It's a gambling stable what do you expect? Apart form Paul Nicholls who else is helpful in the racing world? And the reason for that is because Betfair are lining his pocket for god knows how much.

It was only yesterday, or the day before that he was quoted as saying that if it did miss Cheltenham then it wouldn't be due to it's current problem. The market on here told a different story.
Report BJG February 21, 2012 5:23 PM GMT
Henderson said: "We've had a slight change of plan with the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday.

"Grandouet has unfortunately gone and banged a hind leg in his box overnight and can't run, but he's perfectly all right and he's just had to have some medication to clear it up.

"Hopefully he'll be perfectly all right in three or four days time, the timing of it is just unfortunate.

Did anyone ever consider that the horse's condition may have deteriorated / not responded to treatment? He is hopeless IMO at keeping the public up to date, like 99% of trainers, but does anyone think NJH sits in front of Betfair laying horses or making money out of laying them? Unbelievable.

The thing is Carver someone has been sitting hunched over a computer ,(with or without trilby) hovering up on this horse which was given a positive report for Cheltenham just a couple of days ago.  Someone who presumably knew that the horses condition was somewhat different.

Report R Carver February 21, 2012 6:27 PM GMT
As I say, i think their media skills are quite poor, and whilst the bulletin on Saturday was quite positive, anyone backing it on that basis needs their head reading IMO. If a horse bangs a leg, even if the immediate prognosis seems ok, knowing how things can deteriorate quickly, I would have thought it prudent to wait and see...
Report R Carver February 21, 2012 6:29 PM GMT
* Should read - I would not dispute that one way or another money appears to talk from that outfit
Report Dark Destroyer February 21, 2012 6:32 PM GMT
True that would be no justification for jumping in to back the horse, however those who left their existing backs up on the assumption that the report was reliable (choosing my words carefully) have been royally screwed by someone who knew otherwise.

GRANDOUET will undergo investigative surgery in Newbury on Tuesday night for a problem with his near-hind leg that prevented him from running at Wincanton last weekend.

Trainer Nicky Henderson told racingpost.com that he is "guarded" over Grandouet's chance of running in the Stan James Champion Hurdle, for which he is a top-priced 9-1.

Henderson said: "The plan is to flush the joint tonight and that should give us a clearer idea of the full extent of the injury. We'll know a lot more in the morning about whether he'll be able to run at Cheltenham. I'll keep everyone informed."

Oh the irony Crazy

I'm afraid I have a totally different take on the conspiracy/putting punters away theory and I make the observation with nil financial interest in the CH.

Priviledged information has always been available to stable staff but betting exchanges are a relatively recent phenomenon. This iformation used to take some time to filter through to bookmakers.

The prime responsibility of a trainer is to his horses and owners. Everything else comes second. NH has some of the the most powerful/influential owners as patrons and he has an enviable success record at the NH Festival. God knows what might happen if he went blabbing to the press about one of Buckley's, or JP's without speaking to them first. I'm not singling these owners out, simply using them as examples....they could be anywhere in the world if something went wrong.

If a fancied horse with a progressive profile like Grandouet suddenly drifts alarmingly on here, the last thing I'd want to do is back it. Wise up.
Report sintonian February 22, 2012 10:23 AM GMT
Dont buy into the conspiracys either. Sure, some toerag has been laying it, but NJH must employ at least 50 people in his stable. One of them could quite easily tell a mate to Lay the horse as they themselves are not allowed. They'd be risking their jobs if so and what for, a few hundred quid? Alternatively, it could be someone with commonsense who simply read the news about Grandouet missing the Kingwell and decided to take a view and Lay the horse.
NJH just seems a bit slow in reacting to the betting public, but as pointed out his first responsibility is to the horse and owners.
Report stevo1 February 22, 2012 11:33 AM GMT
Sint fair point but it happens far too often with this stable, someone making money out of inside info before any news filters out officially,re Spirit Son it was the owner he first stated re problem not trainer.
Also Mono Man reported lame after 1st run at Newbury, was never relayed only heard heard about it thru forum via Mark Howard update website. Dont start on Binocular, anyway Mono Man if taking up engagement looks if any to to heading to Neptune re moves on here recently.
Olofi 25s for County you going in again, was at Newbury Friday he got badly impeded going round 1st bend then just stayed on at one pace in slow run race, hasnt gone up in weights Raya Star went up 4 lbs for its run,so must be on radar at an e/w price.
Report festivalfanatic February 22, 2012 12:30 PM GMT
Fair point about Olofi stevo. He deffo did not get the run of the race - carved up a bit turning in too iirc - though I don't think Brennan gave him a particulalry good ride. Better pace in the County and stiff finish will suit.
Report sintonian February 22, 2012 12:35 PM GMT
I said on the Betfair Hurdle thread after the race I did not think it was the greatest ride Steveo so yes I agree. Interestingly, Brennan tweeted later that day that they run at a faster pace in the national. Think this is psycological and he is making a bit of an excuse for himself tbh, even though the race was run at a slow pace.

I will back him again in the County but not ante-post.
Report strontium February 22, 2012 12:35 PM GMT
He's turned in to a serial unlucky loser. He hasn't won a race since he was a 3yo.
Report sintonian February 22, 2012 12:38 PM GMT
True Stront. But at least his prices are big enough to compensate for that.
Report BJG February 22, 2012 2:22 PM GMT
Champion Hurdle contender Grandouet could still make the Cheltenham Festival after undergoing a successful operation on Tuesday night.

The five-year-old, trained by Nicky Henderson, was to have had a prep run for next month's Stan James-sponsored race at Cheltenham in the Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton on Saturday.

However, he was withdrawn from the race at the 24-hour final declaration stage after having banged his leg in his box on Thursday night.

Henderson said: "He had a bit of surgery last night to flush an infected hind fetlock joint. It's a peculiar one, it's not everyday stuff, there's no wound or anything.

"We had to flush out a bit of infection inside the joint, rather than outside it, and that all went well. As a consequence he was much more comfortable this morning. He's walking sound on it.

"We can't do anything more today. At this stage he hasn't missed anything significant because on Friday when he was first lame he had a day off and then Saturday and he did actually have a couple of days swimming.

"Unfortunately it reacted yesterday. We'll just have to monitor it and see how we get on. We have to give it every chance and we will keep everybody absolutely posted on what we are doing.

"We have relieved the pressure on it and, if that holds, he was very fit last Thursday and at the moment we are not missing anything.

"It will become a concern, obviously, and you can only have so many days off at this stage, but as long as he is working by this weekend we are still in action and we've still got a chance.

"He's not as sore as he was, and as long as the infection can be controlled, we've still got a realistic chance."

GRANDOUET, one time 5-1 second favourite for the Stan James Champion Hurdle, will miss Cheltenham due toan injury to his near hind (back left) fetlock joint.

Nicky Henderson told racingpost.com on Thursday: "There was further improvement in the joint today but he will not be ready to gallop at the weekend and therefore we'll have to put his Champion Hurdle challenge on hold until next year."

He added: "I've yet to discuss a plan with Simon Munir(owner) but Grandouet is not a horse for two and a half miles and therefore I doubt he'd go to Aintree."

LOL.

Since it appears to be only a minor injury at an unlucky time, it might be a blessing in disguise and work to the horse's advantage - a year older, stronger and more experienced. Hurricane Fly will be 9 by then.
