the Betfair, to Long Run in the King George and Denman and Imperial Commander in the Gold Cup. I saw him beat Exotic Dancer in the Betfair, and last years epic renewal. On the go from a 3 year old; 9 years older and 41 races later, no one can begrudge him a happy retirement. Football rivalries aside, I'd never think I'd cheer more than when Liverpool pulled it back in Istanbul, but when Kauto won last year's Betfair, that was in a different league, and I don't think anything will ever come close to that. Sprinting to the winners enclosure, just because you felt you were witnessing history in front of you. I wasn't planning on going to this year's Betfair, but if he is going to be paraded, I'll be at the front with the digital camera ready  We've had the Lough Derg Long Walk Hurdle, the Denman Chase, the Monets Garden Old Roan Chase; arise the Kauto Star Betfair Chase. That's the sentemental bit out of the way; where's Howdi's fact of the day thread so I can start giving some verbal abuse  |

One of the greatest ever and a horse who's rise and subsequent reign has coincided with the period in which I fell in love with the sport.
By far the best I have ever seen and will remain my favourite for life. There aren't many that you get an emotional tie to and this was it for me. There'll only ever be one Kauto Star. Have a long and happy retirement old boy. |

I'm glad that i was there to see his final race - even if it ended a circuit too soon.
it would have been amazing to see him win another king george, but i'd have watched the race from behind the sofa, petrified something would go wrong. it will take an unbelievable horse to knock Kauto off the top of my favourite horses list. |
