Cheltenham Festival: Top of the shop for the Queen - our guide to the Foxhunters

By David August 28th February 2012

Racemail’s David August runs the rule over the main contenders for the Christies Foxhunters Chase, headed by The Queen’s Barbers Shop.

CHAPOTURGEON: Won the Jewson Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham in 2009 and has finished second and fourth in six subsequent starts at the track.

Put himself bang in the picture for this race with an easy win on his hunter chase debut at Newbury in January when coming home 16 lengths in front of Cloudy Lane. (Trainer: Richard Barber)

ON THE FRINGE: Won the key Irish trial (Raymond Smith Memorial) for this race at Leopardstown last year before finishing fourth to Zemsky. Returned to action after nearly a year’s absence to claim third spot when bidding to repeat his win at Leopardstown in February. Entitled to improve a lot for that outing. (Trainer: Enda Bolger)

SALSIFY: Held on stoutly to win a decent hunter chase at Punchestown in May 2011 and was not disgraced when a neck second in an Open contest at the Dromahane point seven months later. Continued his improvement  by winning the competitive Raymond Smith Memorial Hunter Chase at Leopardstown last time out.
(Trainer: Roidger Sweeney)

MONKERTY TUNKERTY: Still a bit of an unknown quantity in this event as he followed up a win at the Wadebridge point-to-point with an impressive victory on his hunter chase debut in a decent affair at Warwick in January.
Made most of the running in the latter event and jumped well apart from the odd error along the way. (Trainer: Jessica Westwood)

CLOUDY LANE: Interestingly, his only start to date at Cheltenham resulted in victory in the 2007 Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase. Has 16 lengths to make up on Chapoturgeon having finished second to that horse at Newbury, but returned to winning ways in a small-field hunter chase at Ayr last time out. (Trainer: Sian McCain)

BARBERS SHOP: Would be an appropriate winner for the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year. Has run fairly well at Cheltenham in the past, with a second in the 2008 Jewson Novices’ Chase being the highlight.

After a spell hunting in Cheshire, he returned in good order to beat two opponents in a hunter chase at Fakenham and a last-time-out win at Fontwell. (Trainer: Nicky Henderson)

KEY STATISTICS: Nineteen of the last 21 winners were aged 10 or younger. Six of the last 16 winners made virtually all the running.

BETTING: 6 Chapoturgeon, 8 On The Fringe, Salsify, 12 Monkety Tunkerty, 14 Cloudy Lane, Barbers Shop
