I agree. I'm sure he should be out soon but I have no idea
Report wellchief January 18, 2012 6:31 PM GMT
Agree Ibrahima.

I remember your Sprinter Sacre thread from last year, before he'd had a run over hurdles.  Let's hope your judgement is as good this year and can improve 2 more places Wink

To be honest, its the people from this forum who have put me on to Mono Man (and have now backed him), so if he loses I owe you all a kick in the nuts LaughLaugh
Report Ibrahima Sonko January 18, 2012 8:43 PM GMT
I keep searching him on the entries, something tells me he has been put away or nicky thinks he is a chaser.

But after his run in one of the hottest races over 2 miles away from ireland i was blown away even thou i backed its a gimme.

Then again i think it was the same race at newbury where Kings Theatre finished 2nd and he paid its way (for me anyway) Cool

Still have a feeling the way Mono Man took off after that mistake at the last makes me think he is special. oh and the 4k bets recorded on Mono man that day.
Report stevo1 January 19, 2012 1:48 AM GMT
On him as well had entries xmas period none taken, Henderson likes holding them back but like Spirit Son where nothing mentioned for months may have had problems? Notice to Sint? lol!
His trainer will be moaning like **** if we get some bad weather again and cant get run in etc etc, like 2 seasons ago.

No RC, I was being facetious and I have the utmost respect for Barry Geraghty. However, I do remember last year going to the Sandown Festival preview evening and listening to Hendo talk up Binocular in strong terms only for him to be withdrawn the next morning. Maybe I'm just getting cynical as I age.
Report Ibrahima Sonko January 21, 2012 10:25 PM GMT
that would be nice as i am going that day.
Report Masterminded January 21, 2012 10:30 PM GMT
Is he really a stayer? Thought he traveled like a horse with plenty of speed on his hurdles bow & looked pretty damn quick in his bumpers.
Report festivalfanatic January 21, 2012 10:34 PM GMT
I don't know mate. Clutching at straws!
Report R Carver January 21, 2012 10:37 PM GMT
Hi Stront - I am getting equally cynical, no worries! The Binocular situation was shocking and I do not think the trainer has handled the SS situation very well.
Report R Carver January 21, 2012 10:50 PM GMT
FF - he could go to that race, though I wonder whether Broadback Bob or SImonsig may be more likely to be entered given they have already been tried over further?  I think Mono would stay and the trainer did run General Miller in Saturday's race on the back of just one run but i suspect 2 may be the trip at the moment.

I am guessing but other possible races would be those at Fos Las (4th) given its similarity to Newbury and Sprinter Sacre went there last yr, Newbury (11th) given he has run there, Exeter (12th, Spirit Son last yr), Sandown 17th, Ascot 18th (track form and Sprinter ran last yr), Kempton 25th.

One horse I am interested in, who ties in with Mono Man is OSCAR DARA, formerly with Alan Flemming and now with Nicky Henderson.

He is due to run at exeter next week and has an entry in the Neptune, apparantly he's been working well on the gallops.

Url below is from the owners blog who details the injury record the horse has had, and would love to see this horse run well at Cheltenham.

Yep I've pretty much given up hope. I thought he may have been entered at Newbury or Ascot but nothing. He's not going to go straight for the Supreme I wouldn't have thought. I hope he's back soon as horses like him can get lost if they miss large parts of their novice year. Of course he hasn't won over hurdles & could be saved for next year but who know's.
Report R Carver February 14, 2012 6:17 PM GMT
I agree with all that MM. A real pity. I never quite trust that horses who miss a yr (obviously he has not quite missed a yr) will come back, but lets hope so.

Mono Man entered at Doncaster next week surprisingly. I suspect it is too late to make it to the Supreme though Oscar Whisky had his Supreme prep on 19 Feb following 1 prior hurdle run (in December, which he won).

Good spot RC.

I see his price has come back in abit on the back of that for the Supreme and the Neptune.  Had a small saver on the Neptune as well last week when his price got stupidly big.

Report wellchief February 21, 2012 5:28 PM GMT
It looks like he will run in the 3:30 at Huntingdon on Thursday over 2m4f (well its the only one of his entries with Barry as a confirmed jockey).

About 95 on here for the Supreme and 25 for the Neptune (but you can still get 40's with the bookies)

Just found this blog on the RP bloodstock site (4th Feb 2012)

It is hard to select one horse from the Seven Barrows academy but the lightly raced Mono Man has the potential and ability needed to win this event.

The winner of two bumpers last season,Mono Man appeared to be outpaced when a staying-on third behind the useful pair It’s A Gimme and Colour Squadron at Newbury on his only start this term. A step up in trip at Cheltenham should benefit – his sire Old Vic has supplied four festival winners in the last nine years, all coming over a minimum distance of 2m5f.

Selection: Fingal Bay

Alternative: Mono Man (each-way)

Right, all aboard the train that pays out handsomely in march.

We all know that on one run that this horse is at least a 135 horse, given that Nicky only has his novices half fit first time out this horse is special.

Report festivalfanatic July 23, 2012 9:04 AM BST
Half fit or not IS yard was devastated that he didn't win on his hurdles debut at Newbury. He's clearly very talented but just as clearly fragile. A 6yo who's only been seen in public 3 times? Not one for me unless he goes to the Festival with at least 2 and possibly 3 successful runs under his belt.

He did catch my eye too, so did the morrison horse who should had been fined.
Report R Carver August 14, 2012 11:30 AM BST
Ibrahima, I am with you again this yr on this one, i think he is top class potentially. His bumper runs were mustard and I agree he had excuses at Newbury. I think he surely would have improved for the run, made an awful error at the last against horses who had had a run and were therefore likely to be fitter (and more experienced in Its a Gimme). I think Colour Squadron and Its a Gimme were badly campaigned thereafter.

I am not concerned massively about his few races so far. He may be fragile but I am not sure the indications are that he is overly-so. He ran in January having just turned 5 (lots of NH horses do not run in a bumper til 5), then ran a few weeks later before being put away(same owners had ERicht for the big bumpers, trainer is known for his aversion to the big festival bumpers anyway). He then returned in Newbury (a race he has targetted with his best novices over the yrs) and missed the rest of the yr. Maybe not ideal but maybe not the end of the world - Finians Rainbow made his bumper debut aged 6 (albeit missing a debut at 5) and his hurdles debut at 6 at the same November Newbury meeting.

More tricky for me is how hard it is to predict which way the trainer will send his horses at the Festival. We know how hard this had been to predict in the past. Being an Old Vic out of Quadrennial, high class with some toe, but looking like he has some stamina in all 3 races (always ridden prominent and delivered early, stayed on well each time, perhaps most obviously in his last race) I would think with another yr on his back he may want more than the minimum. Obviously a long, long way off, and speculative only, the trainer may run 10 in the Supreme but all things being equal at this stage he looks to me to have a couple who have more obvious speed.
Report R Carver August 14, 2012 11:32 AM BST
* re Finians, should read 'missing an entry'.
Report Masterminded August 15, 2012 6:03 PM BST
Mono Man is clearly a horse with a lot of potential but it has to be said I wouldn't be in a rush to backing him antepost unless you know the well being of the horse first hand. He has obviously had plenty of problems.
Report wellchief August 15, 2012 6:43 PM BST

Stevo - what on earth? Vis-a-vis Mono Man, how many other horses are ommitted form the Howard book? Many I would say. Why on earth would /should he be giving updates at this stage? Many horses would not even be back yet or only just returning. You may have complaints about other horses with this trainer, but the idea that he is misbehaving at this stage with this horse is IMO just wrong.
