• Three odds-on shots feature on the first card of the week • RSPCA have meeting with BHA on new whip rules
Greg Wood guardian.co.uk,
Edward Gillespie, the managing director of Cheltenham racecourse, said on Wednesday that the first afternoon of the track's Festival meeting next Tuesday will offer "great value" to punters, even though three of the seven races are likely to have odds-on favourites.
The two feature events on Tuesday's card, the Champion Hurdle and the Arkle Trophy, will also have relatively small fields after only 12 and 10 horses respectively were confirmed for the Grade One events at the six-day stage. Hurricane Fly, the defending champion hurdler, and Sprinter Sacre, the hot favourite for the Arkle, were both top-priced at 10-11 with bookmakers on Wednesday evening.
Despite their cramped odds, however, Gilliespie believes that offers around even-money about Sprinter Sacre in particular are a sign that the competitive edge to Cheltenham's racing is as sharp as ever.
"It feels as though there are more short-priced favourites than usual this year," Gillespie said, "though it may well be that someone will come up with the statistics to prove me wrong. But I saw the price about Sprinter Sacre yesterday and I thought that it is such great value. Anywhere else, he'd be going off at 3-1 on. So these favourites may be odds-on, but if so, there's value in the odds-on.
"It's beyond our scope to have every race with an average of 18 runners and the favourite going off at 5-1, but people have been around long enough to know that there's no such thing as a certainty at Cheltenham. Knowing that the bookmakers will probably come out on top after four days, we'd love them to lend some money to our punters for the first couple. Let's play with their money for a bit, then everyone can have a nice night out and bring it back the following day – there's nothing wrong with that."
The third horse on Tuesday's card expected to start at odds-on is Quevega, who will be going for a fourth consecutive victory in the Mares Hurdle after wins at 2-1, 6-4 and 5-6 over the last three seasons.
"The fate of these three runners will set the tone for the entire week," David Stevens, of Coral bookmakers, said . "If they all win punters will be on the front foot and looking to inflict further pain on the layers with the likes of Sizing Europe [in the Queen Mother Champion Chase] and Big Buck's [in the World Hurdle]. However, if the first day treble is scuppered, we will fancy taking on the other supposed good things later in the week."
David Muir, the chief equine consultant to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, met senior officials from the British Horseracing Authority, including Paul Bittar, its chief executive, at Fontwell Park to discuss the latest revisions to the BHA's rules on the controversial new whip rules.
"It was a very convivial meeting," Muir said afterwards, "with Jamie Steir [the BHA's director of regulation], Tim Morris [director of equine science and welfare] and of course Paul Bittar, and also Gavin Grant, our new chief executive.
"We wanted to make it clear that [the RSPCA] want this to work, that we are never proscriptive and will always be pragmatic. There is now a lot of trust being placed in the jockeys, and I've got every confidence that the stewards will do their job, so let's just hope that we can put this whole thing to bed.
"We've always said, let's see what the result is and then we'll make a comment, rather than saying: 'This will never work.' We've never worked like that with racing, and we are certainly not the enemy of racing."
Grumeti, the ante-post favourite for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham, is making good progress after being found to be slightly lame on Tuesday morning, according to Alan King, the four-year-old's trainer. "Things are looking positive," he added. "He is going the right away and we will keep everybody posted. The soreness is coming out, which has to be a good sign."
It is his fault. Too many races = too much choice = easier options outside the big races = weaker fields in the big races. If there was no mares race, Quevega would be odds against elsewhere; if there was no Jewson, Peddlers would be in the Arkle.

Actually it is his fault the horses are odds on. He has been the driving force in adding extra races to the meeting which has diluted the quality of the fields.

what horses could line up against SS, HF and SE that would make any real difference to the races? just PC for the Arkle really, there's nothing running elsewhere that could trouble the Fly and Sizing has beaten everything that he could face. The Mares race is useless I agree though

Course its his fault. He introduced the Jewson that meant that half the Arkle horses dont line up. And without the Mares, Quevega and Unaccompanied would be in the Champion Hurdle/World Hurdle, two other races with odds on favourites.

Peddlers would have been a strong 2nd fav and there are numerous horses in the Jewson that 2 years ago would be going for either the Arkle or the Rsa.
Whilst the Ryanair is fast becoming my favourite race there is no question that it has diluted the competitiveness of both the Gold Cup and the Queen Mother...........and a horse of the quality of Quevega really should be running in the Champion or the World Hurdle.
I agree about the Triumph /Fred Winter.

Having quoted the example of the Fred Winter, I have to say that I think that's the only real enhancement of the programme. I remember when you could readily remember all 18 winners at each Festival and, while the Bumper was a logical addition, most of the other races are not. Quite where we will be when they add the fifth day, i don't know but the trend, if there is one, towards avoiding the superstars can only increase. With today's programme, I think Arkle would have had two walkovers in his last two Gold Cups.

the first three/four races on the tuesday (in both the 3 or 4 day fetsival) in my opinion are the best start to a racing festival you can get who cares what prices the fav starts at they are either the next Golden Cygnet/Brave Inca or the next Dunguib/Cue Card thats the charm to me anyway you are looking to get the festival off to a start or see the fav beat.. its not like anyone puts a gun to your head to bet and it makes the monday night great by the time you get to the course even with the on line phone bookies you are gagging to get a bet on due to some conversation/overheard conversation/morning paper/ maybe i am misisng a trick but isn't that what nakes it great..yes the new races have led to a few defections but the prices to me reflect the interest in those first races as much as anything
for the general public the gold cup is the be all..personally love the tuesday and wednesday and am gutted to be missing it
interestingly the melb cup carnival the saturday is for the purists loads of group ones the victorian derby, the melb cup day is like gold cup day but worse racing wise sold as a one event bonanza..and attended with that in mind not a cricicsm just the way i see it

I think the more true racing fans make their voices heard - that this is entirely Mr Gillespie's fault with the dilution of competition with the addition of dopey races, the less the wholesale rush to a five day festival.

hope to see you back at the Festival in the not too distant Clockend! At least you have Molly Malones this year!
I fully agree with you about the start of the Festival - different class! Lets hope Gillespie doesn't balls it up with the inexorable move to a 5-day Festival. I fear the worst though.

I think this is the worst year for AP prices & "will he wont he"?. Just as an example, I remember when the Arkle fav went off 5 or 6-1. What happened to the 40 odd 2011 Supreme/Neptune horses, are you trying to tell me we will only have 6 runners in this years Arkle?. Punters still have no idea what race GC/SDC/BB/Ted Spread/etc are running in?. I nominate the Jewson, Mares, XCountry & AB as being totally uncall for. Although I love the festival (and always will) like the races, my anticipation is becoming more & more diluted each year.

Re today's Guardian piece,(Edward Gillespie defends uncompetitive Cheltenham Festival opening day) I did not use "defend" anywhere in copy, AND quite deliberately, as in my opinion Edward Gillespie has absolutely nothing to defend. The headline misses that significant point completely, but I don't write the headlines. Using "defend" in headline implies that there has been some kind of "attack" on the quality of first day card, which is nonsense.

Can someone who uses Twitter get back to Greg Wood and point him at this forum for starters.
I think he'll find an 'attack' of some substance on the quality of day one (for starters) at the festival, which can be laid entirely at the door of the Cheltenham Exec IMO
