1: Finian's Rainbow! Been backing him for months and months and have explained the reasons on countless threads. Seeing him outbattle Sizing up the hill was magic.
2: Synchronised! Been telling everyone for weeks that he had absolutely zero chance of winning a Gold Cup featuring classier and faster horses. A shocker for me.
3: Sir Des Champs was electric. Jumped well, travelled extremely well and flew up the hill. He'll stay further, is two from two at the Festival and is getting better. Definite candidate to go right to the top over the bigger obstacles.
4: Grands Crus. Love him to bits but was not happy from halfway in the RSA. No obvious excuses but for a horse that pushed Big Buck's hard last year and settled well on Wednesday he was beaten too far out for stamina to have been the reason. Will definitely give him another chance but it was a real low point for me.
5: Placing 90% of your bets before arriving at the track means you can really enjoy the day. I had a fair few pints of Guinness, got food when I wanted and had perfect viewing positions on all four days, all because I wasn't charging around trying to get bets on and achieving the aforementioned things. Didn't miss any value either.

1. From a betting perspective it's Alderwood, as it was my only winner! From a personal point of view i'd say First Lieutenant as he was my NAP of the festival and was majorly keen on his chances a long, long way before March. Shame he ran into a resurgent Bob's Worth
2. Mossley, thought he was chucked in in the WH Chase and in fact, he's just a big gayer
3. Noel Fehily on Rock On Ruby. A peach of a ride

1. Sprinter Sacre and Al Ferof. Posted before Xmas that Al Ferof was slow and could not win the Arkle. Stated clearly that Sprinter Sacre was at least a 165 horse after his debut at Doncaster and that he had at least a stone in hand of the Arkle field and suggested that distance bets over 4 lengths should be considered
2. Thought Binocular was nailed on for a place. He only just missed out and you can argue about rides and track bias all day (and I would too) but he didn't do it. I do think it was a particularly poor ride and I should know better because I never get McCoy right. Have hammered some of his bad rides and laid winners in the past so I tend to leave it alone.
3. Horse: Sprinter Sacre - no telling how good he could be Jockey: Geraghty Trainer: Henderson
4. Apart from the officials making a pigs ear of the Champion Chase, Ruby Walsh riding Cheltenham like it is one of those ploughed field Irish tracks in deep winter when he can rely on being 20 lengths behind the front runners only for them to stop and come back to him. He gave Big Bucks a great tactical ride by making sure he was up with pace and that he made use of himself at the right stage of the race to go win it rather than just trying to catch the front runners. There may have been a track bias against the deep hold up horses and he should have picked up on it. Thought he gave a poor display of riding (didn't help that Nicholls weren't firing either) for a man of his class

1: That the Gold Cup principals were over rated and lighter raced progressive horses would improve past them and that most of the hotpots would get beat
2: My ante post book was a disaster!

1) Backing Cinders & Ashes both antepost and on the day.Guaranteed a profit after one race. Good job to as I just about broke even on the other 26 races.
2) Forgetting I'd made a note of Alderwood after its last run and not having a penny on it.
3) Sir des Champs.Convinved he'll win the Gold Cup next year.
4) Kauto Star in only that it was such a shame he could not do himself justice. For others that I backed the biggest flop was Noble Prince.

my lesson is that this year I focused on quality racing and prepared for Cheltenham through out the winter. Had 9 winners all of which I'd decided to back by last weekend. The six races that I made my selections on the day were all losers. So if you have time do your homework.

5. remember horses placed/beaten in the Feltham often win the RSA
1.balthazar king, unfashionable race but beggars cant be choosers, he was just about to hit the front and was staying on strongly in the november debacle...he was way too big at 12's tuesday morning...punters latched onto him late on.
2.sprinter sacre and i can already see that i still haven't learned with regards to him.
3.simonsig for me, novice chasing next year and i can see much of the noises that have been surrounding SS this year , will in turn be made concerning him, but this time going in i am going to be swimming with the tide.
4. peddlers cross without any shadow of a doubt,the jewson rounded off what has been a wretched season for him, when you hear connections state that horses are simply "waiting to go over fences" you assume that they are talking with regards to the horses appearance physically as much as perceived talent, amazing to think that in this case they couldn't tell at home that in effect ...he couldn't do it.
5. Never take for granted as gospel anything you hear from ANY trainer even if they have had up to this point a blemish free record.

you may have heard me say that I have had horses and shares in horses for over 20 years in lots of different yards both flat and jumps and I can tell you with complete honesty that even as an owner I treat most of what the trainers have ever told me with complete contempt. David Nicholson wouldn't even tell us when the handbrake was coming off. We took our horse away from him. Form your own opinions and cover your back is my advice

2E/W is as hard if not harder to pick , and so many talking horses ,nowhere at the business end .
3 Sir des champs ,most impressive for me ,always thought he lobbed along, and came at leisure to take the race in hand easily .
4 Taking poor kauto to races and finishing pulled up , earned retirement soon ? luckily for owners horse appears to be well ? like putting a saddle on your 90 year old grandad , fortunately one I did not fall for , though can tell a list of some I did fall for ..
5 Followed damned tipsters with monopoly money, OR get yourself skint ? , use your money wisely on your own fancy . E/W at this gaff is for the birds ? and to top lot poor starts and restarts and again ,,,,dolled of fence ? and jock taking hose through wing of a fence , cutting corner too quick to steal a march ?
