It is just speculation and problaby wildly inaccurate, but just a thought (and hardly a grand design) - if their best shot at the race does not run, another might slot in, even if in other ownership. Lots of 'ifs', I agree!

Lay imo in both Arkle and Champion Hurdle at prices certainly wont be losing on both bets even if he gets there?

If the market is anythin to go by......
Single figures now for CH and cant be given away for Arkle! |

I'll be gutted if he goes for the Champion Hurdle.
Turned down 33/1 last year off 365 before his Neptune win. I'm one of his biggest fans and was with him all year, but it did look a pretty poor Neptune last year; so wouldn't go anywhere near him at single figures. Would love to see Peddlers have another crack, but can see him in the World. |

It looks like the Spirit Son situation might have changed their calculations - which is also something to reflect on for fans of Hendo's other CH candidates.

Very strong for the CH today and money completely dried up for the Arkle

He was 4/1 in March last year and is best price 7/2 on the books currently. He trades on here at the moment at just over 6/1. For the life of me, I don't understand why. The post race comments of both BJG and NH after the Arkle clearly indicated he would improve for jumping fences. His owner is a dyed in the wool hunting and point to point man.
He'll be 7 in January. Anyone see him running in the Arkle as an 8yo? I don't....though in Moscow Flyer he would be keepimg good company! |

BAcked for the Arkle, friendless for the Champion
Looks like a decision may have been made! |

no axe to grind as no bet unlike some others on here, but why wouldn't the owners go for the Champion? there's no standout horse in it and he'd have every chance of winning it. He can then go chasing the season after. If he goes chasing straight away they'll never know if they left a champion hurdle cup by the wayside!!

maybe because trainer has three other live chances with grandouet ,darlan and oscar whiskey....and binocular too !!!
|
|
By:
trainer doesnt own him though

I'm thinking what you are thinking BJG.
|

Trainers are paid to make decisions on whether to stay hurdling or go nov chasing.
Hendo has said all along hes a chaser,as he did with Sprinter Sacre, thats why hes going nov chasing, and not hurdling this season. I dare say SS may have won the CHurdle, and others i expect over the years, but decisions have to be made for the long term benefit of the horse that the trainer seems fit to make. If he sees Simonsig as a future star over fences,as seems the case, then to me it makes sense to start chasing as soon as he can. |
|
By:
I agree Budd. As they say in another context, if you are going to keep a dog, dont bark yourself...
|
|
By:
true Carver....but also put the horse with a trainer who is going to put it in the best race for the horses owners not his championship points;-)
can debate it til we're blue in the face but I suspect tyronesam is correct but agree with Howdi!! thing is Carver, developing your analogy further, there are plenty of 'other dogs' out there who'd love to train him!! |
|
By:
well as hes a chaser according to the person who should know best, the one who works with him every day, then i presume the Arkle would be the best race for the horses owners.
And i would think they have had an opinion on this anyway. |

Hi n6! I would not be surprised if the trainer wanted to keep some of his horses away from the champion!
Personally I think Simonsig would come out on top of his Champion bunch but I think they should go chasing. He was built and bought for it. It is true the owner pays the bills, and lots of others would love to train him, but they sent him to the best last year (presumably in part) because his judgement is trusted and the trainer and jockey made the right call to go for the Neptune, so I think if the trainer is now calling for him to jump a fence, the owner should agree. If they select hurdling, the owner should agree. If you send a horse to a trainer, you should trust them and let them call the shots IMO (running over the National fences being the only exception!!). |

Anyone who thinks that a decision has been made regarding the current season's campaign without the owner's full involvement needs their head examining. However, he used to ride in point to points, still hunts and generally acquires horses for pointing, or for racing under rules from the pointing scene. It is highly unlkely that he was thinking about a potential Champion Hurdle winner when he bought the horse from Simon Tindall. We won't know for sure of course until he's a declared runner somewhere.

be interesting to see where he starts off...does everyone think they'll put him in a novice chase straight off the bat or run him over hurdles?
|
|
By:
If he starts over hurdles, then he'll probably stay over hurdles. Hendo is not one for over racing horses in general and Festival fancies in particular. He's unlikely to have more than 3 runs before March and if they favour the Arkle, then I believe he will start over fences.

Racing Post report that Neptune winner Simonsig has schooled over fences. Henderson quoted as saying that is the way he is leaning.
|
|
By:
which way is he 'leaning' over fences hope its to the left if he wants to run at Cheltenham
