Scotsirish looks a worthy fav, but I cant see that he will be much shorter than 7/4 - 2/1 on the day so I'm happy to wait for that rather than back at 3's now.

I don't know how much i buy into the arguement that weight in this race doesn't matter.I appreciate that Spotthedifference and Garde Champetre have carried big weights to win this race and other handicaps over the course but in fairness we are talking about two horses with exceptional proven records at the course and over the distance. Many other of the races have been won by lightly weighted(less than 10-13) horses so to say that the weight isn't worthy of consideration in this race is questionable

Sizing Australia was getting 17lb from Garde Champetre last year, by not running he isn't helping his handicap mark and will certainly have more than 10st 9lb to lump if he makes the race this year.
If I'm not mistaken Maljimar made his banks debut in the race last year and finished a close up 4th, he hasn't been out since and I've not heard any plans for the horse but you'd think if he had a few weeks with Enda Bolger to work on the demands of XC races he'd have a real chance - he's 10s at the moment..... |
By:
Maljimar ran in a load of XC chases in France over the summer. He does have decent form over the Cheltenham banks though (he made his debut in the December Hcap in 2009, beaten 3 l by Garde Champetre and he'e run over that course twice).

OK - cheers Stron, so is he an intended runner do you know ?

By:
Sorry, not a clue - you'd imagine so, if healthy.

Happy with that and my 7-2 I've got, will go in for more once NRNB come in.

I agree with most of the points on this thread concerning yesterday and scotsirish.i guess im baised as from previously on this thread and othersim on him to a decent amount a couple of months ago but that was just what i expected on horrid ground yesterday. Anyone who thought he was going to hack up by 30 L in his pre cheltenham prep were clearly mistaken. His taken to the banks really well and as stated above hacked round in 2 nd gear till the approaching the last and it was the course fences he got wrong. His error at the last made him have to pick up again on heavy ground which is never pleasing to the eye. His Hcap mark shouldnt be to bad after that and back on good ground im still 100 % sure his class and ability to cruise through the race will see him very hard to beat and a ew play to nothing 1/4 1,2,3,4 at the 4s downwards if thats your bag. Id also be very hopeful Willie Mullins will have this fella trained to the minute come the big day.All the best.

Only danger if travelling is stablemate imo.

Scotsirish is classiest horse ever to run in this race. He got within 6 lengths of Big Zeb. His turn of foot will surely see him home against this lot of plodders. Lump on
By:
Uncle Junior is the one I'll be on come the day. Has taken to the obstacles really well and will devour the hill. I think he'd have beaten Scotsirish the last day at Cheltenham but we'll never know now.
By:
I think the stable think Scotsirish is better than Uncle Junior, though that's not necessarily worth much.
By:
Ruby Walsh thought that if he makes it in one piece thats ScotsIrish would hack up in the cross country. I thought sunday was a perfectly respectable trial and that the race could well cut up a bit. A better jump at the last and he would have won more comfortably. I will be going in more heavily once the whole market is NRNB

My idea of the Grand National winner
By:
Would no one be worried that he won't stay? Yes they go round at a dawdle but it is still 31f. Who knows how much he will find? Maljimar cruised round but couldn't find much when going up the hill - could the same not happen to Scotsirish?
Looking at the past winners they were all decent stayers not 2/2.5 milers Sizing Australia and Garde Champetre - Although both capable over shorter, interestingly they were both sent to the 4 MILE NATIONAL HUNT CHASE as novices. A New Story, Native Jack and Spotthedifference - All regulars in long distance handicap chases, the first first two took part in multiple Irish Nationals, and the latter, Grand National. In fairness Headsontheground had form over all trips from 2 miles to 3 miles. But Scotsirish will have to show remarkable adaptability to run Big Zeb close over 2 miles, and then three months later be able to win over 3m7f at the festival. Remember, both his wins over a XC course have come over 3 miles and he has an extra 7f and a hill to face at Cheltenham. It is anyones guess if he would have won at Cheltenham in December and for that reason 5/2 seems on the skinny side for me at this point. |
By:
Does it not come down to the fact that anyone backing Scotsirish is backing a horse in a hcap without even knowing what weight it will carry? Everyone whos calling him the cert of the meeting seems to be talking about it like its a level weights race.
By:
Also can't quite believe a lot of the stuff I'm reading above, saying the comparison with Maljimar is irelevant as Scotsirish was a stone better (15lbs at respective peak) chaser than Maljimar... Yes, but Scotsirish is going to have to very likely run off AT LEAST a 19lb higher mark than Maljimar did. Maljimar ran off 134 and Scotirish ran off 153 in December and can't see why the handicapper would drop him from that mark.

SCOTSIRISH DOES NOT STAY AND WILL BE BEATEN IN THIS RACE. HE'S THE BEST HORSE IN THE RACE AHEAD OF SIZING AUSTRALIA. HOWEVER, SCOTSIRISH WILL NOT STAY! MARK MY WORDS! |

Two casualities - sad to hear. Mullins appears to get more than his share of fatalities at the big meetings. Hopefully these were the only two for the day.

Such sad news. Are we to expect some RSPCA backlash due to the good to firm going?
